Trading Cards in General

What is a Trading Card?

A Trading or Collectible card is a small card made out of poster board or thick paper. It contains a image of a person, place, animal, or thing, plus other text such as attacks, stats, weaknesses, ect. There is a wide variation of the subjects of these cards. So usually everyone has a type for them.

Trading cards have 2 categories: Sports Trading cards & Non-Sports Trading Cards. Sport ones usually have information about a player from that sport & non-sport ones usually have a cartoon character, movies stars, people, TV series or even book characters.

Most Trading Cards have games to play with them & sometimes even codes to enter on an online site. Even if they don’t it is easy to make up your own.

Trading Card History.

From around 1887 – 1901, small cloth strips with baseball players names on them were traded like the cards today. These original cards are very rare and can cost up to $878.08.

From 1902 – 1935, Printed baseball cards (more like the ones today) came about as ‘gimmicks’ (an extra toy in a way) came and was sold with Bubble Gum & other things (some like what comes in cereal boxes today). During this period (1902 – 1935), a wide difference in the production of the cards, mainly because the style was new and the people who made them had not decided on a style yet. Many cards had rare flaws & misprints (typos, or part of it not there) because manufacturers were experimenting with different methods.

After 1936 most of the card manufacturers had decided on a style or format and most cards remained the same. The cards became packaged by themselves and became their very own product.
