Character Quote:Song Stated: Family- TobymacLyrics:

So are we still trying, or simply survivingFacing these giants, the bigger they are the harder they fallBut I still believe in the dreams we’ve been dreaminThe hope that we built onIts never too far, never too farIf we choose to turn and let these walls fall downAre we too far apart? Two worlds among the starsYou’re gonna take a piece of my heart if you leaveSo its two separate waysOr am I too late to say “I wanna fight for what we gotCause I believe in family”In family, in familyI still believe… I still believe…That we're not too far apart? Two worlds among the starsDon’t take a piece of my heart please don’t leaveIt’s not too late to say: “Father show us the wayTo fight for what we gotCause You believe in family, in family”In family, In family

Arrows flying, into silenceBroken pieces, lying around where it went downWaters risin, back to silenceQuietly crying, wondering howAnd look at us nowWe thought our love would take the world by stormAre we too far apart? Two worlds among the starsYou’re gonna take a piece of my heart if you leaveSo its two separate waysOr am I too late to say “I wanna fight for what we gotCause I believe in family”In family

If we choose to turn and let these walls fall downAre we too far apart? Two worlds among the starsYou’re gonna take a piece of my heart if you leave So its two separate waysOr am I too late to say “I wanna fight for what we gotCause I believe in family”In family, in familyI still believe… I still believe…That we're not too far apart? Two worlds among the starsDon’t take a piece of my heart please don’t leaveIt’s not too late to say: “Father show us the wayTo fight for what we gotCause You believe in family, in family”In family, In family

Sung By: Johnny Cash-Let the Circle be Unbroken

There's a better home a-waitingIn the sky, Lord, in the skyWe sang the songs of childhoodHymns of faith that made us strongOnes that mother maybelle taught usHear the angels sing alongWill the circle be unbrokenBy and by, Lord, by and byThere's a better home a-waitingIn the sky, Lord, in the skyWill the circle be unbrokenBy and by, Lord, by and byThere's a better home a-waitingIn the sky, Lord, in the sky

I was standing by my window,On one cold and cloudy dayWhen I saw that hearse come rollingFor to carry my mother awayWill the circle be unbrokenBy and by, Lord, by and byThere's a better home a-waitingIn the sky, Lord, in the skyI said to that undertakerUndertaker please drive slowFor this lady you are carryingLord, I hate to see here goWill the circle be unbrokenBy and by, Lord, by and byThere's a better home a-waitingIn the sky, Lord, in the sky

Oh, I followed close behind herTried to hold up and be braveBut I could not hide my sorrowWhen they laid her in the graveWill the circle be unbrokenBy and by, Lord, by and byThere's a better home a-waitingIn the sky, Lord, in the skyI went back home, my home was lonesomeMissed my mother, she was goneAll of my brothers, sisters cryingWhat a home so sad and loneWill the circle be unbrokenBy and by, Lord, by and by

On page 45 “But Big Ma,” Little man protested. “ ifn that

ole bus driver would slow down, I wouldn’t get muddy!” Then he frowned deeply and added, “ Or, ifn we had a bus like theirs.”

“Well, he don’t, and you don’t.” Big Ma said, getting up. “So ain’t no use frettin’ ‘bout it. One day you’ll have a plenty of clothes and maybe even a car of yo’ own to ride around in, so don’t you pay no mind to them ignorant white folk. You jus’ keep on studyin’ and get yo’self a good education and you’ll be all right…”

Character Quote: Sung By: Swedish House Mafia- Don’t you worry

child Lyrics: There was a time

I met a girl of a different kind.We ruled the world,I thought I'd never lose her out of sight. We were so young,I think of her now and then.I still hear the songsReminding me of a friend.

Upon a hill across a blue lake,That's where I had my first heartbreak.I still remember how it all changed.

My father said,"Don't you worry, don't you worry, child.See heaven's got a plan for you.Don't you worry, don't you worry now."Yeah!

Oh, oh, oh! Oh, oh, oh!

See heaven's got a plan for you[Live version repetitions:]See heaven's got a plan for youSee heaven's got a plan for you

"Don't you worry, don't you worry, child.See heaven's got a plan for you.Don't you worry, don't you worry now."Yeah!

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh! [3x]Yeah!

There was a timeI used to look into my father's eyes.In a happy homeI was a king, I had a golden throne. Those days are gone,Now the memory's on the wall.I hear the songsFrom the places where I was born.

Upon a hill across a blue lake,That's where I had my first heartbreak.I still remember how it all changed.

My father said,"Don't you worry, don't you worry, child.See heaven's got a plan for you.Don't you worry, don't you worry now."Yeah!

"Don't you worry, don't you worry, child.See heaven's got a plan for you.Don't you worry, don't you worry now."Yeah!

Character Quote: Sung By: All That Remains- The Waiting

One Lyrics:

How did you think I would feelYou throw me aside againHow did you think I would feelI won't let you hurt me again now

I'm nothing to you I can seeJust walk away from meI'm torn up but I can't believeYou sat and watched me bleed

How could you do this to meBetrayed by my closest friendHow could you do this to meI won't let you hurt me again

I am the waiting one it seems...

I am the waiting one it seemsDays grow somber quicklyNow how the quiet is releaseAnd I feel so lonely

How did you think I would feelThrow me aside againHow did you think I would feelI won't let you hurt me again now

I'm nothing to you I can seeJust walk away from meI'm torn up but I can't believeYou sat and watched me bleed

She was the one thing I believedThat I needed to hold meStill I can smell her hear her breathFeel her body beside me

How long I've waited, waited for youTo come back to hold meWhat should I, what should I,What should I doWhen I feel so lonelyHow could you do this to meBetrayed by my closest friendHow could you do this to meI won't let you hurt me again now

I'm nothing to you I can seeJust walk away from meI'm torn up but I can't believeYou sat and watched me bleed

What should I,What should I do?Oh how long I have waitedWhat can I,What can I do?When I feel so lonely

Character Quote: Sung By:Gotye- Somebody That I

Used To Know Lyrics:

Now you're just somebody that I used to knowNow you're just somebody that I used to knowNow and then I think of all the times you screwed me overBut had me believing it was always something that I'd doneBut I don't wanna live that wayReading into every word you sayYou said that you could let it goAnd I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to knowBut you didn't have to cut me offMake out like it never happened and that we were nothingAnd I don't even need your loveBut you treat me like a stranger and that feels so roughNo you didn't have to stoop so lowHave your friends collect your records and then change your numberI guess that I don't need that thoughNow you're just somebody that I used to knowSomebody(I used to know)Somebody(Now you're just somebody that I used to know)(I used to know)(That I used to know)(I used to know)Somebody

Now and then I think of when we were togetherLike when you said you felt so happy you could dieTold myself that you were right for meBut felt so lonely in your companyBut that was love and it's an ache I still rememberYou can get addicted to a certain kind of sadnessLike resignation to the end, always the endSo when we found that we could not make senseWell you said that we would still be friendsBut I'll admit that I was glad it was overBut you didn't have to cut me offMake out like it never happened and that we were nothingAnd I don't even need your loveBut you treat me like a stranger and that feels so roughNo you didn't have to stoop so lowHave your friends collect your records and then change your numberI guess that I don't need that thoughNow you're just somebody that I used to know

Misery Lyrics:

I'mma be that nail in your coffinSayin' that I softenedI was duckin' down to reloadSo you can save your petty explanationsI don't have the patienceBefore you even say it I knowYou let your pride or your egoTalk slick to me, noThat is not the way I get downAnd look at how you lose your composureNow let me show youExactly how the breaking point sounds

[Chorus]I wanna see you choke on your liesSwallow up your greedSuffer all alone in your miseryChoke on your liesSwallow up your greedSuffer all alone in your misery

I wanna see you choke on your liesSwallow up your greedSuffer all alone in your miseryChoke on your liesSwallow up your greedSuffer all alone in your miseryI wanna see you choke on your liesSwallow up your greedSuffer all alone in your miseryChoke on your liesSwallow up your greedSuffer all alone in your misery

You did it to yourself [x8]

[Chorus]I wanna see you choke on your liesSwallow up your greedSuffer all alone in your miseryChoke on your liesSwallow up your greedSuffer all alone in your misery

What is it you want me to tell youI am not the failureI would rather live and let beBut you came with the right kind of threat toPush me to let youNo you can't intimidate meYou disrespect me so clearlyNow you better hear meThat is not the way it goes downYou did it to yourself and it's overNow let me show youExactly how the breaking point sounds

Character Quote:

On page 98 “The Wallaces did that, children. They

poured kerosene over Mr. Berry and his nephews and lit them afire.”

“Everyone knows they did it, and the Wallaces even laugh about it, but nothing was ever done. They’re bad people, the Wallaces. That’s why I don’t want you to ever go to their store again- for any reason. You understand?”-Mary Logan

Page 22: By: Claire Trimble. Fighting injustice for family and community.

Character Quote:

Song Stated: Strange Fruit- Billie Holiday Lyrics: Southern trees bear a strange fruit

Blood on the leaves and blood at the rootBlack bodies swingin' in the Southern breezeStrange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant SouthThe bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouthScent of magnolias sweet and freshThen the sudden smell of burnin' flesh

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluckFor the rain to gather, for the wind to suckFor the sun to rot, for the tree to dropHere is a strange and bitter crop

Event:

After T.J., R.W., and Melvin robbed the store, T.J. threaten to tell on them. T.J. got a beating from them, they left him by a pool hall; and T.J. found a way to the Logan’s house. He confessed to the children about what had happened, because they wouldn’t believe him or help him without the truth. Once they got him home, and were about to leave, 6 cars drove up to the Avery’s house. After the night men throw all the Avery’s out their house ( including the little children) and beat T.J. and his parents Mr. Jamison arrives and tries to stop it.

Page 28: By: Claire Trimble. Fighting injustice for family and community.

Event:

The 4 children get T.J. home and are then witness to the attack on the Avery family. Mr. Jamison shows the other side of how some people were. Mr. Jamison’s actions show that not all white people were evil.

Page 29: By: Claire Trimble. Fighting injustice for family and community.

Event: Sung By: John Fischer- Righteous man Lyrics: I want to be a more righteous man. I want to be a more Godly man. Teach me to do what I can, follow closer to You. I want to follow a different drum. Even if I’m the only one. I want to hear when I’m done “You did well, my son.” Ooooh Wont you take a look around your brothers Ooooh why Tell me why doesn’t anybody want to try Anymore?

Ooooh Wont you take a look around your woman Oooh why Tell me why doesn’t anybody want to cry?

Page 30: By: Claire Trimble. Fighting injustice for family and community.

Event: While this is happening Cassie,

Christopher-John, and Little Man go back to their house to tell their Papa. On page 259 - Papa was about bring his shotgun, but mama stops him. Mama says “But there’s another way. Some way they wont kill you too. Get Harlan Granger to stop it. If he says so, they’ll go on home.” After awhile they smell smoke, and every one believes that it was lightning that starts the fire on Granger’s land. This distracts everyone from hanging T.J., and all they come together to help put out the fire.

Page 31: By: Claire Trimble. Fighting injustice for family and community.

Event:

This event shows how in the face of catastrophe even bitter enemies can work toward a common good. This event shows how Papa’s quick thinking and sacrifice helped save lives.

Event: Sung By: James Taylor- You’ve Got a Friend Lyrics:

When you're down and troubled and you need a helping handand nothing, whoa, nothing is going right.Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be thereto brighten up even your darkest nights.

You just call out my name, and you know where ever I amI'll come running to see you again.Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is call and I'll be there, yeah, yeah, you've got a friend.

If the sky above you should turn dark and full of cloudsand that old north wind should begin to blow, keep your head together and call my name out loud.Soon I will be knocking upon your door. You just call out my name, and you know where ever I amI'll come running to see you again.Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is call and I'll be there.

Hey, ain't it good to know that you've got a friend? People can be so cold. They'll hurt you and desert you. Well, they'll take your soul if you let them,oh yeah, but don't you let them.

You just call out my name, and you know where ever I amI'll come running to see you again.Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is call, Lord, I'll be there, yeah, yeah, you've got a friend. You've got a friend.Ain't it good to know you've got a friend. Ain't it good to know you've got a friend.Oh, yeah, yeah, you've got a friend.
