our stock off the highline and hobbling our

these are the thoughts that got me through that

Howdy Mid Valley members! Wow, I can't

Donaons and the IRS

Vicki Morales, Unit Treasurer

Taxes are tricky, but I finally know how we

(Backcountry members) are to handle donaons if we

want a receipt that can be used for tax purposes. First

the check is made out to the BCHC Educaon Fund.

On the memo line, write Mid Valley Unit (I am presuming that is whom you want your donaon to benefit)

and the acvity you want to support, such as trail maintenance or youth acvies. Then the check is mailed

to BCHC c/o Lynn Joiner 16347 Stephenie St., Bakersfield, CA 93314.

Lynn will deposit the check into the state educaon account earmarked for our Mid Valley Unit. She will also

send a receipt to the donor that can be used for tax donaons. If a receipt is not desired, just mail donaons

to BCHC Mid Valley Unit at PO Box 1709, Modesto, CA 95353.

DUTCH OVEN REPORTBy Vicki Whisler

Looks like we have an excing and fun year ahead! As I menoned last month the year started off with a great turn out at Red Hills for our annual New Year's Day ride and potluck. Then wemoved on to our annual Winter Round Up, which was another great event.

Wrapping up January we hosted the Leadership Training for BCHC Central California at Carl and Julie Perry's. We did a Dutch oven luncheon for those who aended. There were 11 cooks present and 14 dishes prepared. Lots of complements about the food and very few leovers! In February we had a new event, Dan Fox asked us to cook for the Polar Plunge which is a fundraiser to support the Special Olympians in California to go to their events. This was not only a fun event, but very enlightening (at least to me). "The Polar Plunge" has different teams geng pledges of money for plunging into Tulloch Lake. The money supports the Special Olympians for uniforms and sports equipment. In addion, there was also a costume contest, live band, taco wagon, coffee distributor with coffee and hot chocolate, the Sheriff's Depues provided chips, popcorn and other snacks. Some of Dan's group made chili and one person made a big pot of Pumpkin Chipotle Soup. There were six of us that aended from Mid Valley, and we all cooked different variees of cornbread. We enjoyed answering quesons and educang about the Dutch ovens. There was no cornbread le aer all was said and done. At the end of the day we received lots of thanks for cooking and praise about how good all of it was. Thank you to all of the cooks and BIG thanks to those that set up tables and then put everything back in trailer!!!!

th Now for upcoming events-March 7 is a DOG at Crescent Supply at 321 McHenry Ave. in Modesto. Crescent Supply will be offering a 20% discount on all cast iron and Dutch oven supplies. We will be seng up and cooking in front of and on the side alley of the store. I will have the trailer there with the fire pit and briquets. Plan on having your dish ready aer 11AM. Please let me know if you are cooking!!! Text or leave message at (209) 480-0566. Then there is the Rendezvous in Red Bluff from March 27th-29th. Get your reservaons in!! April 17th-19th is our Spring Camp Out at The Mother Lode Ranch (otherwise known as The Rumsey's). We have a DOG potluck on Saturday evening and pancake breakfast Sunday morning.May 16th is a DOG at Dennise Davis's- more informaon and direcons at a later me.If you would like to host a DOG, call or text me at (209) 480-0566, leave message and I will return your call! Thanks again to all of you that help at these Dutch oven events!

Our Sunshine girl needs sunshine this month. Katherine Reeves has

had the flu and is finally beginning to feel human again. And Vicki

Whisler, our Dutch oven leader, fell and broke her le arm on Friday,

Feb. 14th. What a Valenne's Day! We hope both of these ladies,

who do so much for the unit, heal quickly.

VALLEY RANCH

Yosemite Deer Valley Ranch vacaon rentals are located on a working cale ranch in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is surrounded by private property and the Naonal Forrest and only 28 miles from Yosemite Naonal Park and 2 miles from Greeley Hill. We love our ranch and look forward to sharing it with you. There are two homes across the meadow from each other that can be booked separately, but for the same dates. Covered horse pens are available at each home.

There is a lot of parking for your horse trailers and a circular drive for easy access. Miles and miles of places to ride. The homes are furnished with log furniture, western and wild life décor. The ranch has some interesng old barns on it, ponds and an abundance of wild life. This is a great place for a quiet and relaxing get-a-way.

MID VALLEY SPRING CAMPOUT 2020By Carl Perry

thWe have the Annual Spring Campout planning in the works for this year. Our date is set on April 17th-19 ;

the days are Friday aernoon through Sunday at noon. Our place of enjoyment will be at our same locaon,

The Don and Laurel Rumsey Ranch. I know the trails are a bit shorter than before, but it is a great way to leg

up your horses or mules and get them ready for the summer riding. Many people parcipate in the

camaraderie and the weekend getaway. On Saturday evening, for those of you that would like to try your

hand at Dutch oven cooking, there will be many cooks there that would love to help you make your first

Dutch oven experience a reality. We always have a youth parade where the youth paint their animals and

walk across the main camp. We also have a piñata that the kids love to whack at. Last year, we had an

exhibion showing of the interscholasc team and that was a real treat. I believe we will have the team(s)

show their skills again. Come spend the weekend with us and make some new friends. Saturday is always a

fun filled day including our famous ice cream social. There is no one going home hungry aer this weekend.

A registraon form will follow next newsleer.

Valenne's Day Ride

by Jerrie Ann

What a beauful day it was for our “Valenne's Day Ride”. We had 36 riders join in on the fun. Different groups rode for about two hours and returned for a lunch of hot dogs with a variety of toppings. There were contests such as, most colorful “Wild Rag” and other fun things to do. Prizes were awarded to Karen Barindelli for her beauful Valenne Wild Rag, Lee Owning had the lucky cket to win the saddle bags that belonged to CJ Hargraves (thank you CJ for passing on your collecon of backcountry items). Her books were set out for everyone to take and enjoy. My thanks to my sweetheart, Larry, for preparing lunch and everyone else that helped while I was riding. We had a wonderful group, and a great big THANK YOU for all the side dishes. Abegail Prine deserves a big round of applause for all the heart balloons and pictures she took. She is our new photographer and historian. Thank you again to Chrisne Kaplan (our swamper), she is the best at picking places to ride. Watch the newsleer for our next ride. Happy Trails!

Hello New Members! May I have a moment of your me?By Michael King

Just a quick note here to all of the new members of Mid Valley Unit. I first want to thank you all for joining Backcountry Horsemen and specifically Mid Valley Unit. Your membership is very much appreciated. Thank You for joining us! We are very excited to have you.For those who have not yet received your New Membership packet, it will be personally delivered or mailed to you shortly. We are in the process of updang the Mid Valley Unit and BCHC contact informaon, as these have changed with the new year. When that is done, your updated packet will be on its way to you! As new members, we hope to learn a lile more about you so that we can help you get the most out of your membership. Toward that end, Mid Valley has developed a very short telephone quesonnaire to help us know you beer and learn what acvies interest you. Knowing your interests and goals, we can then alert you when acvies are coming up that would interest you. We know your me is valuable, and this will be a oneme only call. Given the situaon now with phone numbers that can come from any area code, our caller (a Mid Valley Unit member) might have a number that is not from the 209 area code. Please, if you can, answer the call and complete the quesonnaire with them. It will help Mid Valley serve you beer. If you miss the call, we will leave a message. Please return the call if possible and complete the quesonnaire. That's about it! Thank you again for your membership. We strive to never forget that our members are most important to Backcountry Horsemen. Always feel free to contact me or any of our directors with quesons you might have. We will get the answers for you.
