What is the Nucleus

In our biology class, the nucleus is the control center of a cell which contains hereditary information. It holds DNA and acts as a "brain" while holding everything that the cell needs to survive inside of it.

Nuclei Function’s

It is the main factor of the cell and is the main control.

It is the holding compartment of the dna for example it is like a storage compound

Location of the Nucleus

The nucleus is always located inside of the cell, but there is no rigid point in the cell in which the nucleus stays.

Also the nucleus is the main piece of the cell is the big circular object in the middle of the cell.

Importance of Nucleus The importance of the Nucleus isEvery cell

contains a nucleus, except short-lived cells such as red blood cells and primitive types, Eg bacteria. Each nucleus holds all the information needed to make every cell in the body. This enables it to pass this information on, cell to cell as the body grows; or passes on this information from one generation to the next. This information(needed to make a new individual) is called hereditary information. Whether we are talking about a plant, cow or human; this information is passed on in the same way.

Fun Facts About the Nucleus

How Large is the Cell Nucleus?-Under a light microscope the cell nucleus looks like a black dot and its

size varies depending on the species and stage of the cell's life cycle. It is usually the largest organelle in the cell and can contain up to about 2 metres of DNA which has to be tightly coiled and packed so that it can fit in. The average diameter of the nucleus in mammalian cells is 6 micrometers.

Who Discovered the Cell Nucleus?-Although the 'father of microbiology' Antonie Philips van Leeuwenhoek

(1632-1723) is believed to have observed the nucleus in fish blood cells, it was the Scottish botanist Robert Brown who is credited with its discovery. In 1831 he presented his findings in a paper to the Linnaean Society. He had observed opaque spots in plant tissue and realised they were a key component of cells. He coined the term nucleus which is still in use today.

Where is the Nucleus Located in the Cell?-Only eukaryotic cells possess a nucleus and there is usually only one per

cell. However, the cells of slime molds can contain millions of nuclei.
