Images and paintings using ultra-violet light and flat colour, with backlighting. / Bar, Phoenix Picture House / November / 512526 EXHIBITIONS Well produced and well performed, Skylight played to a full house on Tuesday and deserves one for the rest of its run. Lovers at opposite ends of the ideological spectrum try and fail to make the other understand and appreciate their values. The story is convincing, the issues real and the arguments well balanced. The two main characters, Tom and Kyra, are realistically complex, each representing a viewpoint but neither conforming entirely. There are no easy answers; you will find your sympathies divided between the two sides. Richard Goulding, Rosamund Pike and Alistair Sooke are well cast as Tom, Kyra and Edward respectively. Not only do they act the parts well, but they also look right. Alistair convincingly captures the body language of a well meaning but slightly socially inept adolescent. He says and does both the right and the wrong thing with equally clueless aplomb. Rosamund is a suitably ageless and slightly unfathomable Kyra. She listens to Tom in apparent acquiescence only to throw all his arguments back at him moments later. Richard’s appearance, tone and movement as Tom is almost too accurate- every inch the businessman, it takes longer fully to empathise with his character. He handles the difficult task of making a serious argument whilst simultaneously being the source of the play’s humour well, only occasionally being a little guilty of playing to the audience – was it just me or was there a bit of Tony Blair in him? The strong acting is complemented by an excellent set. The attention to detail in creating Kyra’s kitchenette is well rewarded as the actors make full use of all the space and objects available. Dialogue takes place over the sideboard, sitting at the table, standing with hands resting on a chair back, every corner of the stage is brought to life as part of a living house. This is helped by the superb working kitchen, where the taps run, the water boils and the onions sizzle – the fact that you notice that they don’t quite sizzle enough to be cooked only emphasises the completeness of the real-time, real life illusion. In this home, as dinner is cooked, tea made and a taxi called, there is a natural flow of human dialogue rather than a logical argument. The mood changes are quick, the play tight and fast moving. The sparing use of anger, punctuated by moments of easy laughter, has the audience with them at all times. The play finishes but you feel the story goes on; the issues raised surround us daily. Offering the audience advice such as “a haddock in a paddock is better than a crab in a lab,” and “I’d rather slaughter a rabbit than whistle in the garden,” Ionesco’s play is surreal and hilarious. The action is set in a suburban London drawing room. Mr & Mrs Smith and Mr & Mrs Martin are presented as middle class benchmarks, with some sturdy lines like, “The only respectable thing in England is the Royal Navy”. Meanwhile, the lady of the house obsesses over which shop purveys the best mayonnaise. However brilliantly the cast portray their characters, this is an anti-play where Ionesco’s satire is the real star - try as we might, the audience never gets close to the actors. Truly amazing is the way Dominic Lash (Director) is able to bring out so many themes in this complex piece of writing. I spotted a few old chestnuts, like how much of our everyday conversation is unthinking and ritualistic. Sections of the play let us fantasise about what it would be like to say what we are thinking out loud as the cast reveal what is going on in their heads. We take a glimpse at what life is like for the two couples brave enough to be on stage when reality is suspended. We hear Mrs Smith firmly argue that “when the doorbell rings this means there is nobody there” as the play examines whether truth is important in our lives. I imagine people who are addicted to the glossy lifestyle of today’s suburban London might miss the irony of whether truth is important. If all this sounds a little serious, be reassured that the audience laughed loudly and often all the way through the performance. The humour is brought out with imaginative use of movement and excellent timing, whilst the satire is always hanging in the balance with lines like “a maid is always a maid...she hasn’t had the necessary education”. Overall this is an excellent piece of Oxford student drama. It is intelligent and witty, and the standard of production and performance verges on the professional. Should you feel the need to debate the ideas, you’re left with enough time to get a round in at the pub afterwards. The title of the play was taken from an absurd English phrase book and the play ends with the question on everyone’s lips “What about the bald prima donna?” The reply? “She always wears her hair the same way”. Oh well, ask a stupid question. Lita Doolan, 14 / 11 / 00 THEATRE REVIEW Death and the Maiden, Death and the Maiden, Death and the Maiden, Death and the Maiden, Death and the Maiden, by Ariel Dorfman Bur Bur Bur Bur Burton ton ton ton ton Taylor ylor ylor ylor ylor Theatr Theatr Theatr Theatr Theatre until e until e until e until e until Satur Satur Satur Satur Saturda da da da day 18th y 18th y 18th y 18th y 18th Set in an uneasy period of transition from dictatorship to democracy, Dorfman’s play explores a powerful conflict: can you seek justice for the victims of past oppression without perpetuating the vicious circle of violence and revenge? Gerardo Escobar (Jonathan Fowles) returns home triumphant. He has been appointed to the commission responsible for investigating human rights abuses under the old dictatorial regime. Surface tensions in his relationship with his wife Paulina (Rebecca Wilcox) hint at darker conflicts – both are struggling to come to terms with her sufferings as a victim of rape and torture. She remains deeply unconvinced of his ability to secure justice through official channels. When she hears a stranger talking to her husband in the living room, she recognises the voice of her most insidious tormentor and seizes the chance to pursue her own form of revenge. The stranger, Dr Roberto Miranda (the long-suffering Bryan Leach), is bound to a chair for the rest of the play and put on trial at gunpoint. His fate depends on whether Gerardo, “the voice of civilisation”, can prevail over Paulina. Their conflict exposes the inadequacies of official justice in dealing with the sufferings of private individuals, as well as the incompatibility of private revenge with democracy. Some first night nerves (an initial misjudgement of the BT’s acoustics, the occasional fluffed line) were deftly covered up and more than made up for by the strong performances of the actors. In Fowles we see a pillar of the new society struggling to reconcile his public duty with his private life. Wilcox’s performance conveys the brittleness of a character oscillating between vulnerability and violence. Her victim deserves extra applause: enduring a mouth stuffed with freshly worn tights is above and beyond the call of artistic duty. Relevant and thought-provoking, Dorfman’s play raises many profound questions without suggesting easy answers. EXHIBITIONS

Well produced and well performed, Skylightplayed to a full house on Tuesday and deserves onefor the rest of its run. Lovers at opposite ends of theideological spectrum try and fail to make the otherunderstand and appreciate their values. The storyis convincing, the issues real and the argumentswell balanced. The two main characters, Tom andKyra, are realistically complex, eachrepresenting a viewpoint but neitherconforming entirely. There are no easyanswers; you will find your sympathiesdivided between the two sides.

Richard Goulding, RosamundPike and Alistair Sooke are well castas Tom, Kyra and Edwardrespectively. Not only do they actthe parts well, but they also lookright. Alistair convincingly capturesthe body language of a well meaningbut slightly socially inept adolescent. He says and does both the rightand the wrong thing with equallyclueless aplomb. Rosamund is asuitably ageless and slightlyunfathomable Kyra. She listens to Tom inapparent acquiescence only to throw all hisarguments back at him moments later. Richard’sappearance, tone and movement as Tom is almosttoo accurate- every inch the businessman, it takeslonger fully to empathise with his character. Hehandles the difficult task of making a seriousargument whilst simultaneously being the source ofthe play’s humour well, only occasionally being alittle guilty of playing to the audience – was it just

me or was there a bit of Tony Blair in him?The strong acting is complemented by an

excellent set. The attention to detail in creatingKyra’s kitchenette is well rewarded as the actorsmake full use of all the space and objects available.Dialogue takes place over the sideboard, sitting atthe table, standing with hands resting on a chairback, every corner of the stage is brought to life

as part of a livinghouse. This is

helped by thesuperb workingkitchen, wherethe taps run,the water boils

and the onionssizzle – the factthat you noticethat they don’t

quite sizzle enough to becooked only emphasises the

completeness of the real-time, reallife illusion. In this home, as dinner is cooked,

tea made and a taxi called, there is a naturalflow of human dialogue rather than a logical

argument. The mood changes are quick, the playtight and fast moving. The sparing use of anger, punctuated by moments of easy laughter, has theaudience with them at all times. The play finishesbut you feel the story goes on; the issues raisedsurround us daily.

The Bald Prima Donna is a classic piece from the theatre of the absurd. Offering the audience advicesuch as “a haddock in a paddock is better than a crab in a lab,” and “I’d rather slaughter a rabbit than whistlein the garden,” Ionesco’s play is surreal and hilarious. The action is set in a suburban London drawing room.Mr & Mrs Smith and Mr & Mrs Martin are presented as middle class benchmarks, with some sturdy lineslike, “The only respectable thing in England is the Royal Navy”. Meanwhile, the lady of the house obsessesover which shop purveys the best mayonnaise.

However brilliantly the cast portray their characters, this is an anti-play where Ionesco’s satire is thereal star - try as we might, the audience never gets close to the actors. Truly amazing is the way DominicLash (Director) is able to bring out so many themes in this complex piece of writing. I spotted a few oldchestnuts, like how much of our everyday conversation is unthinking and ritualistic. Sections of the play letus fantasise about what it would be like to say what we are thinking out loud as the cast reveal what is goingon in their heads. We take a glimpse at what life is like for the two couples brave enough to be on stagewhen reality is suspended. We hear Mrs Smith firmly argue that “when the doorbell rings this means thereis nobody there” as the play examines whether truth is important in our lives. I imagine people who areaddicted to the glossy lifestyle of today’s suburban London might miss the irony of whether truth is important.

If all this sounds a little serious, be reassured that the audience laughed loudly and often all the waythrough the performance. The humour is brought out with imaginative use of movement and excellent timing, whilst the satire is always hanging in the balance with lines like “a maid is always a maid...she hasn’t hadthe necessary education”.

Overall this is an excellent piece of Oxford student drama. It is intelligent and witty, and the standardof production and performance verges on the professional. Should you feel the need to debate the ideas, you’re left with enough time to get a round in at the pub afterwards.

The title of the play was taken from an absurd English phrase book and the play ends with the questionon everyone’s lips “What about the bald prima donna?” The reply? “She always wears her hair the sameway”. Oh well, ask a stupid question.

Set in an uneasy period of transition fromdictatorship to democracy, Dorfman’s playexplores a powerful conflict: can you seekjustice for the victims of past oppressionwithout perpetuating the vicious circle ofviolence and revenge?

Gerardo Escobar (Jonathan Fowles)returns home triumphant. He has beenappointed to the commission responsible forinvestigating human rights abuses under theold dictatorial regime. Surface tensions in hisrelationship with his wife Paulina (RebeccaWilcox) hint at darker conflicts – both arestruggling to come to terms with her sufferingsas a victim of rape and torture. She remainsdeeply unconvinced of his ability to securejustice through official channels. When shehears a stranger talking to her husband in theliving room, she recognises the voice of hermost insidious tormentor and seizes thechance to pursue her own form of revenge.

The stranger, Dr Roberto Miranda (thelong-suffering Bryan Leach), is bound to achair for the rest of the play and put on trial atgunpoint. His fate depends on whetherGerardo, “the voice of civilisation”, can prevailover Paulina. Their conflict exposes theinadequacies of official justice in dealing withthe sufferings of private individuals, as well asthe incompatibility of private revenge withdemocracy.

Some first night nerves (an initialmisjudgement of the BT’s acoustics, theoccasional fluffed line) were deftly covered upand more than made up for by the strongperformances of the actors. In Fowles we seea pillar of the new society struggling to reconcilehis public duty with his private life. Wilcox’sperformance conveys the brittleness of acharacter oscillating between vulnerability andviolence. Her victim deserves extra applause:enduring a mouth stuffed with freshly worntights is above and beyond the call of artisticduty.

Relevant and thought-provoking,Dorfman’s play raises many profoundquestions without suggesting easy answers.
