By: Annie Lappin Pickleball in Bay Forest has had a very active summer, even though the temps were in the high 90’s, the participants numbered in the teens. Due to Covid we have been doing things a little differently than last fall and plan to continue to do so this fall. 1. Bay Forest at this time is not providing pickleballs, you will need to bring your own to the courts. 2. We are also recommending that the ball that is used be wiped down after every game with a bleach towel or placed in a bucket of bleach water. The sign up board that was on the side of our bulletin board last year has been moved over by the sitting area on its own post at the end of the 2nd court. This is to encourage people to take advantage of the benches and not block the pathway into the Pickleball and Tennis courts as well as helping maintain appropriate social distancing. Only paddles that have been approved for use at Bay Forest can be used on our courts. There is a list of approved paddles in the office as well as in the bulletin board or you can check the Sun City Grand web site. When you bring your paddle in to the office, Annie will provide a sticker to signify an approved paddle. New players are always welcome. If you would like to learn the basics of Pickleball you can signup in the office for a lesson. A member of the Pickleball committee will meet you at the courts at an agreed upon time with a couple of paddles for you to use during your lesson. The Pickleball committee will be meeting this month with additional information in next months Bugle. The Book Group will not meet in November due to COVID -19 concerns and Club House restrictions. We do not meet in December but are discussing possible options for meeting in January, such as bringing our own chairs and meeting outside. If you have any questions, please call Pat Wood at 239-597-8118.

Pickleball in Bay Forest has had a very active summer, even though the temps were in the high 90’s, the participants numbered in the teens.

We do not meet in December but are discussing possible

our own chairs and meeting outside.

  • Hoping that the Tennis Tidbits will be a signal that Bay Forest Tennis is ready to begin play. Pandemic aside, we can say truthfully that the tennis courts are in

wonderful shape. We are grateful to Phil and the crew for maintaining our unsurpassed facilities. What is uncertain will be when our tennis players will

return and how safe are flying and driving. We are feeling better that there are so few local folks who have tested positive, and no tennis players for the

virus. Bay Forest is truly a remarkably safe environment for year-rounders and snowbirds. But players and observers should follow proven safety

protocols, wearing face masks and maintaining six-feet distances as long as Covid-19 remains a threat.

When players return, they will find that all is in order, ready to go. Initially, all the courts should be open. The women's and men's round robins will allow everyone to access morning play, Mondays through Saturdays. The women and men should find available courts 8:30 and 10:30 AM. Mixed Doubles Sunday mornings, when we have numbers, are organized through Marie

Laliberty. Otherwise, Sunday mornings will be available for all. Please sign up on the board under the center Tiki Hut, and erase your name after

play. The courts are watered a little after 12:00 PM, so don't begin afternoon play until 2:00 PM, or when the courts are visibly dry. ALL players must

wear flat-soled tennis shoes and the men should leave sleeveless (muscle shirts) in their sock drawers. Those are the only dress requirements.

Children must be supervised, and the courts swept and the lines brushed after all play. The grounds crew will prepare the courts around 8:AM, but

after that we are responsible to keep the area in an orderly fashion.

New players should ask regulars if the rookies have any questions. Social events, team play and tournaments might take place from January, 2021 on

and will be posted and described in future tennis tidbits. Informal gatherings after play should follow the described safety guidelines.

Welcome back everyone and stay safe.

  • Steve and I will not be going to BF this year due to COVID19 which is very sad for us but as Canadians and our age is a huge factor we need to be safe and close to our

medical facilities. If things improve in early 2021 and there is a vaccine we might go, who knows what 2021 will bring.

Steve Rose is running Zoom Yoga classes as he is not going to Florida this year either. Many of the yogis from BF Yoga are part of this group and Steve is OK with

anyone who wants to join in if Zoom is available to them. They need to register with me and I will send them a waiver which they have to agree to. After that I will send them

    login information.

Thanks so much and hoping you and yours are doing well.

I am hoping all of Bay Forest and the Bay Forest Staff are healthy and well and continue to stay that way. At this time, Ping Pong cannot be played in The Clubhouse. Stay tuned for the

    plans in January.

  • This will be a very different social season.

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel all Social Committee events through the end of December 2020 to protect the health &

    welfare of our community.

For the same reason, we have cancelled the Social Committee Meetings until further notice.

Please check the bulletin boards & the Bugle for any changes. If you have questions or suggestions call either

    Ruth Defuge (239) 325 – 8115 or Pat Wood (239) 597 – 8118.

  • President’s Message - October 2020

    COVID- 19 Update

Who would have guessed last spring how quickly things can turn around. In April and May, Florida was setting up barriers on Route 95 to keep folks out of the state who were driving in from the Northeast, especially from New York and New Jersey. Now it is the northern states who do not want people from Florida visiting them! Pat and I just returned from six weeks in Massachusetts. Because we were coming from Florida, we had to either get a virus test or quarantine for two weeks to enter the state! There the positivity rate is less than 1.0 %. Florida as a whole is slightly under 5.0%, and Collier County is about the same. This is a huge difference from MA. Less than one random person in 100 in Massachusetts is carrying the virus, while one person in 20 in Collier County is carrying it and is contagious. Massachusetts requires masks throughout the state, and in my opinion this, plus 6’ social distancing, is responsible for nearly all the huge differences in counts between Florida and Massachusetts. Florida never had a statewide mask mandate, and just recently fully opened the restaurants and the bars to 100 %. The positivity rate around mid-October will show whether this was wise or not. All that being said, Bay Forest, to my knowledge, has only had two confirmed cases, both recovered. The year-round folks here (I guess about 150, or so, of us) have been pretty careful, and we have avoided most of the virus. We hope it stays that way, and your Board will set some rules and regulations at the October Board Meeting to try and protect our residents, as best we can.

Come to our next board meeting, which will be on October 21 at 9 AM. We will have a “Simul-Cast” using our new Zoom account. The meeting web address will be sent out via the Email Blast - click on that link and you are good to go, assuming your computer has a camera and microphone. Even if you don’t, you can still watch. Most laptops have this, as do cell phones. Download the Zoom app. We will observe social distancing at the meeting and masks must be worn. Agenda items will include the following:

Clubhouse Activities: We as a board have not decided on clubhouse activity procedures for October/November and indeed the rest of the season. The Social Committee has decided not to have any events this fall - Wednesday Night Social, Halloween Party, Welcome Back Party, and Christmas Tree Lighting. It is likely that the rest of the social season will be cancelled as well.

Clubhouse Use: The board will come up with rules that will keep everyone as safe as possible. These most likely will include social distancing and mandatory mask wearing. If the Activity Leaders (Yoga, Bone Builders, Line Dancing, etc.) can come up with a way to do their activities under these rules, their plan must be approved by the Board.

Pickleball Expansion: We will discuss but not vote on anything at this meeting. We have pricing to share on two locations - along Royal Fern and the conversion of Tennis Court #4 to dual use. The conversion quote was very expensive, and coupled with my reluctance to destroy an amenity makes this option unlikely. Again, we will discuss but not vote on anything.

  • Guests: We need to define who a guest is, as far as using BF facilities such as the fitness center and pickleball courts. The Social Committee defines a guest eligible to purchase event tickets as a house guest - not a friend living nearby, a personal trainer, etc. We want to limit use of our facilities, especially now with COVID-19 issues, to as few people as possible from outside BF. I feel we need an official Board statement on this, and adding it to our Rules.

Using BF Facilities for Profit: I feel that BF facilities should not be used for profit, either by residents or outsiders. This would include clubhouse use by insurance salesmen conducting “information seminars", financial advisers doing the same, Pilates instructors, and the like. It also includes personal trainers in the fitness center, and "pros" giving tennis lessons. I am not opposed to "free-will" collections at the year's end of sessions, as these are really gifts, and not required for attendance. Again, I think we need a Board statement on this, and an addition to our Rules. Exceptions may be possible, if approved by the Board.

I hope you are at the October meeting. Give the Zoom option a try if you are not in Naples!
