Meet your BVDC Officers & Directors! Each month we will introduce one or two of the current BVDC Officers/Directors in the newsletter so that you can get to

know the people who are representing you!

Anna Klumpp - Director 2012 - 2013

I have been a member of the BVDC for at least 15 years and a member of the ADS since 1996. I am also a current member of the Delmarva Driving Club (DDC) and the CAA. I have completed Level II of the CAA Driver Proficiency training. I have participated in the BVDC as a competitor and volunteer but have never held a BVDC Board position until now. I began driving Pony of Americas breed shows, and my interest in driving quickly expanded beyond just ring driving. Currently I drive miniatures and have shown both singles and pairs, and hope to someday put together a 4-in-hand of minis. My minis are at a limit of 37"-38". I am working at Preliminary level in Combined Driving with my 8 year old mare Mighty Aphrodite ("Ditty") and prior to that showed RR Mini Robin's Shadow who is now in partial retirement. She made a rare debut last year at the Susquehanna Whips and Wheels show as the leader in a

tandem. I have three young horses in various stages of training, and Mungojerri, an 8 year old grullo gelding who tolerates helping the youngsters learn to drive with a partner. Jasper, my mini donkey, is the farm pasture ornament and babysitter. I routinely drive on and around my farm, located in Still Pond, MD and have access on occasion to neighboring farms . I also drive at area parks in Maryland, including Fair Hill. The picture is of Robin and I at SVWW 2010 show as a single.

Teresa Palumbo - Director 2012-2013

Like many of you, I was bitten by the “horse bug” at an early age. I remember having an imaginary horse named Silver when I was 3 and he went everywhere with me in the back seat of the car! My grandparents had horses and ponies and I loved the time I spent at their farm while growing up. I owned my first horse when I was 16 and earned money for his board by babysitting. After finishing high school, I spent a year with my grandparents on their farm in Virginia. I was then bitten by another “bug” when I had my first experience driving Nancy, a little Shetland type mare my grandfather bought. I was hooked! I remember pouring through my grandfather’s horse books looking for pictures of driving horses to make sure I had all the harness pieces fitted correctly. A few months later I took Nancy to a little local show that offered a driving class. We won only because the only other competitor’s horse looked more like a fire breathing dragon than a horse and spent more time airborne than trotting! I then taught Nancy’s 2 year old daughter and my grandfather’s 3 year old Arab filly to drive…oh my, if I had known then what I know now! Somehow we all managed to survive. I returned home to Pennsylvania and stayed involved with horses, but it was about 10 years before I was able to return to driving; this time with my homebred Arab filly, Ailla. Honestly, I still didn’t know much, but I was very careful and took my time with lots of groundwork. Ailla was just a natural and we did quite well showing at local shows offering driving classes. A series of horses with health problems left another gap in my driving career. But, it was during this time that I learned of and joined BVDC through fellow members Sandi and Ken Messner. I started volunteering for various events and audited a few clinics…finally starting to learn the right way to do things! I was surprised when I was asked to be on the Board, but agreed to take on another challenge. I served as Secretary for my first term and now as a Director. I take care of the E-Lines and D-Lines mailings, help with the website and other tasks as needed. Recently I organized the Continuous Drive which was a whole new experience! My current driving partner is Ollie, a 12.2hh pinto pony of unknown breeding. He started life as an Amish pony and we have struggled for a few years undoing his rough start. Last year after the Kendalwood Open House I approached PJ Crowley about lessons. After hearing Ollie’s history, he suggested having him looked at by the “Kendalwood Team” for physical issues first. With the help of everyone at Kendalwood, Ollie is a much more comfortable and happy pony and I am finally learning to drive properly!! None of this would have happened without my involvement in BVDC. I encourage everyone to get involved in some way. Events and activities can’t happen without everyone working together.

BVDC Continuous Drive Event May 27th at Canvasback Farm, MD

Sunday May 27th found lots of smiling faces at Canvasback Farm in Port Deposit, MD. This event could not have

happened without our gracious hosts, Doc and Luanne Riddle, sharing their

lovely farm with us for the day. The grounds were freshly mowed thanks to

Jacques Grillet and courses designed by Luanne were clearly marked with

help from Pat Kozakowski (who also transported the BVDC equipment to

Canvasback Farm). A total of 15 fun seeking competitors enjoyed the day of

relaxed competition. There was a nice mix of training and preliminary level

competitors. A few “first time ever” competitors (and new members) as well as

some seasoned, well experienced

campaigners enjoyed the stress free day.

They started their Continuous Drive with a

Dressage test judged by Anne Councill

(who brought a new, eager driver, Traci, to

scribe for her!), then proceeded to Cones judged by Cindy Lundgren and

timed by new member Mary Grez with Caren and Evan Grez resetting

the occasional ball down. After a brief rest, if needed, they were sent out on the

1.75K Cross Country course by Cindy Boddy

and Kathy Meyer (another new member).

Their start times were generously spaced as

cross country was “any pace” and we didn’t

want those choosing to walk all or most of it on

this hot day to slow down the more eager and energetic equines. The course took

drivers along the edges of fields and through the woods with 2 water crossings and

an optional “hazard” with Darrell and Katherine Martin watching and keeping

them on course. The last part of the drive was a Gambler’s Choice class judged by

Patty Moshanko with Nicole Martin timing and Pat Kozakowski resetting

obstacles as needed. The Dressage, Cones and Gambler’s Choice areas were all

fairly close together. Mark and MaryLou Lawlor directed traffic between the

areas, getting drivers into dressage on time and helped to calm a few nervous

“newbies”. John

Kozakowski ran scores

and made sure judges and volunteers had plenty of

water. Dee Roy and Linda Johnson had lunch set

up by 11:30. Competitors could enjoy sandwiches,

salads, snacks and cold drinks at their leisure and

volunteers as soon as they finished their duties. Everyone

was finished shortly after 1:00 pm and enjoyed lunch

and a delicious birthday cake for our hostess Luanne

while I finished scores. Ribbons were awarded and

dressage tests handed out to lots of smiling faces! I heard

lots of “thank you’s” and “this was so much fun”, etc.

Everything was cleaned up, packed up and Canvasback

Farm was nearly deserted by 3:00 pm. What a Fun Day!

Thank you to the competitors for supporting the event!

Thank you to all the volunteers who made this a fun day for the competitors! I could not have done it

without all of you! And one more thank you to Margaret Grillet who patiently answered what seemed like 100’s

of questions I had as a first time organizer! Well done everyone!! Submitted by: Teresa Palumbo

BVDC Oley Valley Pleasure Drive Saturday, June 23rd (rain date June 24th)

“The Oley Valley, Berks County, is located in the south east corner of Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles west of Philadelphia. The Oley Valley is among the most unique and picturesque regions in the Schuylkill River Heritage Area. The Valley is formed by the gentle rise of the Oley Hills and is dissected by the gently flowing Manatawny and Pine Creeks. Oley is home to some of the most significant 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania German farms to be found anywhere in the Commonwealth. Settled in the 1720s, many of the Valley's current residents are descended from families who have been here for centuries. The Oley Valley is the birthplace of Daniel Boone, the Unitarian Universalist Church, and is one of the most agriculturally productive regions in

Pennsylvania.” Courtesy: oleyvalley.net

BVDC General Membership Meeting

Sunday, July 15th at Eden Hill Farm

Jerry Trapani from Long Island, NY will be our guest speaker. Jerry has a wealth of knowledge

that he’ll graciously share with our club on two topics:

Topic #1 - CAA Driver Proficiency Testing Process The CAA Driver Proficiency Testing program will help

to increase your awareness and knowledge of driving,

how to do so safely and correctly, and earn you a CAA

Driver Proficiency Certificate. In addition to evaluating

drivers’ proficiency at the various levels, this program

also allows for those interested in becoming driving instructors to accomplish the prerequisites at

the levels. This will ensure the standard for traditional driving and horsemanship skills will

continue.

Topic #2 - Barefoot vs. Shoes Jerry was one of the farriers for the 1993 World Pair Championships, and again

was scheduled to be a farrier for the ill-fated 2000 World Singles

Championships at Gladstone, NJ. He has shod national and regional

champions in many disciplines, including “Sympatico”, the 1973 world indoor

high jump record holder. In 1983 he wrote “Equine Hoof Care” (Arco), now

out of print, but still used as reference material in shoeing schools.

Meeting Details:

When: Sunday, July 15th; 1st session will start at 11:00 am followed by lunch; the afternoon

session will begin right after lunch and end by approximately 2:00 pm.

Where: Pat Kozakowski’s farm located at: 311 Mount Eden Road, Kirkwood, PA 17536

Info & RSVP: Anna Klumpp 410-708-3588 email: [email protected]

About Jerry Trapani: An accomplished Whip and Horseaholic, Jerry enjoys

driving his team of 4 black Morgans and riding them as well with his wife and

friend of 34 years Rita from their home at Shadbelly Farm. In 1985 he authored the

book Equine Hoof Care by Arco Press. Now out of print it sold over 35,000 copies

worldwide. Certified by The American Farriers Association, The Guild of

Professional Farriers, he has written many articles for magazines and books and is

a popular speaker on many equine topics. Jerry has been elected to the board of

the Carriage Association of America and was the safety committee chair and is

now the Carriage Showcase Committee co-chair. He has helped design several

successful carts and carriages. He has also completed the Carriage Association of

America’s highest level of Driver’s Proficiency and is a certified instructor and evaluator. He also does carriage

and harness appraisals and has been an expert witness in several equine related cases. He and Rita judge at

dressage, events and sleigh rallies and do clinics for all levels of equestrians. A life member of both the CAA and

ADS, he was the founding president of the Paumanok Driving Club and the Vice chairman of the Friends of

Glen Willow… A New Beginning

For those who were sad that a popular Mid-

Atlantic combined driving event – The Laurels –

would no longer be on drivers’ fall schedule,

take heart! The Glen Willow Combined Driving Event has been established and

will take place on the same dates, September 7-9, 2012 and at the same

location as The Laurels. A new organizing committee has been formed, headed by

Lisa Stroud, Ann Pringle, Newt Brosius, Dan Rosenthal and Lisa Singer.

While much will remain the same: the obstacles, the dressage arenas, the

stabling location, etc., Glen Willow CDE will not be a clone of the old Laurels.

The event will follow the traditional 3-day format, with dressage (2 rings) on

Friday, Marathon on Saturday and Cones on Sunday. The event will be simpler,

less extravagant than in years past, dictated somewhat by the economy, but also a

desire by the organizers to cater to the wants and needs of the competitors. The

organizers are committed to providing a well-organized, fun, efficient competition

for all involved.

Complete information can be found in the Omnibus of the American Driving

Society or at their website: www.americandrivingsociety.org, but here are some

highlights:

Dates: September 7-9, 2012

Officials: Judges: Garrit Kraai (NED), Marsoe LaRose (CAN), Martha Nicoll (USA),

Kail Palmer Miller (USA); Technical Delegate: Ian Douglas (GBR); Course

Designer: Richard Nicoll (USA), Assistant Course Designer: Richard Pringle

(USA). Scorer: Richard Pringle.

Other key personnel: Secretary and Show Manager: Ann Pringle; Announcer:

Geoff Morgan; Radios and Safety Officer: Jon Paul Beauchamp; Volunteers:

Bobbi Hager. Grounds: Newt Brosius, Ron Palmer. Clerk of Dressage: Lisa

Singer; Clerk of Cones: Suzy Stafford; Program: Kelly Soldavin.

Levels: Training, Preliminary, Intermediate, Advanced. Pending approval by the

FEI, the competition will also allow Advanced competitors to use Glen Willow

CDE to qualify horses for international competition.

Board Meeting -Tuesday, May 08, 2012

New Bolton Center

Board Members Attending: Debby Donovan, Tim Canavan, Toots Mahre, Debbie Wolf, Anna Klumpp, Pat

Kozakowski, Debbie Camplone, Teresa Palumbo, Suzy Stafford (via phone). The meeting was called to order at 7:04

PM.

Review of Minutes: Debbie Camplone moved to accept the minutes from the March meeting and was seconded by

Teresa Palumbo.

Treasurer’s Report:

Expenses included newsletter postage, printing, Carriage Museum meeting expenses.

Motion was made to approve the treasurer’s report by Anna Klumpp, seconded by Debbie Wolf.

Insurance Costs are slightly less than last year (due to no Pleasure Carriage Show). Tim Canavan made the motion

to approve Insurance Policy Statement, was seconded by Toots Mahre, unanimously approved.

The Federal Tax forms were to be mailed out this week (Form 990).

Education and Programs Committee:

Anna K. spoke to P.J. Crowley – he is very interested in having another Jr. clinic this year, probably for the fall.

Teresa P. is willing to work with PJ to make that happen.

We will also ask P.J. and Tara if they would be willing to host a general membership (“open house” at

Kendlewood Farm) again this year as this has always been successful in the past.

Anna K. is in process of contacting Jerry Trapani for a CAA talk, possibly in July. Pat Koz offered to host this

activity at her farm.

Newsletter and Website:

The survey that was conducted on line through the website is available in the newsletter. One recommendation

made by Anne Councill was a hazard clinic.

Another was a directory of information about local driving instructors (BVDC members only). It was noted that

instructors within the club perhaps could have a link on the website or an asterisk in the membership directory

indicating that they were available for instruction.

Membership Committee:

Bobbi Hager’s membership report for end of April indicated there were still 59 non-renewals from 2011 which is

disappointing. Anna K. recommended that we try to find out why these members did not renew. Debby D.

suggested we send out e-mails/letters to inquire why in about a month’s time.

The board then reviewed the wording for a proposed change to the Bylaws regarding membership deadline and

dues renewal. The revised wording will be proposed to the general membership at the Holiday Party. The main

change is to the date that any membership dues unpaid will expire after January 31st of that year.

Equipment Committee: Club trailer continues to be stored at Pat K.’s farm in Kirkwood, PA. Any member or

function that needs equipment is responsible for making arrangements pick up and return equipment.

May Meeting Minutes, cont.

Clinic/Special Events Committee:

Suzy Stafford is starting up the cones schooling days for the summer which will be held the second Wednesday in

the months of June, July and August. These will be announced additionally via an e-blast. She is kindly not

charging a fee to the club for these clinics; the participant fee will cover costs and any additional funds will go to

the club.

In addition, Suzy is planning a larger clinic with a well known clinician in possibly July or August. Several venues

are being looked into as well as ADS funding to enable us to keep the cost down for participants.

Pleasure Show/Teddy Bear Picnic Committee:

Teresa P. announced that all is in order for the Continuous Drive to be held at the Riddle’s farm on May 27th. An e-

blast will go out to encourage entries.

It was noted that any additional CD’s were not needed at this time for the calendar year.

The Brandywine Show has a potential organizer for the year 2013. A date in June has been reserved but nothing

pinned down as of yet.

Recreational/Pleasure Drive Committee:

A pleasure drive to be held in Oley, PA hosted by Susan Pannabaker and the Canavan’s on June 23rd. An e-blast

will be forthcoming.

A fun Day at the Hunt Farm in Spring City is being set up by Merrill W. for Aug.25th. Ideas for a theme are

needed. This will be a fun time followed by a BYO picnic lunch.

Old Business:

BVDC support for the Glen Willow CDE was voted and approved for an advertisement in the program (the same

as last year’s Laurels ad).

The trophy case which is located at PJ Crowley’s Farm is completed and trophies are in place. The case is plenty

large enough and the trophys look very nice.

The fundraising idea for posters has been put on hold.

New Business:

The volunteer incentive program is up and running. Not a lot of participation although BVDC logo items are being

made and Pat will have them at various meetings and functions for members to see. The BVDC “bucks” will also

be given out at the time of functions to volunteers by board members or Pat when possible.

It was proposed by Tim C and seconded by Anna K. that PJ and Tara Crowley be given a lifetime membership to

the club. This is due to the fact that they donated the new trophy cases and are housing them as well as the many Jr

clinics and open houses they have held at their farm. Unanimously approved.

A club lending library was proposed by member Darrell Martin and was discussed by the board. Some of the

comments included:

Would we purchase the books or rely completely on donations... If we are going to purchase, there is

some concern about financial implications: some of the CAA books are out of print and as a result are

fairly costly

The Delmarva Driving Club has had a lending library for a while and very few members have made use of

it

CAA members wanting to take the exam will probably want their own copies of books to study.

It may be difficult to get the books returned in a timely manner; the DDC has had this problem - not that

people intentionally keep them, they just don't get around to packaging them up and taking to the post

office or forget to bring to a meeting. Whomever is in charge of the library may spend more time than

expected trying to chase people down to return the books!

We proposed that Darrell come to a board meeting to discuss his idea in more detail so that we might come up

with a plan.

Meeting adjourned at 9:33 PM

Respectfully submitted Pat Kozakowski
