FEBRUARY 26, 2019 Looking to jump-start your legal technology career but don’t know how? Jared Coseglia of TRU Staff- ing Partners writes a monthly column on certifications to know and training to acquire in the industry for Legaltech News. This month’s piece takes a look at a few conferences you may not know about coming up on the 2019 calendar. Attending annual conferences and trade shows is a vital part of professional development and often a key to career mobility. Industry-specific events and edu- cational conferences are not just about seeing the latest and great- est advancements in software applications within your vertical; perhaps more importantly, trade shows are about seeing each other and sparking connections that have the potential to change the course of one’s professional trajectory. The legal industry is driven by relationships and trust, and conferences are an essential time to solidify existing bonds and be visible and available for new ones to form. Legaltech New York, now aptly rebranded Legalweek and recon- figured to expand and maintain its audience, has often been con- sidered the seminal annual event setting the tone for new and renewed business alliances in the year ahead. The new experience of Legalweek 2019 points to a diver- sification of perspectives, interests and vendor participants that will continue to evolve and change in the coming years. A number of industries—namely security and privacy—are fulfilling their inevi- table collision course with legal, and the impact will give way to more professional opportunities for those who are cross-functional in these disciplines. In order to make maximum impact and get the biggest bang for your buck as an individual or company at any of the trade shows ahead in 2019, be sure to attend the right event and have a clear desired outcome from going. Showing up and being “your best impromptu you” will not be enough. Have clear objec- tives and prepare accordingly. Here is a short list of events in 2019 that for many legal pros are “must-attend” annual rituals that will focus and/or expand the knowledge and network of a legal technology professional. Jared Coseglia is the founder and CEO of TRU Staffing Part- ners, an Inc 5000 Fastest Growing American Company 2016 & 2017 and National Law Journal’s No. 1 Legal Staffing Agency. Coseglia has over 15 years of experience repre- senting thousands of professionals in e-discovery, cybersecurity and privacy throughout the world. Attending annual conferences and trade shows is a vital part of professional development and often a key to career mobility. The legal industry is driven by relationships and trust, and conferences are an essential time to solidify existing bonds and be visible and available for new ones to form.

Legaltech New York, now aptly rebranded Legalweek and recon-

figured to expand and maintain its audience, has often been con-sidered the seminal annual event setting the tone for new and renewed business alliances in the year ahead. The new experience of Legalweek 2019 points to a diver-sification of perspectives, interests and vendor participants that will continue to evolve and change in the coming years. A number of industries—namely security and privacy—are fulfilling their inevi-table collision course with legal, and the impact will give way to more professional opportunities for those who are cross-functional in these disciplines.

the knowledge and network of a legal technology professional.

First up, RSAC: If you have never been to RSAC, brace yourself. It is a huge event. There will be no shortage of opportunities to meet tons of strangers, see plenty of demos and find time to be social with clients and prospects. RSAC is, to many in the security verti-cal, the “Legalweek” of their world, only a bit bigger. For those who come to RSAC every year, it may feel like your annual reunion with old friends, but to a legal tech pro looking for reinvention and expansion into cybersecurity—come and be overwhelmed with new people and knowledge. One benefit to its size is that RSAC has something for everyone. If you are a behind-the-scenes technical force or an attorney looking to understand security from 10,000 feet, both can find success and satiation at RSAC. The RSAC Conference happens March 4-8 in San Francisco.

April Showers, Bring Privacy Flowers: No topic was hotter in 2018 than privacy! The International Association of Privacy Profession-als hosts an annual summit where privacy professionals can get educated, certified and then connected with each other. Certifica-tion training begins April 30 with active learning on May 1, fol-lowed by two days of conferencing May 2-3. If you are looking to shift into privacy or add privacy to your portfolio of skills and knowledge, seriously consider investing in this conference. Pri-vacy professionals looking to distinguish themselves from peers by certifying in CIPP regionally, CIPM, CIPT or getting the coveted FIP (Fellow in Information Privacy) can do so at the summit. For privacy professionals with an eye on CPO/DPO types of roles, this event gives you access and exposure to professionals in those positions. The IAPP Global Privacy Summit is taking place May 2-3 with Certification Training taking place April 30-May 1.

Enter Summer, Enter CLOC: CLOC, Corporate Legal Operations Con-sortium, hosts one of the newest shows on this list, but perhaps one of the most potent. This show targets a more-specific audience than Legalweek, and the focus is corporate legal operations, plain and simple. For those in corporate legal ops roles and those look-ing to sell services and software to the aforementioned attendees, this is a must-attend event now. The cost of admission is steeper than most, which means you are serious about getting educated and mixing with corporate decision-makers by going. CLOC offers access to some powerful stakeholders at some of the world’s larg-est Fortune 500. “What’s amazing about CLOC and its institutes is the culture of sharing that we’ve been able to foster,” says the head of legal operations at Google. “People [are] willing to share their successes and failures openly, so that we can all grow and learn together. I really don’t think this kind of meaningful collaboration exists elsewhere.” CLOC U.S. runs May 14-16 in Las Vegas.

Next, it’s Techno Security & Digital Forensics: For those looking to drill down into the more nuanced technical aspects of cyberse-curity and digital forensics, Techno Security’s three conferences this year may be a worthy investment. Forensic professionals who have spent their careers largely collecting data for litigation may find this show to be a pivotal educational event for leveraging their existing skills to quickly acquire interdisciplinary ones in cyber. Techno caters to the country by breaking the conference into three regional events, all in well-weathered areas perfect for entertaining clients comfortably outdoors. Privacy professionals in, or looking to be in, security and information governance prac-tice groups will find strong takeaways from mixing and mingling with the hyper-technical who attend. Those looking to bridge the gap between public and private sector collaboration should also find synergy here. Techno Security & Digital Forensics Conference-happens three times in 2019: in San Diego, March 11-13; in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, June 2-5; in San Antonio, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

Fall is for Fest: Right now, Relativity Fest is the must-attend e-discovery conference of the year. Fest, like the IAPP summit, is certainly focused on minting professionals with new certification status at this conference—namely the RCA, but also specialty certs in analyt-ics, assisted review, data processing, RelOne and more—but over the last few years has added enough diverse speakers and education, including partnerships with ACEDS and WiE, to successfully capture most of the ESI community in one location every October. Fest sessions are rich with content that dives deep into the Relativity tool, which still dominates the discovery space, but also inclusive of the aforementioned collision of industries and have thus added content to focus on how ESI touches the security and privacy world. All-day, everyday users of Relativity must be at Fest. Competitors to Relativity are wise to attend to get the true temperature of the e-discovery marketplace and community of buyers. Relativity Fest happens Oct. 20-23 in Chicago.

Finish the year with Enfuse: Enfuse (started by Guidance Software) prides itself on being a place for cross-disciplines to meet and learn. Much like their software (this event is where one would get or renew EnCE®, EnCEP® and CFSR™ certifications), the Enfuse conference brings together elements of e-discovery, infor-mation governance, cybersecurity, and now—even more. OpenText, Guidance’s new parent company, has made a wealth of acquisitions in the last few years including Guidance, Recommind, and now Catalyst. Enfuse will be a great way to see how these products and companies are coming together. Enfuse 2019 is taking place Nov. 11-14 at The Venetian in Las Vegas.
