Shaving off of our hair was a horrible

experience. It made me feel utterly

vulnerable and reduced to a complete

nobody. I had to give up my clothes as well,

and I stood there stark naked, bald, and with

a number on my arm. In just a few minutes, I

had been stripped of every bit of human

    dignity and become indistinguishable from

    everyone around me.

When we arrived at the camp we were told that the pipes for

water and sewage had not yet been installed in the barracks, and

that we would be doing the work to complete the job. We spent

the next weeks, which seemed endless, working 16 hour days of

hard labor. We dug the trenches for the pipes, poured the

concrete and carried the pipes. It was exhausting and made

worse by the living conditions and lack of proper clothing. My

feet ached like never before in my life. I was issued old and

worn shoes that didn’t fit and were inappropriate for the work

they demanded us to do. It was excruciating.

In the spaces below, write a set of journal entries from the perspective of a prisoner

who would have been in the Nazi concentrations camp and from the perspective of a

German guard who would have worked at the camp. Write the journal entries in

regards to a typical day in the camps and how each would have viewed it.

For the prisoner journal entry, you need to consider what conditions the prisoners

would have faced on a daily basis and what they may have been thinking while in

    the camps.

For the guard journal entry, you need to consider how the guard would have viewed

    and treated the prisoners.

The journal entries are meant to be unique and meaningful to what the people in the

situations would have thought. Your responses also need to be historically accurate.

    Written Response Evaluation

EXPLANATIONS AND SUPPORT (8 marks) COMMUNICATION (2 marks) Excellent

E 8 Explanations are deliberate and comprehensive,

revealing a perceptive understanding. Support is

specific and accurate, and errors, if present, do not

detract from the response. A thorough understanding

of the assigned task is demonstrated.

2 The writing is fluent and purposefully organized.

Vocabulary is precise. The writing demonstrates

    confident control of sentence construction,

grammar, and mechanics. Errors, if present, are

    inconsequential.

    Proficient

Pf 6.4 Explanations are appropriate and purposeful,

revealing a clear understanding. Support is relevant

and appropriate, but may contain some minor errors.

A clear understanding of the assigned task is

    demonstrated.

1.6 The writing is straightforward and clearly

organized. Vocabulary is specific. The writing

    frequently demonstrates effective control of

    sentence construction, grammar, and mechanics.

Errors do not detract from communication. Satisfactory

S 4.8 Explanations are general and straightforward,

revealing an acceptable understanding. Support is

relevant but general, may be incompletely developed,

and/or contains errors. An acceptable understanding of

    the assigned task is demonstrated.

1.2 The writing is generally clear and functionally

organized. Vocabulary is adequate. The writing

    demonstrates basic control of sentence

construction, grammar, and mechanics. Errors do

not seriously interfere with communication. Limited

    L 3.2 Explanations are overgeneralized and/or redundant,

    revealing a confused, though discernible,

understanding. Support is superficial, may not be

always relevant, and may contain significant errors.

An incomplete understanding of the assigned task is

    demonstrated.

0.8 The writing is uneven and incomplete, but is

    discernibly organized. Vocabulary is imprecise

and/or inappropriate. The writing demonstrates a

    faltering control of sentence construction,

    grammar, and mechanics. Errors hinder

    communication. Poor

P 1.6 Explanations are tangential or minimal, revealing a

negligible understanding. Support, if present, is

incomplete, may be marginally relevant, and contains

significant and/or frequent errors. A minimal

understanding of the assigned task is demonstrated.

0.4 The writing is unclear and disorganized.

Vocabulary is ineffective and frequently incorrect.

A lack of control of sentence construction,

    Source 1?

    a. relatable

    b. identifiable

    c. understandable

    d. unrecognizable

    2. What is the central message of Source 1?

The speaker is talking about how they were made to feel like they were less than

human when a prisoner at a camp. They state that they feel like they lost their

identity when they were forced to give up their clothes and shaves their heads.

    3. What does the body of the man standing in Source 2 tell you about what the

    prisoners experienced in the camps?

The man is extremely thin. He looks as though he has not eaten in a very long time.

It could be concluded that he is being starved and that the prisoners were extremely

    malnourished.

    4. Considering how the author is treated and feels in Source 1, why do you think

the Nazi’s would force this upon the prisoners?

Dehumanizing the prisoners like this would destroy the prisoner’s spirit and perhaps

make them more manageable and better at following orders. Also, dehumanizing

the prisoners would make it easier for the guards to carry out the deaths in the

    camps.

    5. What were the conditions of the barracks in which the prisoners lived? Use

Source 2 and 4 to answer the question.

Cramped, Improper Sewage, Improper Water Supplies, Lack of Food, Dirty, Lack of

    Bedding, etc.

    6. The gates in Source 3 read “work sets you free”.

    a. Why would the Germans put this message on the gates to the

    concentration camp?

To give the prisoners hope and try to hide the truth of the camps. Giving the

prisoners hope might make them more manageable.

    b. How would this make the prisoners feel?

The prisoners might feel hopeful, as though they have an opportunity to get out of

    the situation.

    c. When also considering Source 4, what else can be said about the nature

    of the Germans?

The Germans were cruel for suggesting that the prisoners still have a chance at

freedom considering the true nature of the camps, and how the prisoners would be

    treated in the camps.

    7. Which of the following could be best used to replace “excruciating” in Source

    4?

    a. painful

    b. pleasant

    c. tiring

    d. boring

    8. In what way are Source 1 and Source 5 comparable?

Source 1 is discussing how the author felt dehumanized and how all of the prisoners

were made to appear the same as to suppress their identities. Source 5 shows a

similar situation in that all of the prisoners are in formation and dressed the same.

The intention of this assignment is for students to consider multiple perspectives in

relation to the concentration camps and the overall realties of the Holocaust. While it

might be unrealistic that a prisoner would write a journal entry while being

imprisoned, you could tell the students to write it from the viewpoint of someone

who survived the Holocaust and is writing about their experiences.

    Rubric included.
