How earthquakes form- Earthquakes form when huge plates of rocky crust move suddenly. The plates are then split by many cracks called faults. The edges of the plates are rough and can get stuck as the plates grind past each other. The forces within the Earth’s mantel that move huge plates of crust around the planets bend or deform, the rocks along fault lines. As rock bends energy builds within it. When the plates can no longer resist the energy the edges unstick along the fault and rocks snap and slip forward.
