History of AMA

• AMA was founded on May 7, 1847 by Nathan Smith Davis.

• The meeting to create the AMA was held in the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

• The first president elected for the AMA was Dr. Nathaniel Chapman.

• AMA has a variety of members including delegates, trustees, council members, section members, medical societies and medical students and staff.

• Specific members of the AMA include the Medical Student Section, Women Physicians Section and the Litigation Center of the AMA and the State Medical Societies.

Major Issues

• One issue that the AMA focuses on is the health care system.

• Hundreds of Physicians met in Washington D.C., to discuss key issues in health care; where they confronted Congress with their concerns. This was known as the AMA’s National Advocacy Conference.

• The main issue physicians needed to discuss was Congress’ decision about making percent cuts to Medicare physician payments and financing for graduate medical education.
