Served with the English Army He was captured in Hungary by the Turks, and
enslaved. He killed his master, and escaped to England
in the early 1600s.
Before Jamestown
Became part of a council that would govern
the group Began journey at the end of 1606 During the sail, Smith was accused of mutiny
and almost hanged. He was placed into custody. Arrived at Chesapeake Bay in 1607

Released from custody after arrival helped replace president Edward Wingfield
with president John Ratcliffe He was captured by Native Americans, while
on his expedition along the Chickahominy River, and taken to the Algonquin chief Wahunsonacock.

Pocahontas saved Smith from his death. Smith returned to Jamestown.
His Time while Captured
He was imprisoned for losing men on the
unsuccessful Chickahominy expedition. He was soon freed, and became president of
the governing council. In 1609, Smith was badly burned by a
gunpowder explosion. He returned to England the same year,
focused on writing, and died in 1631.
