Emerson500,000th Fisher® FIELDVUE® Digital Valve Controller

Fisher FIELDVUE controllers enable users to monitor valve performance online

Emerson Process Management has announced it has surpassed sales of half a million Fisher FIELDVUE digital valve controllers, leading the smart positioner market worldwide. More than two dozen patents have been awarded for this product line to date, and sales of FIELDVUE instruments exceed the total combined sales of several Emerson competitors in this market.

Introduced in 1994, the microprocessor-based FIELDVUE instruments enable users to monitor valve performance online, to collect and trend performance data over time, and to better predict or plan valve maintenance. The innovative FIELDVUE instruments are a key component that powers Emerson Process Management’s PlantWeb® digital plant architecture to proven savings of more than 30 percent of project costs, and greater than 2 percent operations savings, including benefits of predictive valve maintenance.

“FIELDVUE digital valve controllers have changed the way process control industry personnel operate and maintain their equip-ment,” commented Bruce Johnson, vice president of instruments within Emer-son’s Fisher valve division. “FIELDVUE-patented diagnostic capabilities are used to pinpoint performance problems while the valves are controlling, and the plant is run-ning. Users don’t have to service all of their control valves; instead, they can identify and service only the valves that need attention.”

“Improved plant performance results from better control and monitoring, provided through FIELDVUE instruments,” contin-ued Johnson. “The value of FIELDVUE in-struments is reflected in the amount users save on maintenance - avoiding unplanned shutdowns, extending the time between shutdowns, and operating plants at more reliable and productive levels.”

The FIELDVUE instrument line provides a choice of capabilities to meet a variety of end user requirements. Users may select from HART® or FOUNDATION™ fieldbus communication protocols, as well as options that enable partial-stroke valve testing in safety instrumented systems (SIS). Other product enhancements include stainless steel constructions, remote mounting configurations, or extreme temperature options.

MetsoNeles: 50 years of commitment to

customers, reliability and continuous developmentsNeles started life as a supplier to the pulp and paper industries – developing new products in conjunction with the big

Finnish mills. Over time, it expanded internationally and applied its philosophy of continuous development, customer commitment and reliability in other countries and in other industries. Today, most of Neles products are consumed by global customers in the petrochemical, refining, chemical, LNG, oil and gas industries, which are also seen as the largest area of potential growth.

Marketing at Greene Tweed

BVAA’s Marketing Committee continued its tour of members’ facilities with a visit to Greene Tweed’s Nottingham HQ on 4th May 2006 – the first such meeting at an industry supplier’s premises. With many of the committee’s original goals met, the focus has once again shifted to new initiatives to help raise the profile of UK suppliers of valves, actuators and related products.

Koso Kent Introl Delivers Alvheim Valve Package

Koso Kent Introl has recently completed a large package of valves for Vetco Aibel (Norway) for the Alvheim FPSO that is owned and operated by Marathon Oil Company. The full valve package was designed and manufactured at KKI’s UK facility. The scope of supply covered a total of 84 valves (£1.4 Million), these included Control Valves, Butterfly Valves, Severe Service Control Valves and Surface Choke valves. The valves were of various sizes and ratings and the materials of construction ranged from Carbon Steel to Duplex and also Titanium. In addition, all the valves were supplied in accordance with the latest NORSOK standards.

Of special interest was the impact testing that was carried out on one of the 10” Choke Valves. The test was done to ensure that the Choke Valve’s Solid Tungsten Carbide trim does not collapse if hit by solid contaminates within the process medium. An impact object of 2KG mass was dropped in a controlled manner from various heights to provide impact values of 21 Joules, 42 Joules and 63 Joules (Equivalent Velocities equal 4.58, 6.48 & 7.94 m/s respectively). There was considerable resilience during the impacts as the impact object rebounded out of the test body to approximately 1/3 of the drop height. The client witnessed the testing and afterwards the components were examined. On examination the carbide components showed no defects or signs of damage.

Nevertheless, Neles continues to be the No.1 supplier to pulp and paper mills across the world and firmly intends to maintain this position with its smart products and life-cycle approach to customer needs.Major industrial customersThere have been many notable recent successes. For example, some 3,500 Neles control valves and countless positioners, the company’s largest-ever order and worth over EUR 15 million, are currently starting up at the China Shell Petrochemical Complex (a massive joint venture between Shell and the Chinese government) in Nanhai, Guangdong Province. Aracruz in Brazil, the world’s largest producer of eucalyptus pulp, is a major customer for Neles valves and allied products. The company started buying Neles valves in the 1970s and has had a lifecycle agreement with Metso since 1988, which currently covers 40,000 valves There have also been significant projects for BP, Petrobras, UPM, Stora Enso, Saudi Aramco, Veracel and Arauco, to name but a few.Development at every levelSince its inception, Neles has been at the forefront of technology and in recent years has made major strides in the development of both valves and smart positioners to meet the needs of its high-tech global customers in many industries. Customers with new digital products understandably demand valves that can communicate fluently with their particular DCS (Distributed Control System). As a result, Neles now works with major DCS suppliers in order to respond to customers’ requirements for such integration. Many new product developments are currently underway, particularly in the area of valve design, and Neles expects to launch a number of them during 2006.

Secrets of successThe secret of Neles’ success across so many industries lies in total commitment to the current and future needs of the customer; a continuous program of research, design and development; and the ability to provide life cycle care that is backed up by proven reliability as a partner able to match words with deeds.

LARNER-JOHNSON VALVES ENSURE

NEW YORK DOESN’T RUN DRY

Blackhall has just earned itself a place in the history books having won a one million pound order to provide four of the world renowned Larner–Johnson® valves for the city’s huge water system; part of the largest capital construction project in New York’s history.

Construction of a 60 mile tunnel from the Catskills/Delaware Watersheds, began back in 1970, long before managing director James Blackhall of Blackhall Engineering Ltd had begun his long career in valves. The final completion date for the mammoth project is not expected until 2020.

The Company have beaten off fierce competition and spent 3 years working with the city of New York to win the order which will provide just four valves with a total weight of over 80 tonnes. The valves’ flow capacity are capable of filling an Olympic size pool in just five seconds so they should have no problem providing 90% of the city’s drinking water. It is anticipated that 17.5 million people will benefit from the improved quality drinking water that the valves will provide.

Due to be completed by Christmas, the project is the largest taken on by the Brighouse based manufacturer but they remain confident of their abilities. Project Director John Lewthwaite insists they are the only company with the expertise to complete the job. “We’ve been exclusively designing and manufacturing specialist valves since 1965 so we know we can pull off this size of order. We provided two 16 tonne valves to Buloh Dam in Malaysia and a 14 tonne valve to the City of Montreal in Canada. Size is not an issue for us.”Tel: Blackhall on (0)1484 713717

Series 327ASCO/JOUCOMATIC has announced that it has expanded the scope of its Series 327 3/2-way pilot valves to include ¼” and ½” high flow (Kv 1.5) versions. The new valves meet the growing demand for direct acting valves with high reliability and low (<10 Watts cold) power consumption. Based on the principle of a balanced poppet type construction, the new valves have the same outstanding reliability as the popular ¼” basic flow models and are ideal for demanding applications in the chemical, petrochemical and oil and gas industries.

The new, multi-purpose pilot valves are suitable for normally open, normally closed and universal operation, and for the selection or diversion of flow. The valves can also be used for 2/2 way operation by closing one of the ports. Suitable for use with air and inert gas, they feature a brass or stainless steel body, stainless steel internals, and are recommended for pilot applications that require high flow, wide pressure ranges and no minimum operating pressure. Typical applications include the control of single acting, spring return actuators driving all kinds of process valves. The 316 stainless steel construction is resistant to highly corrosive atmospheres

and special low friction seals and guiding rings eliminate sticking and provide exceptional service life. The core movement is guided to ensure optimum alignment and the special low friction seal provides a balanced operation over a wide temperature and pressure range, at minimum power levels. Series 327 solenoid valves satisfy all relevant EC Directives and are suitable for global use in demanding applications where high reliability is essential.

There are no bleed holes or bleed channels which could become blocked by contamination, compromising valve reliability. This makes the Series 327 suitable for critical applications such as Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS). The ¼” version has been successfully tested by TÜV and is suitable for use in safety applications up to SIL-4 with PFD < 4x10-7. This is the highest achievable rating.

The range comprises Basic flow and High flow models rated from 3.6 watts with a high flow (Kv up to 1.5). They are lightweight and their compact, rectangular shape saves panel space. Integral mounting holes make fixing quick and easy. The ¼” basic flow version with NAMUR pad mount body is available in both aluminium and 316 stainless steel for direct installation on pneumatic actuators.

ASCO/JOUCOMATIC can supply a wide range of explosion proof solenoid operators with ATEX approval. Many other approvals are available to meet different standards worldwide including NEMA, UL, CSA, Gost, and NEPSI. International service and support is available through a global network of over 1000 sales offices and distributors.

The installation of a new Rotork Pakscan two-wire digital valve control system at the ChevronTexaco oil terminal in Plymouth sees the completion of a project that has transformed the site from manual to fully automated valve operation.

Winner of the ChevronTexaco Most Admired Terminal Award in 2004, the 5.5 acre Plymouth site stores up to 59 million cubic metres of petrols and distillates which are imported by ship and exported by road tanker, serving Cornwall, Devon and parts of Somerset. Opened originally in 1934, the current tankage was built in 1971 when the site was owned by Shell and BP. Chevron Texaco took over the site completely in 2001.

At that time, Rotork ‘A’ range electric actuators and an early Pakscan control system were installed on the manifold valves that direct the flow of imported fuels to the appropriate storage tanks, but the inlet and outlet valves on all seven of the tanks were manually operated. ChevronTexaco embarked on a programme of modernisation with Rotork’s specialist Site Services Department, utilising redundant ‘A’ range Rotork actuators and valves that had previously been installed at the closed-down Shell West Bromwich terminal. As each tank at Plymouth was taken off-line for routine cleaning, repair and maintenance, actuated valves were installed in series with the existing manually operated valves to enable electrical opening and closing using the actuators’ pushbuttons.

At the same time a new centralised control room was built to house the Fanuc 90/70 PLC system and UCOS SCADA package that now supervises the 24 hours a day, 365 days a year import and export activity at the terminal. To complete the valve automation programme, the tankside actuators are being retrofitted on-site with Rotork Pakscan field cards and linked to a new Pakscan IIE master station in the control room. The actuators are linked to the master station on a single two-wire bus loop, providing a very economical wiring solution for data communication, especially

The IQ actuator on the final interceptor valve

in the large areas associated with tank farms. In addition, the loop configuration enables data to be transmitted in both directions, improving system integrity and immediately identifying the position of any fault or break in the network. The original Pakscan system on the manifold valve actuators has also been incorporated into the upgrade, enabling all valve operating sequences for importing and exporting to be centrally monitored and controlled on the upgraded Pakscan highway. The new master station communicates with the Fanuc PLC to enable automatic supervision, indication and logging of valve operations by the SCADA programme.

Rotork actuators have also been installed in other areas of the site to perform important safety and environmental protection duties. Rotork Skilmatic electro-hydraulic failsafe actuators have replaced obsolete actuators on ESD (emergency shutdown) valves fitted on the product lines between the tanks and export loading bays. Emergency pushbuttons on each loading bay and at other strategic areas in the plant cause these actuators to immediately close and stop the flow of product in the event of any perceived or potential hazard. A Rotork IQ electric actuator has also been installed on the previously manually operated final outfall interceptor valve. Linked to a hydrocarbon sensor in the final interceptor chamber, the actuator will automatically close the valve if any product is detected in the surface water that drains from the site, protecting the sewer and signalling an alarm to the central control room.

ExeecoExeeco wins OHSAS 18001 health and safety award

The prestigious OHSAS 18001 accreditation for health and safety

Achema ‘Success’

A very lively and successful exhibition was hosted by General Manager Martin Sullery, from the Willich valve automation centre of Emerson Process Management, who along with son Matthias and key members of the European internal and external sales team, manned their newly liveried “Valve Automation” stand for this year’s ACHEMA, one of Europe’s biggest exhibitions covering the chemical industry.

Visitors from around the globe were drawn to the stand to witness a full range of services relating to valve automation packaging, including famous brands such as Bettis, El-O-Matic, Hytork and FieldQ, as well as specialist SIS capability relating to all products. A 20% increase in visitor traffic over the 2003 El-O-Matic branded stand, meant that the team were kept fully occupied throughout the week.

Over the five day show, 320 documented visitors to the stand resulted in a multitude of enquiries relating to the global products and service offerings of Valve Automation, including questions on the technical merits of Bettis CBA’s, three-position control of rack and pinion actuators, F-20 positioners and ELQ actuators for a bottling plant application. They even managed to secure a firm order valued at 120k Euros for a project supporting the German valve manufacturer A&R Armaturen.

Customers both new and old were impressed with the wide ranging capability and service offerings from Emerson Valve Automation, knowing that it had the strength and breadth of Emerson Process Management behind it. Having the Emerson over-brand also created additional enquiries relating to other divisional capabilities, such as system analytics, which meant that they recorded a further twenty three opportunities to pass on to other Emerson Divisions.

All in all, they had a great show that emphasized the unique capabilities and scope that Emerson Valve Automation has become famous for, world-wide.

Emerson’s stand at Achema

Emerson Process Management

management has been awarded to Exeeco, the specialist actuation, projects and service company within the Rotork Group.

OHSAS 18001 is the official assessment specification for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, developed in response to the need for companies to meet their health and safety obligations in an efficient manner. Exeeco divisional director Martin Cheetham explains: “This is a prestigious award that further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to health

and safety. The standard covers all the work related activities of Exeeco, Rotork Gears, Rotork Skilmatic and Rotork Fluid Systems performed at our Leeds facilities and at our customers’ premises. Our clients can therefore be assured that we employ best practice in all we do, in line with this internationally recognised standard.”

Assessment to OHSAS 18001 ensures that a company takes effective measures and implements the necessary rigorous controls to ensure that safety and risk issues associated with working activities are accurately identified and managed.

Much of Exeeco’s work involves the modernisation and upgrading of valve actuation and control equipment during the limited timescales imposed by routine outage programmes on customers’ sites. The improved safety levels and risk management inherent in OHSAS 18001 demonstrate a commitment to health and safety issues that is particularly relevant to working in these environments.

Traditional steam traps are welded or screwed into the pipeline, but with Spirax Sarco’s Quickfit system, it’s the STS17 steam trapping station or a pipeline connector that is permanently installed in the pipeline. The trap is fixed to the station or connector by two bolts that allow the trap to be changed in minutes, not hours.

Long Service Recognition for Velan’s Faithful

In today’s working climate many companies have difficulty in holding on to long serving, loyal and quality staff. Velan Valves UK is an exception to that rule and the staff at Velan have recognized four of its long serving workforce, who have a combined service of 120 years! Each of the staff has completed around 30 years for Velan and continue to contribute valuable experience to the UK operation. Bob Morris is Velan’s QA Manager, Vijay Kataria is a skilled welder, Karl Lass is an Area Sales Manager and David Rouse is Velan’s Engineering Manager. Velan’s MD Brian Hall commented at the presentation that “they are a valuable and excellent group of people with whom I have had the privilege of working alongside for many years and I hope that they will be around for many years to come.”It was noted that in addition to this group, Velan have many more long standing and loyal members of staff who likewise will soon be recognized in Velan’s ‘hall of fame.’

New BVAA member, Hobbs Valve Ltd, is a new company formed specifically to bring to market an improved, leak-tight, triple-offset butterfly valve which has had an enthusiastic welcome from engineers and distributors since its launch.

Based in Caerphilly, South Wales, Hobbs Valve has been established by industry professionals with significant knowledge, experience and achievements in the field.

The company’s TVT range of long-life valves, which are made entirely in Britain, include highly innovative, patented designs. Hobbs is progressively becoming established as a supplier of high specification, reliable butterfly valves delivering demand-exceeding performance in a wide variety of applications.

Concentrating initially on 3” to 12” for pressure ratings 150lb and 300lb and with four body-style options, the company will also shortly introduce the TVT range of 14” to 24” valves. Their design requires a simpler manufacturing process, which produces lightweight, compact yet exceedingly robust valves and allows for competitive pricing. Hobbs also promise remarkably short lead times – currently 12-14 weeks.

Hobbs Valve claim to be the first valve manufacturer to obtain BS EN ISO

10497:2004 under the new Lloyds Register approval scheme. As expected the TVT range recorded zero through-seat and external leakage during tests at 15 Bar G > 1000°C.

The company is also accredited to International Quality Standard ISO 9001:2004.

Marketing Director Rhys Jones said “It is our intention to become a leader in the design, manufacture and supply of process valves for use within the oil & gas, chemical, petrochemical and power industries worldwide.” Further information and inquiries via www.hobbsvalve.com

Velan Valves Ltd have provided a reliable, easy to operate and easy to maintain valve for their high pressure high temperature applications. Austin Galley, System Engineer at Heysham commented “As part of our 2002 outage we introduced 25 new Velan Steam Traps and decided to utilize the Velan Power Ball Valve as the trap isolation and bypass isolation valves.” He added, “We replicated this modification on a second unit in 2003 and to date we have no cause to revisit any of the 100 valves now fitted. They have proved to be reliable and easy to operate. The live loaded glands have proved a huge success with not a single nip needed in over 3 years.” He concludes his testimony to Piping Kings by saying “Furthermore and of equal importance the valves were delivered on time and the back up service and technical assistance both pre and post fitting has been superb.”
