Why did ww2 begin?

Adolph Hitler disobeyed the treaty that was made in ww1 and started to invade in secret all the countries around him and Britain said that if he didn't give back what wasn't his they would declare war.

The beginning of evacuation

In WW2 children were evacuated to the countryside for their own protection against the German bombs. They all lined up in school to get ready to get on the train to be evacuated from all over the city's and towns epically London because of its many factories. They carried very little with them including a gas mask encase of poisonous gas.

Being evacuated

When being evacuated all you were aloud to bring spare pare set of clothes, pyjamas, gas mask and some sandwiches for the trip. When arriving at the station, at the correct destination they would be taken to either an empty field or a school yard to be chosen for the evacuation family’s.

At the start of ww2 the British expeditionary travelled to France to start the war properly. But the Germans knew our plan so decided to meet them in France and also thought while there at it they should also invade France and expand the German Empire. Once they met they started fighting again and Germany over powered England so we had to retreat back to Dunkirk.

When and what was the phoney war?

In 1939-1940 at the end of September Germany and Russia had defeated Poland

every one expected Germany to attack western Europe with his tactics. Nothing happened for over year in this war.

What was the blitz

In the summer of 1940, Hitler decided to invade Britain, his plan was to take control by flying across the English channel and By destroying the royal air force and then to send German troops to invade. In July 1940 Hitler put the plan into operation, the German air force began to bomb Britain daily. Then royal air force took the skies and they were many battles between the German and the British planes over the south coast of England. although British losses were high and at the beginning of this war to try a new tactic to conquer Britain.

Which cities were involved

At 4:46 am on the 7th of September 1940 the air raid sirens wailed as the German air force (Luftwaffe) launched a massive raid on London over 350 bombers flew across the channel from airfields in France and dropped 300 tons of bombs on the docks and streets of the east end of London.

How did the people in British cities protect themselves?

By September 1939 some 38 million gas masks had been given out, house to house, to families. They were never to be needed. People bought bomb shelters. Poor families would hide under the staircase (if they had a house.) Also a steel table was available if you didn’t want to leave the house. Some people would hide out in the underground stations.

The blackout

When did The Blackout begin?

Britain was blacked out on 1st September 1939, two days before

the outbreak of war.

What was The Blackout?During the war, everyone had to cover their windows and doors at night (before sunset) with heavy

blackout curtains, cardboard or paint.

They needed to prevent any glimmer of light from escaping and aiding enemy aircraft during their bombing raids.

Street lights were switched off or dimmed and shielded to deflect their light downward. Traffic lights and vehicle headlights were fitted with slotted covers to deflect their beam down to the floor.

Rationing

During the Second World War many food and drink items were in short supply. This was because much of the food came to Britain on ships from abroad. Around 70% of food in Britain was being imported. At this time, the ships of the Merchant and Royal Navies were being sunk by the enemy ships and submarines (called U-boats) of Germany.

• Who organised it?

• The government organises all the food to families but some families bought food from the black market.

Why was it needed?To make sure that everyone got a fair share,

the government was worried that as food and other items became scarcer prices would rise and poorer people might not be able to afford things .There were also a danger that some

people might steel items, leaving non for the others.

• What was rationed?• During the Second World War many food

• Food, clothes and petrol.

D-day D-day began on the 6th of June 1944. It was supposed to begin

on the 5th of June but bad weather held everything up. D-day didn’t only involve the British and the German the American and Canadian helped out on the British side as well. The American, British and Canadian took over different beaches. The American took over UTAH and OMAHA, the British took over GOLD and the Canadian took over JUNO and SWORD. The whole idea of this was to liberate the French from the German. After 11 weeks and 4 days the American, British and Canadian had freed Paris.

The Aftermath of D-day

Once the troops had made their way part of the way through France. On the 25th of August Paris was liberated.
