AIR AND WATER IN THE
ENVIRONMENTBy: Mrs. Ross’s Grade 1/2 Class
Assisted by Mrs. Rossmo-Wiegers Silverspring School 2012
What can we do to keep the air and water in our environment safe and
clean?
Inquiry Question:
How does water become contaminated?
Oil spills-from ships-from pipe bursts Vehicle pollution (car, truck, etc.) Factories Human pollution
Harmful effects of polluted water
Harms or kills animalsSuch as:-birds-fish-squid/octopus-dolphins-sharks-sea turtles
Can harm or kill humans-drinking contaminated water (parasites and bacterias in the water)-unable to use for washing clothes or bodies
Harms or kills plants Harmful to the air (and polluted air can harm
water)
Can we control all water contamination?
CONTROL CAN NOT CONTROL
What have you seen in our river?Saskatoon SK (South Saskatchewan)
Bicycle Shopping carts Plastic Garbage Plastic bags Tin cans Pop bottles
What can we do to keep our rivers, lakes, and streams clean ?
Stop putting garbage in the water Recycle Use a net to clean up the garbage Walk, scoot, run, or bike to school instead of
driving Take the bus Car-pool Don’t let your car idle (turn it off when you are
parked!)
How can we do to save water?
Don’t waste water! Use the dishwasher when it is full Turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth Use it only when you need it Water your lawn in the evening or in the morning
(allows for the water to absorb into the ground rather than evaporate quickly)
Turning of the tap when brushing our teeth Reserve water from leaking taps/collecting rain
water Water lawns when its cooler out; early morning or
evening (don’t forget to turn it off!)
Jack and AffaanThis person is drinking very dirty water. He might be drinking this because it may be the only water he has to drink.
This picture makes us feel disgusted, gross, and sick. It makes us feel sad because we have clean water and other people do not.
Thora and SharonWe chose this picture because it teaches us not to use
and waste so much plastic. This makes us feel upset because there are lots of animals living in the water. It makes us feel angry
because it could kill many of the animals living there. It makes us feel sad because if there are people’s favourite animals living in the water then those
animals might become sick or die.
Emma, Josie, and DylanWe chose this picture because the fire and smoke are hurting the air and water.
This picture makes us feel sad and scared because it could get out of control and burn a lot of things. It makes us worried about the possibility of oil being spilled in the water.
Julietta and AttleighWe chose this picture because it made us sad because all the little kids who live there do not have fresh water to drink. It
makes us feel sad because they might be looking for food amongst all the garbage.
Sydnee and JanelleWe chose this picture because it shows that we shouldn’t throw garbage into the water. Throwing
garbage into the water causes polluted drinking water, damages the rivers, and may kill the animals living in the water. Polluted drinking water can affect people’s health.
Isabel, Paxton, and EsitaThis picture shows what kind of garbage people are throwing into the water. We have seen bikes, plastic
cups, and bags in our river here in Saskatoon. If we keep littering our river could end up just like this one!
Renee and AveryHere is a picture of dead fish in the water. We think these fish died because of polluted
water. This water may have been polluted by gases, chemicals, garbage, or oil.
Alex and SpencerThis is a Chinese river. We think that the water was polluted by chemicals, paints, lava, or dead animals.
Adam, Eric, and KaydenWe feel sad because in some countries people have to take baths in water like this.
This picture make us feel sick!
Drew and UmaimaWe think this man is going through all this garbage looking for items to reuse such
as drinking bottles. We think he might also be trying to clean up the water.
Jakob and EverettWe learned about a giant whirlpool in the ocean which picks up all sorts of garbage. This turtle was living in the water and took a bite of the bag thinking
it was food.
What have we learned from our research?
To never through garbage in the water Don’t pollute our waters Reduce, reuse, then recycle Stop other people from putting garbage
into the water Give others information about polluted air
and water (educate others!)
