Editorial PP Quah Sek Cheng President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

The 44th PRC Installation

“It is well that there is nothing in Rotary so sacred that it cannot be set aside in favour of things better. This is an experimental age in a changing world, and all things which are worthwhile and progressive are cumulative effects of preceding success and failures” Paul Harris, Peregrinations, Vol. III

Experiment we did, we changed the format of the 44th PRC Installation. We maintained the dignity of an Installation but have reduced much of the usual formality.

When the organizing committee first met in February, PDG Paul floated the idea of a less formal installation which I keenly supported. Personally, I have always felt that Rotary may have accumulated too many traditions; some are definitely valuable, but some may be of less benefit. The Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation themselves have been making great efforts by constantly evaluating and updating their own policies in order to meet with challenges of the future.

It is with this same spirit that I was receptive to the adaptation of CLP in our Club in RY 2010/2011. We should hope to receive feedback from our PRC members whether these” experiments” are successes to build on or failures to learn from.

Fellowship & gratitude

When all the hustle and bustle of the Installation calmed down, I sat back and reflected on all those people who contributed to this event.

My sincere gratitude to PE Steven Oon, VP Heng, Secretary Lawrance Annies, Treasurer Roy, Rtns Sandy, Jeff, Alex, Edward, Peng Huat, IIP Robin for planning and organizing the event. We had many bitter sweet hours of evening meetings hosted by Steven which has formed the foundation for the 44th board members to work together in the months ahead. We are also grateful for the wise counsel from PDG Paul, PP Sim Bee, PP VG & PP Phang who kept us constantly in focus.

Thank you PP Phang for once again producing an excellent Installation magazine, and all the Rotarians who provided advertisements in the magazine. Thanks to Patrick Lee for the printing and to Robert Tan the club photographer. Thank you Fellowship Chairman PP Richard Liew for sourcing plenty of drinks to make the occasion merry. Thank you too to all Rotarians who contributed the drinks. Thank you to PP Kumar, who entertained us with all his clean jokes. (I admire your tremendous restraint in keeping the jokes clean!)

It was in 1992 that PRC became the first established Rotary Club in the district to admit a lady Rotarian. It was a bold move with much apprehension on both sides……the lady Rotarian PP Rosemarie Wee and the PRC. It is to be appreciated that up to that point of time admitting women into Rotary has only just been introduced and approved by Rotary International. It was still a hot debate and the decision to admit women into Rotary was left to each individual club.

In Pudu , the idea for introduction of lady Rotarian was done covertly at first to test water and then finally overtly when the opportunity presented itself in the form of PP Rosemarie Wee (Rose). Rose helped to organized numerous fund raising functions and her ability didn’t go unnoticed. But in the way were two very seasoned and respected Past Presidents to convince and win over to the idea of having ladies as members. However overcome we did, but so as not to spoil the story we have reprinted the article “WHAT HAS ROSEMARIE GOT TO DO WITH DEAD BODIES?” to enlighten many new Rotarians that may not have known that ladies in Rotary was a big issue back in the 90’s.

The credit for introduction of ladies into Pudu Rotary Club shouldn’t go to those enlightened Rotarians spearheaded by our energetic and innovative Rotarians PP Dato PY Choong and PP Choo Jee Sam. Credit should also go to PDG Paul Lee who later famously went on to say that, “Having ladies in Pudu Rotary was a mistake, it should have been done much earlier.” The Lesson? PRC has the ability to quietly win over and overcome obstacle not by direct confrontation but rather through sensible gentle persuasion that creates a win-win situation.

Today we have many lady Rotarians in the Club and President Choy Ying now holds the distinction of being the second lady president, even if she does not feel that gender should be an issue at all as all Pudu presidents have to earn their ‘stripes’. So true, as she is elected to this position because she has shown and proven her ability to lead and galvanize the club. She has her own leadership style and the Club can expect her to do her best with the full support of the Club’s membership.

We wish her an enjoyable and meaningful next 12 months.

WhaT haS dead bodIeS goT To do WITh RoSeMaRIe?

At the first meeting of President Rosemarie Wee IPDG Dr Paul CK Lee introduced our new President for Rotary Year 1999/2000. He said that our first lady President is known as Mrs Wee to her staff, Rose to her friends, Mdm President to Rotarians of Pudu Rotary Club, darling to her husband Captain Wee, Mrs Captain to people in show business and to her sons and daughters, “sister”.

Paul then went to trace the history of admission of ladies into Rotary Clubs. He said that when RI endorsed admission of ladies into Rotary Clubs in 1989, he made a pact with PDG Dr Philbert Chin that if any ladies are to be admitted to their clubs, then they will resign.

Then in 1992, Pudu organised the major fund raising dinner known as The Platters Charity Night to raise RM360,000 for the various programmes of the club. That was a mammoth project he himself would not dare to venture. In the earlier years, when the club wanted to bring ex-drug addicts to climb Mount Kinabalu, he threw cold water on the project and objected strongly. The club ignore his objection and the project was a success. The following year, the club wanted to get polio victims to row down Klang River and he again objected strongly. He was again ignored and the project was another success. When the club followed through with a project getting handicapped children to Pulau Perhentian, he dared not object and the project was again a success. Thus he realised that his ideas were out of date and he join the band-wagon to be a member of the organising committee.Noticeable at the Committee Meeting was an elegant lady who was participating in the organising of the Charity Dinner and she was not one of the Club Members. Little did he realise that there was a conspiracy going on. After the successful charity dinner the then President Choo Jee Sam (who happened to be proposed into Rotary by Paul), asked him how he graded Rosemarie as a worker. He said that she was excellent; better than many of our own members. Then President Sam asked if he would consider letting Rosemarie join Pudu. He was stunned! Then Sam said that since we all consider Pudu as a premier club, then we must set the pace for others to follow. We should admit good ladies into our club to show that it is not lady Rotarians who cause problems to Rotary Clubs but wrong lady members. When he relented, Sam asked if he could do another favour. The favour was to speak to the other Past Presidents to get their approval! The first Past President he spoke to was PP Tan Sri A Tharmalingam. He asked “Uncle Tharma, what do you think of Rosemarie from Shangri-La? Would you be able to reconsider and allow her to join our club?” To this Tan Sri replied “I never objected to ladies joining Rotary. I was supporting you when I registered my objection.”Thus, two dead bodies were resurrected! Indeed two happy bodies now dote on our President Rosemarie to demonstrate that you can sometimes teach old dogs new tricks. It also shows the great spirit of Pudu rotarians.(Berita Pudu Issue 3/99-2000)

President’s Message ....(continue from page 2)

Thank you PP Gary & Jeff for your smooth organization of the transportation of the sister club members. To all the Rotarians that have volunteered their time to provide transport and great fellowship with the sister clubs. Thank you, Steven & Ann Boon Kee for graciously hosting the Fellowship dinner for the 2nd time. We appreciate that you have also done up your beautiful garden in time for the event. Not forgetting Dila, who has been the backbone in

helping Steven in all the organization of our Rotary events.

Thank you to all Pudu Rotarians who supported in attending the sister clubs fellowship dinner and in purchasing table and inviting guests and family to attend the Installation dinner.

Finally, I am intensely grateful to many Past Presidents and Pudu Rotarians that are silently supporting my efforts.

With so much gratitude in my heart, should I wonder why I am still in Rotary, particularly in PRC instead of another service organization? Although everyone of us in Pudu have our own “idiosyncrasies” and we are an unlikely bunch of

friends, we are stuck together, through sunshine and rain.

To all our new members, do make an effort to get to know these great people.

On the District Level,

RC Kg Baharu & RC Gombak is conducting a motivational talk at SMK BU4 on 13 – 14 July from 10am to 1pm. Rotarians are invited to be facilitators to the group discussions.

There will be a Public Relations workshop on 14th August 2010 from 8 – 2 pm. More details will be disseminated later.

Programme Chairman Rotarian Sarky introduced our Speaker Puan Noraini Hashim as the Vice-President & Coordinator of Media & Publicity in OrphanCARE.

She holds a BSc Hons in Physics & MSc in Environmental Technology from the Imperial College, University of London. She spent 8 years in the Ministry of Energy, handling energy statistics and energy planning, and 19 years in BP starting with petrochemicals business development and going on to Corporate Social Responsibility where she planned & implemented programmes focusing on environmental awareness and conservation.

She left BP at the end of 2009 intending to do part-time consultancy but has ended up being a volunteer with OrphanCARE and Viva Palestina Malaysia.

Our guest speaker Puan Noraini Hashim spoke on the subject of OrphanCare & Malaysia’s First Baby Hatch.

OrphanCARE is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established in April 2008, under the patronage of HRH Sultanah Kalsom of Pahang. It aims to give every orphan and abandoned baby the love, care and security of a family in accordance with their tagline: “Every child needs a family”

OrphanCARE was set up to help change society’s mindset towards orphans, recognizing that children should not be left permanently in orphanages which should really only be ‘transit points’ before they are placed with families who can bring them up in a proper family structure. Orphanages are unable to provide babies and children the love, care and security offered by families. There are increasing numbers of babies born out of wedlock, many of whom are left in waste dumps, bushes, drains, public toilets among other places. OrphanCARE was set up to discourage the abandoning their babies by providing the assurance that the babies would be placed in good homes.

WhaT TheN doeS orphanCaRe do?

OrphanCARE coordinates and works with the government to expedite the adoption process whereby abandoned and orphaned babies are quickly matched up and placed with suitable parents.

Their activities involve working with the government to study present difficulties and obstacles hampering quick, efficient and smooth adoptions. Constructing a database of all current Malaysian orphans and interested adoptive families with complete background profiles. Coordinate with orphanages, single mothers shelter homes, hospitals and clinics. Matching orphans with suitable intended families. Assisting the Welfare Department with pre and post adoption counselling for both the child and new family. Continuously monitoring the situation to ensure smooth and efficient adoption.

Importantly Malaysia’s First Baby Hatch was launched on 29th May 2010 at their OrphanCARE Centre at 6, Lrg SS1./24A in Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya.

With the establishment of the Baby Hatch at OrphanCARE’s premises, it is hoped that there will be a reduction in the number of babies abandoned. The aim is to discourage women, especially young unwed mothers who have nowhere to turn to for help, from abandoning their babies by providing the assurance that their babies would be placed with caring parents.

To their credit, to date they havearranged 17 successful adoptions involving 9 newborn babies as well as 8 children aged 4-12. The first baby was deposited at the Baby Hatch on Saturday 26th June and went home with his adoptive parents on 6th July. OrphanCARE currently has a database of almost 300 parents who wish to adopt both babies and older children.

OrphanCARE wishes to appeal to orphanages and shelter homes who have orphans in their care to work with OrphanCARE to match these children with parents who can provide them the necessary love and care. OrphanCARE is perhaps the only NGO seeking to reduce the number of children in orphanages. At OrphanCARE we believe –

For the RY 2010/11, our club has decided to adopt the Club Leadership Plan (CLP), a plan that was introduced by the Rotary International some time back.

In my opinion CLP is a form of re-engineering exercise to keep up with the global social changes. CLP could be a means to further develop and enhance the survival and functions of Rotary Clubs worldwide.

With the advent of the ‘digital science’ the world has progressed by leaps and bound. We are indeed living in a borderless world, where by just a click of the mouse, we could chat, talk, email and video conference with anybody any where.

We should adopt changes with time or we will be come irrelevant in no time.

This year I have decide to take up the post of the SERVICE DIRECTOR. Initially I thought I was a little bit crazy since the scope of work entail the works of 2 avenue of services, namely, the vocational and the community service.

President’s Announcement
