St. Croix has a rich West Indian cultural heritage that is prominent throughout the island. Visit these landmarks while shopping and dining in town.

Fort ChristiansvaernFort Christiansvaern was built to protect the colony from the attacks of pirates, hurricanes and slave riots. It was constructed around 1749 and was partially rebuilt in 1771 after it suffered hurricane damages. Although Danish soldiers were stationed here until 1878, the forts cannons and guns have never been fired. After 1878 the fort served as an island courthouse and prison and also for religious services. Today, this fort is now a national historic site, the best preserved of the five remaining Danish-built forts in the Virgin Islands, and houses the park's visitor center. Open on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm.

Fort FrederikstedLike Fort Christiansvaern, Fort Fredriksted was built to protect the island from pirates. It was built between 1752 and 1760 and was the site of the most important event in St. Croix history. 8,000 slaves marched from nearby Estate LaGrange to Fort Fredriksted and demanded their freedom. Standing on the ramparts on July 3, 1848, Governor Von Scholten surrendered to the crowd’s demands. Open on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
