A German-born bourbon baron, Isaac Bernheim gave this 14,000 acre sanctuary to the people of Kentucky as a thank you gift for welcoming him to this country. Much of the forest is reserved for research, but the remainder is open to the public and full of seemingly endless trails, picnic areas, and natural beauty. A small but excellent nature center includes a café, gift shop, and education center; programs range from the annual BugFest to discovery stations featuring the flora and fauna of the forest.

The Schmidt Museum of Coca-Cola Memorabilia has attracted almost 1 million visitors from around the world, despite closing in 1999 for two years and later reopening at a new location. The new 32,000 square-foot museum in Elizabethtown – with a huge fist bursting out of the wall that holds a gigantic Coke bottle -- houses more than 1,000 rare Coke artifacts and a total of more than 80,000 items.

Louisville is blessed with a number of fine art galleries, and it could be said that the hottest of these right now just might be the Pyro Gallery. The Pyro Gallery, named for its original location in a renovated firehouse, is a cooperative of 20 local artists who work in a variety of media and formats.
