• Mammals have the ability to maintain a constant body temperature•Because mammals are endothermic, they live in almost any environment on Earth• Mammals are the only animals that have hair which is made from keratin•Hair keeps mammals warm by retaining body heat•Sometimes mammals get too hot so they pant and sweat to cool off•Hair is also used for protection, camouflaging, and communication

What Does Hair Mean to Mammals?

•Mammals feed their young by mammary glands which supplies milk that contains minerals, vitamins, sugars, and proteins• Besides mammary glands, mammals also include sweat glands, saliva glands, digestive enzymes, and hormones• Mammals nurse their young until they are old enough to find food themselves. This time length is different among species.

Why Do Mammals Need a High Level of

Energy?• Mammals need energy when they cool and heat their bodies•They also use energy to move•Mammals keep a high level of energy when large amounts of oxygen enters its body and reaches all the cells• The diaphragm helps accomplish this task by expanding and contracting the chest cavity• Mammals have a four-chambered heart which separates the oxygenated blood from the deoxygenated blood

Why Do Mammals Have Different Types of Teeth?

• Different mammals have different teeth depending on their diets• Pointed incisors are used to hold small animals and chisel-like incisors are for gnawing•Canines puncture and tear• Premolars and molars slice, shear, crush, and grind•Hoofed mammals usually eat plants; therefore, they have an adaptation called cud chewing which enables them to break down the cellulose of plant cell walls into nutrients

What Are Modified Limbs? Modified limbs are arms and legs that are for gathering foodExamples: Primates have an opposable thumb for grasping objects such as fruit and other foods; bats have finger bones that support the flight membranesThese modified limbs also help[ mammals capture prey and keeps them from becoming prey
