Winter/Spring
Vol. 20, No. 1
Illinois received the second round of Race to the Top Funding. The 2
nd round allowed the states to apply for ½ the funding and
therefore Illinois will receive $35 million over the next 4 years to increase the quality of child care programs. There will be changes to the Quality Rating System (QRS) program. Through our website, Facebook, emails, and special mailings, we will let you know as we have more specific information to share. Payments will continue to be issued approximately three weeks after entry into the system. For budgeting purposes, most providers should expect that the time frame to receive a check will change from two weeks to three weeks after entry into the system. Did you know that most creditors will change your due date if you tell them your pay date was changed? Try arranging your due dates toward the end of the month when you’ll most likely have your payment. Our phone lines have been extremely busy with questions about payment. The only information we have is whether or not the payment was entered. This and other payment information is available from the payment line at 1-800-804-3833. You can also press option #4 on our phone system which takes you directly to the payment information line. Don’t forget. . .
Professional Development and Accreditation funds are available this fiscal year. The forms are available – go on our website or call our office!
Remember, quality early care and education allows children to learn and families to work – a formula for success. Let your Legislators know how important child care is to you. Go to www.actforchildren.org to find your legislator.
Are you passionate about working with children, but not sure what the next steps are for your career? Let us help you develop a plan for success that builds on your passion- working with children! Professional Development Advisors (PDAs) have extensive early care and education (ECE) and/or school-age (SA) work experience, education, and knowledge of available resources. They can guide you in furthering your professional development and advancing your career. Research has shown that 68% of those who worked with a PDA met goals or made significant progress towards their goals while participating in the program!
A PDA can provide assistance in the following areas:
Exploring careers in early care and education or school-age care
Creating a personalized professional development plan
Providing guidance in building a professional portfolio
Locating available courses and professional development opportunities in your area
Helping you decipher different early care and education or school-age care credentials and certificates and their requirements
Sharing resources for financial assistance to be used for coursework or training
Coaching you on how to find the information you need to accomplish your goals
Finding help with basic English or Math skills, or support for learning the English language.
The best part is that these services are FREE and only requires that you are involved within or interested in the field. You can utilize a PDA’s expertise for as little as one hour—or for as long as you need help getting on the right path toward reaching your career goals.
PDAs are also available to visit child care centers and meet with center staff on an individual basis to further career development. Center advising is planned around a schedule that works for program administrators/center directors and staff. PDAs can assist staff in developing and achieving individual professional development goals to further their career.

Challenging those Challenging Behaviors Presenter: Tanya Blackshear, Early Childhood Educational Consultant Challenging behavior in itself is a challenge to manage and is enough to make the best of early childhood professionals see birds fly in circles over their heads! Now, add the expectation of needing to be “creative”, “calm” and “one-step-ahead of the child”, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for how to grow gray hair by age 30! Come and be a part of a fun and funny creative workshop that is informative and creative by combining compassionate confrontation with problem-solving so that you will be empowered to manage the most difficult of challenging behaviors while communicating respect for the child and yourself.
Games for All Ages:
