By Rick Kelso, General Manager

The Winter Season is starting to wind down and our summer travelers are starting to head to their summer destinations. We hope everyone had a

great time these past several months and we hope that your summer is full with lots

of great golf and great weather.

This is also the time of year when Tim and the maintenance crew really get busy, from transitioning from the winter grasses to the summer Bermuda grasses, start fighting the endless battles with the mole crickets, and nematodes, and aerifying the course. Let's us not forget this is also the time when the staff is endlessly trying to keep up with mowing all of the grasses. The staff could use all the help we can provide by making sure we keep the carts on the cart paths on the par 3 holes and around all greens and tees. Make sure we all make sure we pay attention to those areas that are marked off by ropes. Also, we must make sure that we repair our ball marks on the greens and it would be greatly appreciated if we would repair one other ball mark on the green. Fill all divots we take in the fairway or tee box with the sand located on the back of the carts or the sandbox located on the par 3's. These are just a few items that will help Tim and the Maintenance staff in keeping our Golf Course in the best shape possible. Tim and I are finalizing Major maintenance date such as aerifying and Curfew application right now and we will make sure to post those dates in the May and June newsletter.

Please remember that aerifying and Curfew are just a few of the major things Tim and the Crew has going this summer. They will also be doing so many other things to help keep Southern Woods and Sugarmill Woods in great shape and that's where you can help please make sure you check in with the pro shop before heading out to play on Mondays and late evenings. If you can't get the pro shop, please abide by all the signs posted by Tim and Crew on the 1st and 10th tee before heading out to play. Your cooperation on this matter is greatly appreciated.

It is also that time of year where everyone start to look at how they are going to spend the pro shop chits before they expire on June 30th. We are scheduled to receive a couple shipments of the Ladies Clothing and a shipment of Men's Clothing before the middle of May. Also, note, we can special order anything that you would like. Just ask one of the staff in our golf shop and they would love to order those items for you, so you will be able to use up your chits before they expire.

Robin, Chef Remco and the entire food and beverage staff has done a tremendous job again this year making

the Food and Beverage operation AWESOME place to be for members and guest. We are not planning on slowing down any time soon. With the quality of the meals being as delicious as they are and service that the staff has been providing, the restaurant is busier than ever. So, with special functions as Easter, Mother's Day and any other function that is on the calendar it is our recommendation that you call and make reservation well in advance so we may reserve a spot for you. Even if it is just regular dinner night we recommend to make reservations. Thank you for your continual support of the food and beverage operation.

Many of you are very familiar with all the birdhouses placed at the 150 yard mark on our golf courses. All of these birdhouses were built and installed by the late John Romeo long before I got here in 1991. When John passed recently, many wondered what's to become of the birdhouses??

Rest easy, quietly Mr. Bill Ervasti has stepped up and has built many new houses, while also refurbishing some viable older houses and bring them up to the 2017 EPA Standards, as well as the Sugarmill and Southern codes. Next time you see Bill at the club say “Thanks John” He'll know where you're coming from. Thank you Mr. Ervasti.

As most already know, but for those who do not, I have recently changed the specifications on the Private Golf Car

By Tim Gatz, Director of Golf Maintenance

There are a number of maintenance items that will be taking place

over the next few weeks at both Southern Woods

and Sugarmill Woods.

The first thing that will be addressed is "kick starting" our Bermuda grass with a fertilizer application. Over the winter months our Bermuda grass basically goes in a semi dormant state depending on the temperature that occur. This winter was mild but still got occasional temperatures that dipped below what Bermuda grass likes. Bermuda grass does not start to actively grow until our nighttime temperatures consistently stay around 60 to 65 degrees. This typically starts in the month of April. This fertilizer application will cover tees, fairways and rough.

We are also scheduled to slice fairways in order to relieve compaction and promote Bermuda grass growth. This practice has minimal disruption and should not interfere with playability.

On greens, we have another round of solid tine aerification, light vetticutting and a light dusting with topdress sand. All of these cultural practices work together to create a better growing environment which will help our greens transition back to our base Bermuda grass.

April and May are usually some of our drier months of the year and bring little rainfall. When we receive minimal rain and temperatures start rise, the irrigation coverage in some areas at Sugarmill Woods is not very good. These areas tend to develop "hot spots" which are sections of the course that need additional irrigation. When possible, afternoon syringe cycle will be done to help these areas.

Please remember to do all of the things to keep our courses in good condition. This includes filling divots, repairing ball marks on greens, raking bunkers and keeping carts in their appropriate spots. Thank you.

Tim’s RevengeTim and his crew set up the Southern Woods GC in a slightly sadistic manner for this year's Tim's Revenge Tourney. (Ex... one tee was set in a bunker, pin placements in treacherous spots). The weather was perfect for this event (cloudy with drizzle). Fun was had by all!

We had 48 participants. 1st Flight Winners: Champs were Bill Butterworth; Larry Kent; Frank Sova & Bill Fearney. Tied for Runner-up was the Team of Art Anderson; Allen Bennett; Victor Marshall & Hank Povinelli and the Team of Doug Martin and His 3 (ringers) guest. 2nd Flight Winners: Champs were (the Notorious “Bad Girls”) Mary Bigelow; Donna Wilson; Donna Hunt & Carol Tenbrook; Runner-up Team were Todd Wilson; David Hunt; Ken Leo & Rod Fortune.

Thank you to Tim and his staff and all the participants for making this event a success!!

Ola, Members! I'm writing this while languishing on a Mexican Beach soaking

up both margaritas and the sunshine. Hopefully the internet is working or you will

be seeing a blank space. I am missing you all dearly and am drinking to your health as many times as I can manage, but I will be back before you get a chance to learn to live without me (and no, Mrs. C, I will not be “expecting”!). “Hasta pronto mi amigos!”

Break out those poodle skirts and slick back that hair as, back by popular demand, is Oldies Night with live music by Fred Campbell on Friday, the 7th. Cocktails start at 5:30 with dinner served at 6 pm at a cost of $18.95 ++.

Game Night this month will be on Tuesday, the 11th. Our Cocktail Cuties meet every Tuesday afternoon in the lounge from 3:30, come along, meet new friends and try an exotic cocktail! The usual weekly specials, along with the regular

menu, will continue - Thursday is Prime Rib night for $18.95 and Friday's Fish Fry is $13.95. A special lunch menu is served on Sundays from 11 am to 2:30 pm.

Reservations are heavy for Chef's wonderful Easter Brunch Buffet on Sunday, April 16th so if you still need a table call me immediately. This bountiful bunny brunch will be served from 11 am to 3 pm for $25.95 ++. Did you know that Easter was named after the pagan Anglo-Saxon goddess, Eastre, whose symbols were the egg and the hare? Hence the chocolate bunnies and the egg hunts.

Due to the annual Superintendant's Classic Golf Tournament the club will be closed on Saturday, April 22nd. Our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

UPCOMING EVENTS: Game Night in May will be on Tuesday the 9th. Sunday, May 14th is our Mother's Day Buffet. Back again by popular demand the talented Cliff Ritchie will entertain us on Wednesday, May 17th.

Call me anytime if you have any issues on 382-3838, ext. 11, Robin – and I'll be seeing you in the dining room.

Dear Members and Food Lovers,

My love for food is not only about eating. I enjoy cooking a lot. I love to innovate but mostly I try to learn all the secrets and tricks from everyone I

worked with for the last 28 years.

I have a theory about food, a theory that all my family shares. The most important ingredient for any food is “love & passion”. If a Chef doesn't have that you will taste that and see that on your plate. Good food is always tempting, always!

Food is always compassionate, no matter what mood I'm in, no matter how upset, happy, depressed or enthusiastic I am. I can always count on good food to cheer me up.

I know most people consider food as secondary to happiness, not me! I think being happy is getting your favorite food in the company of your favorite people. Nothing can beat that, Nothing! Enjoy food with your family & friends.

All the best and hope to see you soon,

Chef Remco

Tennis

April is here, and the USTA Leagues are winding down, both the Ladies and Men's

teams are finishing. The Men's 4.0 Super senior team will advance to the next round and play the regionals. They will be playing at the NEW USTA National Campus over in Lake Nona. This new facility has over 50 tennis courts.

There is a Men's team playing in the USTA Men's over 40, 4.0 team. This league starts in late March. Each match consists of three doubles and two singles matches. Matches will vary with some on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sunday morning. Check at the Proshop for the HOME match schedule.

April Playday

The next Tennis Association Playday is slated for Saturday, April 29th at 8:30 a.m.

Along with the Mixed Doubles Tennis the Lunch will be Subs (heros) from Subway. This is the last Playday before the long summer break.

Oak Village

Tennis Traditions Day

Mark your Tennis calendars for Saturday, May 20th. Dust off that OLD wood racquet, and get your tennis WHITES out. The tennis format is somewhat like a Playday, with Mixed Doubles being the Format. Don't fret if you can't find your old wood racquet. I have PLENTY of them for use in the event. There will be some refreshments during and after play.

Fitness News

As many of you have noticed, there are now signs up in the Fitness Center related to Cell phone use inside the gym. Please, as a courtesy to everyone around you take your phone call outside. It's gotten a little out of hand with members talking on their phones while on the equipment. Thank You.

Pickleball

Pickleball will continue into April on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 4 pm. Many “picklers” were snowbirds and have gone North until the Fall. Don't let that discourage you. Come on out at the regular times, there still is enough players to have a good game.

Men's Monday-Wednesday Tennis

On Monday and Wednesday mornings, as the rising sun peeks through the palmettos, the guys show up on the tennis courts at Oak Village and sign in for ladder play. Set up many years ago by Harvey Oltendorf and Jack Nuss, the men's Monday-Wednesday doubles program has become an important part of tennis here at Sugarmill Woods. As they arrive, players form foursomes and play a social warm-up round. Players must sign in by 8:20 am in order to be included in ladder play which begins at 8:30 am. The designated coordinator sets up the foursomes based upon rank-order and then calls for ladder play to begin. Within each foursome, players pair up and play eight games with each of the other players for a total of 24 games. After play, participants post their scores and move up and down the ladder based upon their wins and losses over a five week period. The Men's Tennis Advisory Committee (MTAC) is composed of men who have volunteered to serve as coordinators and who, along with the record-keeper, meet as necessary to maintain the rules of the program. David Watson has taken on the job of maintaining the computerized ladder records and is doing a great job. The Men's Monday-Wednesday tennis program is open to all men with Sugarmill Woods Country Club tennis privileges. No reservations required - just show up and play. Players of all levels are welcome to participate in the good fellowship and friendly competition. If any questions, call me at 382-8909 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Women's Tennis

Ladies take to the courts for some lively tennis on Tuesdays at 8:15 am. Players of all levels are welcome! No reservations required - just show up and play. We have had a great start to our ladies program. Our goal is to fill all 4 courts every Tuesday. So come out for some spirited play! Also, come join the ladies at 8:30 on Thursday for informal play. We have a group of 3-5 that come out. We would love to have more. Contact Antoinette Van den Hoogen at 382-3138 if any questions.

Mixed Doubles

Mixed doubles fun takes place on Friday mornings at 8:30 am. If interested, contact Rick Scholl at 382-0353.

Playday

Don't forget to mark your calendars for our next Playday to be held on Saturday, April 29th at the Sugarmill Woods tennis courts. Tennis will be followed by an al fresco lunch (Subs) at courtside. To join the festivities, sign in at the pro shop or by contacting Tennis Director Rick Scholl, 382-0353 or Tournament Chairman Jeff Berg at 503-2717. Come on out and enjoy the fun!

Keep on swinging – see you on the courts!

Sugarmill Woods Men’s Golf Association

By Bob Strausser

Sugarmill Woods has enjoyed some great weather this winter. However, as I write this newsletter I see we will have a few days with highs in the low 60's and nights in the low to mid 30's,

but that is better than having inches to feet of snow as in the northeast. We can

tolerate these few days.

MGA Spring Tournament

The MGA Spring Tournament will be held on Thursdays, April 6th and 13th. The format is a combined individual point quota for the two weeks - flighted. There will be a luncheon following golf on Thursday, April 13th compliments of your MGA. E-mails have been sent to all members and flyers have been posted in the Pro Shop and men's locker room. There is a separate sign-up sheet in the men's locker room for the luncheon. Dick Tuxbury is the Chairman for this event.

MGA Telephone Directory & Operations Manual

The MGA Operations Manual has been distributed the past several weeks at MGA sign-ins - Wednesdays at Southern Woods and Thursdays at Sugarmill Woods. If you have not received a copy contact Phil Runfola, 382-3933. A big thank you to Phil for coordinating the publication of the manual and a special thanks to Bill Williamson our fund raising chairman for all of the advertisements.

Take a minute to go through the Manual and note the advertisers. If you ever have the opportunity to use one of them, please make a special note and tell them you saw their advertisement in the MGA'S Telephone Directory and Operations Manual.

Hole - In - One

Just a reminder SMW MGA has a 'Hole-In-One' prize for 2017. We are three months into the year and have had two hole in one's on MGA events. Much better than last year when there was none the whole year.

Reminder - Important Note

The MGA regular tournament games are played every Thursday, 8:30 am shotgun start (except December thru February 9:00 am start). Sign-up for golf is done on line through Sign Up Genius. Sign ups are downloaded very early Wednesday morning. Teams and score cards are then produced. Any changes, additions or cancellations after the download must be coordinated with Dick Tuxbury, 382-4031 (not the Pro Shop). Cancellations on Thursday morning should be telephoned to the Pro Shop (382-3838, ext. 14). Walk-ins on Thursday morning will be accommodated if there are openings. Remember, if you sign up to play and do not show up or call to cancel after the score cards and pairings are set up, you will be charged the

Sugarmill Woods Ladies’ Golf Association

Musings

By Martha Renfroe

There's little to report for this issue of our Newsletter since three weeks in March are being taken up with the President's Cup and the results won't be in until after this newsletter goes to print. Suffice it to say there's a good turnout and you'll see the results in next month's article. We do have chip-in and closest to the pin information for the first two weeks of the President's Cup, though.

March 1 closest to the pin honors went to Nancy Eble, Cypress #6, Judy Mantle, Oak #3 and Bea Raymond, Oak #6, each winning $7.25. Chip-ins for March 1 were Janice Doyle (2!), Karen Taylor, Noni Postler (2!) and Linda Mickle, getting $1.50 per chip-in.

March 8 closest to the pin honors went to Joanne Tuxbury, Cypress #6, Ro O'Shea, Pine #7, and Chris Venable, Pine #4. These ladies walked away with $9.50 each! Chip-ins were Jo Ann Ray and Rhonda Hanson, each pocketing $4.

Due to rain on February 22, there's only one week to report! February 15 the game was Member/Member Points Quota and there were 24 players. First Flight winners were: 1st, Bonnie Demianczyk & Martha Renfroe (+5) $5 each; 2nd, Chris Venable & JoAnn Ray (-1) $4 each and 3rd, Linda Joseph & Nancy Eble (-4) $3 each. Second Flight winners were: 1st, Phyllis Pellegrom & Twila Vaughn (+6) $5 each; 2nd (tie) Linda Mickle & Joelle England and Karen Hall & Ann Gunderman (-1) $3.50 each. Closest to the Pin honors went to Linda Mickle on Cypress #6, Judy Mantle on Pine #4, and Bonnie D on Pine #7. The chip-in pot was loaded due to a carryover from the previous week and Joelle England walked away with all the quarters with the only chip-in of the day.

The Ryder Cup was a joint Sugarmill Woods/Southern Woods event held at Southern. It was a great event enjoyed by all who participated. Look for more on that in the Southern Woods LGA article.

Upcoming events: April 5 – Odd or Even – Individual Flighted; April 12 Four Corners ABCD; April 19 Member/Member Better Ball and April 26 Star of the Year, Individual Flighted.

By Sherrie Ross

Well we can all be thankful for the beautiful weather we continue to enjoy!! This is definitely my kind of winter. (At least it was until today and tomorrow .....brrrrr) Hey, at least we aren't up north with all that white stuff!

This month started off with an afternoon event and it was a one-day Ryder cup. There were 48 ladies participating and we had two teams - the red and black team was headed up by Lorraine Dayton and the blue and beige team was captioned by Margot Check. Joy Figueredo was the overall director and it was a great success. It was a hard fought battle (I know my match with my partner Susan Ervasti against Mary Beth Stassi and Phyllis Pellegrom went down to the wire and we were not the only ones). Our nine hole ladies participated in the Ryder Cup format as well and the Blue and Beige team ended up the winner with 12 points and the Red and Black team had 9. We all gathered afterwards for hors d'oeuvres and your beverage of choice! It was a great time and Joy, Margot and Lorraine deserve congratulations for putting together such a fun event.

The week of 2/23/17 had us playing match play vs. par and we had 23 ladies playing. The first flight had 8 ladies and Marilyn Gorney won with a +7 and earned $9.00 in doing so and Joy Figueredo won second with a +4 and was awarded $7.00. Our second flight had 9 ladies and Jodi Edlin and Gail Wilson tied with a +4 score and each received $7.00. Sherrie Ross won second with a +2 score and was awarded $4.00. The third flight had 6 ladies and it was a 3 way tie with a +2 score between Noni Postler, Mary Beth Stassi and Carolyn Ohlmeyer to win $4.00 each.

Closest to the Pin winners were awarded $5.00 each and they were #4 - Joy Fig, #8 - Sylvia Taus, #13 - Jodi Edlin and #17 - JoAnn Ray.

Our 9 hole ladies had 7 participants. Donna Wilson won first place with a +4 for $9.00 and Kathy Ley won second place for $5.00.

The week of March 2nd was Founder's Day. It was a great day although an emotional one as we all remembered and honored our founder Rose Marie Coe. Rose's husband, Evan, was a guest of the LGA for the luncheon and had a few words to share with us all

about Rose. Terry Blose who was a charter member did the honors of cutting the cake for us. We also announced the selection of the Board candidates for next year and held a vote for their confirmations. The new officers will be sworn in at Closing Day. There were 40 ladies participating in a team event and the winning team ran away with it scoring 21 under par. That team consisted of Sylvia Taus, Jodi Edlin, Gail Wilson and Lois Becker. Two teams tied

for second with a 15 under par and they were Angie Loethen, Judy Mantle, Cathy Wright and Veronica Didier and the second team had Karen Taylor, Joyce Lynk, Sally Neeb and Janice Doyle. Congratulations to all!

Closest to the pins were #4 - Karen Taylor, #8 - Martha Renfroe, #13 - Karen Taylor (she was really good today) and #17 - Chris Venable and each hole was worth $6.00.

Our 9 hole ladies played low gross, low net and Elaine won low gross. Carol Tenbrook won low net and Dee Puma won second low net. Dee Puma was closest to the pin on #4 and Elaine Gallo was closest on #8 and each received $6.00

The week of 3/9/17 was "Beat the Pro" and we had 15 participants. Rick and Joy Figueredo played at least one hole with all of the ladies and it was great fun (well - maybe not so much for Rick) Our net scores had to beat Rick's gross score and 12 ladies made $2.50 each doing just that! The winners were Joy Fig, Sylvia Taus, Angie Loethen, Gail Wilson (who shot lights out) Lois Becker, Inge Weeks, Chris Venable, Sherrie Ross, Judy Mantle, Rhonda Hanson, Joyce Drye and Martha Renfroe. Many thanks to Rick for being such a great sport - we all enjoyed his company.

The Practice Tee

By Ed Burfeindt, PGA Professional

This month we will be discussing a topic that I know all golfers try to avoid talking about, and that is the dreaded

Shank!! Even the sound of the word will send shivers down the spine of all who have

played this game of golf. The “Hosel Rocket” can cause a player to want to give up the game completely, if they can't shake this problem. We will review the definition of the Shank, and go through a few drills to help get you back on track.

First things first, what exactly is a Shank?? A Shank is defined as a shot that comes off the hosel of your club, as opposed to the clubface where it should be hit. The hosel is the part of the club where the shaft and the clubhead are connected.

You will know when you hit this awful shot because the ball with shoot directly right for right-handers and left for left-handers.

There are two simple drills that you can try to get yourself back on track and eliminate this conundrum. The first drill is to take practice swings without a golf ball with just your right hand (left hand for lefties). By using just the one hand, it allows you to easily feel the proper release of the club. This drill will help because most of the time a shank is caused by not “Releasing” the club thru impact. A poor release results in the hosel getting to the ball first and not allowing the clubface to square up at impact for solid contact. Once you feel comfortable about the release again, try hitting some balls with both hands emphasizing that proper clubface rotation. The next drill is basically a continuation of the first we just discussed. In drill 2, you will try to hit a hook. By doing this, you will be reinforcing that release idea but also swinging the club on an inside-out swing path. The reason this will help is because the other cause of a shanked shot is a swing path that is made outside-in. To help you with this hitting a hook idea, there are two adjustments you should make. The first is to close your stance at set up. This means you will move your front foot more forward then your back foot (see picture below).

The second adjustment to try is to stand a little further away from the ball. This will produce a more

rounded, rotational swing. After making these adjustments, make a few swings reinforcing that strong release idea. The shots that are hit may not look pretty, but they will be moving you away from the main causes of the Shank. After hitting a few of these hooks, slowly work your way back to a normal set up and shot. If you work on these two drills, you should be able to avoid the “Laterals”.

If you need help with the shanks or any part of your game, send me an email to [email protected] or call (352) 382-3838, ext. 10 to set up a lesson. I look forward to seeing you next month on The Practice Tee.

Join the Alliance. Come to our meetings, hear the experts, speak to groups, help at festivals, help with fundraisers, help with mailings, attend commission and agency meetings and speak out to protect the Homosassa! We meet at 7 p.m. on

ndthe 2 Thursday of the month at the Homosassa Civic Club.

The Save the Homosassa River Alliance has been organized to inform citizens about all significant environmental issues affecting the Homosassa River System. The goal is to help restore, protect and perpetuate the native integrity of the related springs and rivers.

The Homosassa River is a 7-mile long fresh water river that leads through an incredibly productive estuary to the Gulf of Mexico. Here the fresh water from the springs mixes with salt water from the Gulf providing a nursery for many fish and other animals. If the water is polluted or too salty, then the young and fragile fish, shrimp and crabs will not live. High quality fresh water from the springs flowing into the river is essential.

Any factor causing environmental degradation and any means to aid in restoration is appropriate for the attention of the Alliance. We are a 501c3, non-profit organization and our game plan is to provide education and information at schools, at State Parks, at festivals, thru presentations, thru brochures, thru newsletters and thru the media. We provide a forum for citizens and experts to discuss environmental issues. We work with County Commissioners and planners, with SWFWMD and with the Florida DEP to help develop and apply the best management practices.

Welcome to the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association! Want to meet others with an interest in the great game of tennis and to make friends with some wonderful people? Join the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association!

Towards this goal, the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association (SMWTA) issues a tennis roster that includes a listing of current officers and players as well as a schedule of yearly events. By joining the Tennis Association, you are placed on the membership roster and will also receive e-mail correspondence to keep you up-to-date on other members and tennis events.

The Association also organizes several "Playdays" a year for its members, round-robin mixed doubles events, which serve to bring players together. Lunch follows, sometimes as a delightful covered-dish affair beneath the trees at Oak Village. Guests of members are welcome to play and join in the festivities. Non-playing family members are welcome to cheer on the players and join us for lunch. A portion of your dues goes towards providing Playday prizes, courtside refreshments, photos, etc.

The SMWTA also helps its members in time of need. When a member or a non-playing spouse is down and out, our Sunshine Committee is there with a card or goodies to help cheer them up.

Another primary function of the SMWTA is to provide representation to Sugarmill Woods Country Club management in matters of concern to tennis players. By joining the Association, you add your voice to those with similar tennis-related concerns.

The Tennis Association has also donated items to improve the tennis facilities. In the past, we have provided such items as the bleacher seats and shoe washers at the Sugarmill Woods tennis courts. In December of each year, a gala tennis banquet is held at the Sugarmill Woods Country Club. A portion of your dues goes towards appetizers, music, awards, photos and mementos.

By joining the Tennis Association you get all of the above benefits, plus an organization of volunteers that helps make your tennis community a better place. You also get involved with a wonderful group of people who enjoy the great game of tennis. Priceless!

To join up, place your $15.00 dues, which covers everyone in your immediate household, in the Oak Village drop box located in the shelter between Courts 2 and 3. Include your name(s), address, phone number and e-mail address. You can also give or send your dues to Treasurer Joe Lareau, 17 Nemesia Ct. E., Homosassa, FL 34446.
