The First People• The colonies first people where Indians. (the

Cherokee, Catawba and the Yamassee)• The Cherokee lived in the Appalachian mountains.• The Catawba lived in the foothills.• The Yamassee lived South of the Appalachian

mountains.• They hunted deer and turkey.• They gathered berries and used resources from

nearby forests. • They grew corn, beans and squash.

The Early Settlers

• In the 1500s Spain and France tried to settle in South Carolina, but the settlements failed. Many of the explorers fought with each other. Some of the colonist died from diseases.

• In 1629 King Charles 1st of England decided to start a new colony, for English settlers

• The king granted a strip of land to Sir Robert Heath. The land was in North Carolina and South Carolina.

• King Charles the 1st called it Carolina.

• Sir Robert Heath started Carolina.

The Lord Proprietors founded Charlestown, South Carolina in 1670.The English settlements changed life for the Native Americans.They had to share land, and sometimes fought over it.

Life in the Colony

• Carolina was split into two, North Carolina and South Carolina

• In South Carolina, people slept on mattresses made of pine branches

• Settlers covered their dirt floors in their cabins that they lived in with pine needles

• Settlers grew corn, melons, squash, beans, and rice for food and indigo for dye

• The settlers hunted deer and bear for food

• Raised pigs, cattle, chickens, and turkeys for food

• Wealthy colonists lived in nicer places that were safe

• Poor people lived in worse places in danger of pirates

• Pirates were a danger to colonists • There were little schools in the large

cities

Work and Trade

• They transported rice to other countries • Farming was very important to the colony • Rice was a main crop in the colony • Used ships to transport goods • Pirates were a threat to colonists for stealing

goods from ships and blocking ships from sailing out to sea

• Colonists also fished from nearby rivers and got fish, oysters, clams, and shrimp

• American Indians and Africans were enslaved to work for the colony

• Caught bass and trout from the ocean and rivers

• Shipbuilding was important to the colony

• They got very skilled at shipbuilding, and it became the number one industry in South Carolina

Exports

• The main exports of the colony were rice and indigo

• They shipped the items in wooden barrels

• They transported the goods by ship • Pirates blocked ships and stole goods

from the ships • The exports were farmed in the Colony

Community and Religion

• Wealth came from the low country • Plantation owners bought slaves to work

in the colony • Wealthy colonists paid for what they had • Poor colonists had to work for what they

had • Their were little schools in large cities • Traded goods they crew

• Slaves had a high demand from the colonists

• Slaves were treated very poorly • New settlers came from religious

groups • Some religious groups were the

Quakers, Baptist, and other French religious groups

• The groups came for religious freedom and for their own land where they could practice their laws

Becoming a state

• Colonists were having conflicts with Great Brittan and wanted separation from the country because of limited the Colonial trade

• Representatives from the colonies formed the Continental congress

• July 1776 members of Congress approved the Declaration of Independence, that the colonists had to fight for

• The colonists got the State of South Carolina later, in 17 88
