Joys and Concerns
I’m excited that we have a guest columnist
today – my daughter Avery. May her words be a
blessing to you!!
Recently the idea of my future has almost
consumed me. I've always been the kind of
person to look ahead in life and dream about
what was next. I dreamed of getting into high school, turning 16,
going to prom, turning 18, graduating, and getting into college,
you know the “big things,” but now that all of those things don't
seem so big, yes they were important milestones in life, but now
I'm staring the biggest of things right in the face, adulthood.
Per usual all I want is to know what’s next so I can properly
prepare, I need God to hand me a planner with the important
dates in bright red ink. I need “you meet him today” and the “she’ll
be in your wedding” and don’t forget “this is the opportunity you
want to jump at,” you know the big things. After talking to God,
the fact of the matter is I cannot see the future and God isn't going
to make me psychic, sadly.
Because of these thoughts, my talks with God have followed a
similar theme of being still. You see I used to hate this phrase, it
haunts my life. Whenever I really need to listen to God, he always
throws this phrase at me. I hate being still, I have to be listening
to music, messing with a pen, moving around, or doing something.
The idea that I have to sit still in the stillness scares me simply
because it means I have to listen to what he says, and that maybe I
won't figure it all out.
God sat me down the other day and asked me to look around,
and sitting on the floor of my dorm room I saw it, across from me
was my amazing roommate, I had gotten into the dorm I really
wanted, I am apart of an unbelievable campus ministry, I had come
by the most incredible friends, and most importantly all of it was
good. It took me sitting in stillness to really see the good things
that God has placed in my life, and that each of these things I
hadn’t planned for, they had come in his timing.
You see if we refuse to sit still and know who our God is, then
we miss it. I’ve been so excited about what's next that the
anticipation is what's killing me. The “who’s it gonna be” and the
“when’s it gonna happen” questions will not escape my head or my
heart, and yet throughout this time God has been faithful. We
forget to look at all the things he has given us in his time, and it's
in these moments that we realize how good it is. The Bible says
“be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him,” and to “be still
and know that I am God.” God can ask us to do anything and yet
all he asks is that we would just be still. We cannot predict the
future, but God has very plainly told us that impatience is not
good and that his timing is. So please let this phrase haunt your
life like it does mine, and take the time to just be still.

We want to thank the whole church family at FUMC for all of the love, support and prayers you have given our family during the journey to correct Judah's spine. I wanted to say thank you for all the prayers and support you have given to CIS. The cookout you hosted was wonderful. Ice cream with toppings before school started was also incredible! I personally appreciate all you do for us.

Canyon FUMC, As I was looking through the budget today, I again saw how you guys gave us $9,000 this year as the conference was not able to give as much this year! WOW! I just wanted to thank you again, to let you know how much I appreciate all that you do for WTAMU Wesley Foundation and this town!

During Celebration Sunday in August, my name was drawn to receive a church t-shirt. The design on the front is unique as it depicts the architect’s drawing of our new church in the early 1970’s.
Thank you, church, for this shirt which I’ll wear proudly.
Love in Christ,
Marilyn Dees

Team Meetings & Announcements
First United Methodist Church Canyon exists “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” To fulfill that mission, members should “glorify God in worship, grow in likeness of Jesus and give our lives in love of
Jesus.” Sounds good on paper, but how is that done? Joining a grow group is one way to grow closer to Christ and fellow believers. Sunday mornings offer 14 Grow Groups ranging in ages from the 20’s to the 90’s. All are Bible-based, but some emphasize stages in life such as the “Life & Marriage” class for those married one to 10 years, or the “Living in Faith Together” (L.I.F.T.) class for parents rearing children. “Hopeful Explorers” is for adults (18+) with special needs. The classes meet at 9:40 a.m. and are year-round. Most semester Grow Groups kicked off the week of Aug.29. They will run six to 12 weeks and are open to new people at any time. Four women’s groups offer a flexibility in time and days. Brenda Havens is leading a seven-week study on the book The Shepherd with Me on Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m. in Room 222. Karen Middleton is leading a Wednesday night group from 6:15-7:30 p.m on the character and nature of God. At the same time, Jonna Gumfory is leading ladies in a five-session study of Max Lucado’s book Anxious for Nothing based on Philippians 4:4-8. Francie Pittman resumed her brown bag lunch Bible study on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to noon in room 113. The group is covering “Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living.” Men’s League, led by Bryan Smith and Kyle Dudley, meets on Wednesdays from 6:15-7:30 p.m. in the church Parlor. Its formal description is: a brotherhood of warriors bound by prayer, accountability and action, defending God’s will as spiritual leaders in our family, church, and community.” Three co-ed groups also meet on Wednesday nights after the fellowship meal. Pastor Rick Enns is leading a new study of the book A Firm Foundation that “engages the deep heart questions of United Methodists and casts a compelling vision by trustworthy voices for dynamic faith.” The class meets in room 221. Rick and Laura Reyher lead the Alpha to Omega class in the church library. “We are taking a video tour of Israel with Ray Vander Laan as our guide to help us see and understand Jewish culture where it happened,” Laura Reyher said. “We are enjoying the video for 20-30 minutes and then have an opportunity to express our thoughts from what we have learned.” The third co-ed class is learning about the history of the Chrismon symbols and creating Chrismon decorations for the modern worship service tree and to refresh ones on the traditional worship service tree. They meet in room 125/126 through Oct. 24, excluding Oct. 3. Leaders are Jodi Hartman, Sherry Neese, and Christi Ybarra. Four United Methodist Women missionary circle groups meet monthly. Anyone interested in joining a circle can contact Becky Harp
at [email protected]. Pat Tyrer also leads a UMW reading program in the library at 9:30 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month. The national UMW Reading Program selects the books. Two Grow Groups focus mainly on prayer. A group of ladies of all ages and churches meets at Kathi Lee’s home off-site at 18 Fairway Drive on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 a.m. John Barnhart leads the Myron Dee’s Men’s Prayer Group in rooms 121/123 on Saturdays at 7 a.m. John Barnhart organizes GPS – Guidance through Prayer and Scripture. Barnhart sends e-mails with devotions to those in the group. Their focus is “to ask for God’s guidance and direction for ourselves, our church, our minister and staff, In His Hands Pre-School, the Wesley Foundation and Ceta Canyon Church Camp.” Anyone interested in being added to the list should contact him at [email protected] or call him at 806-679-2316. Visitors and members who would like to know more about FUMC can attend “In the Know,” a four-week class. It meets Sunday mornings at 9:40 in the library. Staff and FUMC members lead the rotation format class which can begin on any Sunday. In addition to Grow Groups, the church also offers New Room Fellowship, “a grassroots ministry focused on providing a worship experience that appeals to those who have recently graduate college, singe, or young married.” It meets on Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Children also have small groups on Wednesday nights. Children ages three through fourth grade are in small groups learning how to worship and learning scripture (its meaning and how it applies to their lives). Groups are focusing on serving these next nine months. Each week they will have a focal scripture or Bible story and a service project to go with it. Leaders will stress with the children that serving is not about them; they do it for others. Sunday small groups start at 9:40 a.m. The pre-kindergarten class focuses on Bible stories and activities to help remember them and why they are important. Kindergarten/first graders are learning what it means to be a Christian. Second-fourth graders and Club 56 (fifth and sixth graders) are learning facts that lead them to know the Bible is true. Kim Hopson is the children’s minister. The youth group has two grow group opportunities. On Sunday mornings students meet in the basement at 9:40 to go through a study called “Habitudes” which is talking about different habits each week to help them grow spiritually. On Sunday evenings the youth split into four groups: junior high girls, junior high boys, high school girls and high school boys all meeting from 6-7:30—a light meal is provided. The junior high groups are studying the book of Ephesians, and the high school groups are studying spiritual disciplines.
