Berthoud Weekly Surveyor January 23, 2014 Page 5 Praise & Worship OBITUARY S ince the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum in Berthoud was opened to the public on July 19, 1980, it has been manned by volunteer do- cents or trained guides. In 1980 some of the museum’s first docents were volunteers from the Berthoud Historical Society Board of Directors. That year the directors included Aileen Huppe, Frances Nielson, Dr. R.B. Fickel, Dr. Helen Fickel, O.D. Mayo, Eunice Salomonson, George Deines, George Jensen and Preston Barrowman. They opened the museum on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the sum- mer months. In the museum’s early years docents led visitors through A.G. Bimson’s stone blacksmith shop. Filled with old pho- tographs and arti- facts, the stone shop was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Duties for docents increased later when the frame structure next door, Elmer Carlson’s 1940 auto repair shop, was pur- chased to double the size of the museum complex. With space available behind the Bimson and Carlson buildings, A.G. Bimson’s barn (2002), a replica of John Bunyan’s back- yard observatory (2004), the Meadow Hollow country school (2005) and the Charles Meining1874 Homestead Cabin (2011) were added to the mu- seum grounds. By the early 2000s the days the museum was open were expanded to Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. In 2009 a gift shop was opened in the Bimson Stone Shop building and docent duties grew to include the sales of merchandise, event tickets and calendars produced annually by the Berthoud Historical Society. In the year 2014, 34 years after the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum opened to the public, regular volunteer docents include Jim Crisp, Dick Magee, Julia Magee, Linda Mathias, Kathy Mulder and Sam Waldo. Avis Haworth was among that group but recently retired from her duties after working as a docent for many years. Crisp, who will soon cel- ebrate his 90th birthday, is the senior member of the group. Crisp, who is familiar to many members of the Berthoud commu- nity, moved to Berthoud in 1997 af- ter a long career with IBM. Born in Panama, where his parents taught missionaries to be teachers, Crisp en- listed in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and worked as a flight engineer at a training field in La Junta, Colo. When the Korean War broke out he found employment with IBM who hired him, in part, because he was exempt from further military service. After he retired from IBM, Crisp vol- unteered as an EMT before he moved to Berthoud and hooked up with the Berthoud Historical Society to be a museum docent. Crisp is breaking new ground by becoming the first individual in their 90s to serve as a docent at the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum. Also a stamp collector and history buff, Crisp generally docents every other Saturday but also fills other shifts when needed. And like Waldo, Crisp’s docenting service at the muse- um will soon be measured in decades rather than years. Since 1980, when the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum opened its doors for the first time, the facility has grown and undergone many changes. The project that is cur- rently underway will add an outdoor venue in the museum’s back yard as well as trees, bushes and gardens that have been badly needed for many years. One thing that remains the same is the group of friendly volunteer docents like Crisp, whose experience living in the community gives the mu- seum a small-town air that is unique among the museums along Colorado’s northern Front Range. Leigh Josserand May 6, 1955 — Jan. 6, 2014 Leigh Josserand, 58, passed away during the night of Jan. 6, 2014, at his home in Loveland, Colo. Born May 6, 1955, to Hazel E. and Guy D. Josserand Jr. of Dodge City, Kan., he spent most of his career as a mill- wright, detailer and mechanic for Dodge City Corn Grain Elevator and later for Colorado Tractor Corporation in Loveland, Colo., until his forced retirement in 2012 due to degen- erative scoliosis. Fishing was his great love since childhood and also music and building things with his hands. He loved marksman- ship, building bicycles and reading. Intrigued with the novels of Hunter S. Thompson, for example, he once found his phone number and spent quite some time in conversation with him. Leigh lived in Berthoud for a number of years at apartments on Fourth Street. He always had a big smile on his face, a patient ear and a kind word. Leigh cultivated a very dry wit, the unique turn of phrase, and a self- deprecating humor. Mostly he was always finding a way to help out in any way that he could. Leigh gave of himself and of all he had. Megalacardia is listed as contributing to his heart failure. His heart was twice the normal size, but many of his friends feel it was much, much larger than that. Leigh is survived by his parents; Hazel E Stos of Springdale, Nova Scotia and Guy Josserand Jr. of Dodge City, Kan., Letitia Josserand also of Dodge City and Guy ‘Josh’ Josserand III of Tucson, Ariz. Preceding him in death are his grandparents; Guy D. and Gertrude (Cleghorn) Josserand Sr. and Ro- land Leigh and Mabel Porter of Nova Scotia, Canada. OBITUARY

Since the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum in Berthoud was opened to the

public on July 19, 1980, it has been manned by volunteer do-cents or trained guides. In 1980 some of the museum’s fi rst docents were volunteers from the Berthoud Historical Society Board of Directors.

That year the directors included Aileen Huppe, Frances Nielson, Dr. R.B. Fickel,

Dr. Helen Fickel, O.D. Mayo, Eunice Salomonson, George Deines, George Jensen and Preston Barrowman. They opened the museum on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the sum-mer months.

In the museum’s early years docents led visitors through A.G. Bimson’s stone blacksmith shop. Filled with old pho-tographs and arti-facts, the stone shop was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

Duties for docents increased later when the frame structure next door, Elmer Carlson’s 1940 auto repair shop, was pur-chased to double the size of the museum complex.

With space available behind the Bimson and Carlson buildings, A.G. Bimson’s barn (2002), a replica of John Bunyan’s back-yard observatory (2004), the Meadow

Hollow country school (2005) and the Charles Meining1874 Homestead Cabin (2011) were added to the mu-

seum grounds.By the early

2000s the days the museum was open were expanded to Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. In 2009 a gift shop was opened in the Bimson Stone Shop building and docent duties grew to include the sales of merchandise, event tickets and calendars produced annually by the Berthoud Historical Society.

In the year 2014, 34 years after the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum opened to the public, regular

volunteer docents include Jim Crisp, Dick Magee, Julia Magee, Linda Mathias, Kathy Mulder and Sam Waldo. Avis Haworth was among that group but recently retired from her duties after working as a docent for many years. Crisp, who will soon cel-ebrate his 90th birthday, is the senior member of the group.

Crisp, who is familiar to many members of the Berthoud commu-nity, moved to Berthoud in 1997 af-ter a long career with IBM. Born in Panama, where his parents taught missionaries to be teachers, Crisp en-listed in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and worked as a fl ight engineer at a training fi eld in La Junta, Colo. Crisp is breaking new ground by

becoming the fi rst individual in their 90s to serve as a docent at the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum. Also a stamp collector and history buff, Crisp generally docents every other Saturday but also fi lls other shifts when needed. One thing that remains the same is the group of friendly volunteer docents like Crisp, whose experience living in the community gives the mu-seum a small-town air that is unique among the museums along Colorado’s northern Front Range.
