As you will see from the Festival programme,we have retained the original ethos of 2002,when The Festival was first founded, byincluding all Chorlton residents, whatever theirages or level. We believe that everyone shouldbe accepted as an artist irrespective of theircapabilities. We would like to thank all our supporters,sponsors, artists, events, patrons, partners,volunteers and the Chorlton community. Thiscould not have happened without them.Everyone has had the same goal, to makeChorlton Arts Festival a success. It was good to see that all the artists andvenues have enjoyed the build up to thisfestival and we hope you enjoy it just as muchas we enjoyed creating it. Usually Chorlton Arts Festival takes place inMay, but because we are running it later thisyear, it will be run in conjunction with ChorltonBook Festival and so you will see that the BookFestival information is included in ourprogramme. We had to send the programme artwork tothe printers early in September, and becausenot everyone knew there was an Arts Festivalon this year, some artists will not havesubmitted their details in time for the copydate.

Artist who sign up late will be entered intothe online programme. If you go online to theweb site: www.chorltonarts.org/prog or go onto social media, you will find the updates asthey happen. So, without further ado, we invite you todelve into the contents and pick out the eventsthat you fancy, but don’t forget to make placefor some of the less experienced artists whoneed nurturing and your support. Everyone hasto start somewhere: remember the Bee Geesstarted their career on a stage in Chorlton’svery own Gaumont Cinema in the late 1950’s.

ALL THE USUAL VENUES & SPOTSJust as in previous years, the festival will takeplace in all the usual venues around Chorltonand more exciting new ones have been added. Island Vibes will be hosting the opening,and the closing night will be at South WestManchester Cricket Club (SWMCC). The Lloyds,The Font and The Creameries will haveprominent positions in the festival. Lots of thepubs, cafes and bars will have pop up eventsand the churches and schools will all play theirpart. Look out for some of the more wackylocations like Ken Fosters Cycles - art in a bikeshop! What next? And then there are the parks, streets andopen spaces with pop up events, buskers andentertainers for your delight. If it doesn’t rainand wash it away, look out for our children andeven the grown-ups chalking on thepavements. Whatever type of art, visual, performing orliterary it’s all out there in our Chorlton. And this year we are teaming up withChorlton Book Festivalwith events at TheLibrary and The Edgeand Andrew Simpson’shistory walk aroundChorlton-cum-Hardy.

OUR VERY OWN PATRONSJason ManfordBorn in Salford, Jason went to school atOakwood, which is now Chorlton High, and wastaught by our very own Ed Wyllie, who was oneof the founders of the Chorlton Arts Festival. Jason Manford is not a stranger to Chorlton.In 1999 at the age of 17, while collectingglasses at the Buzz Comedy Club in Chorlton,his lucky break came. When a performer didn’tarrive for an evening set, he stepped in to fillthe gap and the rest, as they say, is history.

LipServiceMaggie Fox & Sue Ryding, not just Chorlton’sfunniest female comedy duo, but in ouropinion, the funniest in the world. Meeting asDrama students at Bristol University, theyturned a very serious Ibsen production of LadyFrom The Sea into a side splitting comedy. They went on to be some of the firstwomen to be part of a new comedy movementin the eighties, called Alternative Cabaret,which was a welcome move away from thesexist, racist, homophobic, and “mother-in-law” jokes of the times. Every show they do isa tremendous success, especially their latestshow, Strangers On A Train Set.

Stephen RawThe artist from London who told all his friendshe would be back in just over 6 months, andover 40 years later he is still in Chorlton. Stephen is a textual artist who started hiscareer producing bespoke lettering andcalligraphy for book covers. Later, he wascommissioned by JR Tolkien’s son to handdraw the maps for The Lord of The Ringsbooks. He has his designs on several of our £1and £2 coins, and besides the lettering aroundthe organ pipes at Manchester Cathedral,closer to home he designed the coloured glasswindows in Chorlton Central Church.

JOIN US AT CHORLTON VOICEChorlton Voice is Chorlton’s Civic Society,affiliated to the North West Association of CivicSocieties. Membership is open to all with aninterest in Chorlton and is free. Our aims are: to preserve, develop and improve theamenities, environment and other features ofthe area, which go to make pleasing conditionsto live and work; to stimulate public interest in care for thecharacter, beauty and history of the area; to encourage high standards of architectureand town planning in the area.

We hold bi-monthly meetings (secondTuesday of the month, 7.30 in the CommunityRoom at the Library), publish a bi-monthlynewsletter, organise talks and trips, scrutiniseplanning applications, and hold quarterly bring-and-share social events. We link closely withother groups in the area to share informationand support each other.
