The Name

Rock Hill was originally a watering station on the Charlotte and South Carolina railroad in 1852. The name came from a notation on a construction supervisors map. The spot where the railroad was to be laid was said to be a small, flinty knoll. So the construction workers named that place Rock Hill and the name eventually stuck.

The Beginning

Alexander Templeton Black was known as the founding father of Rock Hill, South Carolina. The people of Ebenezer didn't want the railroad to run through their town. So Templeton decided to let the railroad be laid through a portion of his property. And eventually Ebenezer would be consumed in Rock Hill’s prospering town.

Winthrop University The governor Ben Tillman elected a board of

trustees for the university. The board opened a bid to South Carolina cities that wanted to serve as a site for the college. Advertisements were placed in the states newspapers for only 30 days. In March 1892 when the board met again only the cities of Anderson and Columbia had offered. But the court ruled that Andersons bonds for 75,000 was invalid. So they reopened the bids and Rock Hill and Spartanburg were now the leading contenders. The trustees visited both cities in order to make a proper decision on which site to choose. But the lay out of Spartanburg's cornerstone of Converse college influenced the boards overall decision. On April 2nd ,1893 10 members of the board of trustees met and 8 out of 10 voted to have Rock Hill as the new site of Winthrop. The college moved to Rock Hill in 1895.
