Friends of the Baldwin City Library 2011 Annual Meeting By Cynthis Beall

The Friends of the Baldwin City Library at its an-nual meeting on March 15, 2011 joined in celebrating the Kansas Sesquicentennial and, along with other Ameri-cans, noted the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Several members of the Santa Fe Historical Society also attended the meeting. Most Americans will not think of events in Kansas in connection with the Civil War. Yet Kansas’s birthday coincides with this event. At the meeting Brian C. Miller, assistant professor of history at Emporia State Uni-versity, presented Kansas and the Civil War in American History and Memory, a critical re-examination on how the Civil War affected the state of Kansas and why the Kansas struggles have been largely ignored in American history. Dr. Miller received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Mississippi. He has researched, published, and lectured extensively about the public memory of the Civil War. Dr. Miller’s presentation is part of the Kansas Humani-

ties Council’s Kansas 150 Speakers Bureau com-memorating the Kansas sesquicentennial.

More than 50 people attended the meeting and presentation, which was held in the Community Room at the public library. As part of the meeting activities, the officers of the Board were formally elected, including Barbara Pressgrove as president, Cynthia Beall as vice president, Peggy Baker as Secretary and Anne Walker as treasurer.

President’s Letter By Barbara PressgroveSpring is always a busy time and ourFriends of the Library organization is involved with lots of projects to promote reading, libraryactivities, and fund raising events. Thank youto all the dedicated Board officers and volunteerswho make these projects a success. Theseprojects include the Book Talks, the Annual meetingwith guest presenters, the Night of 1000 Stars, the spring plant sale, and our annual City wide garage sale. This year we also present the Cathy Roberts Scholar-ship to a junior or senior high school student and Board members comprise the selection committeethat names the recipient of the scholarship. Ourcommunity is fortunate that our library is situatedin the center of downtown where it can be thehost of many worthwhile events.

We have added a new educational computer station to our collection. The Early Literacy StationTM is a complete educational solution loaded with 50 educational software titles for kids ages 2-10 in the English edition. The Station offers children a safe, standalone computer not connected to the Internet that is age-appropriate, engaging, and aca-demically relevant for children. The Station has a colorful keyboard and tiny mouse to promote easy learning and discovery.

The Station’s educational software covers seven cur-ricular areas: reading, math, science, social studies, writing, arts & music, and reference. The system is designed to at-tract and educate toddlers through early elementary school ages.

The titles include:• Millie’s Math House• Stationary Studio• Math Doodles• Photo Kit Jr. • Just Grandma and Me• Giggles Toddler ABCs & 123• Giggles Toddler My Musical World• Dora The Explorer• Sesame Street

The Station has an imaginative interface that encour-ages exploration. Many of the software programs contain disguised learning activities that expand the child’s experi-ence through games and extension activities.
