The old King had recently died, leaving the Fairy God-mother in charge of helping the people find their new King.
5
Now, this kingdom was known far and wide for produc-ing incredibly fine woolen cloth that sold for excellent pric-es on the Fairytale Market. The new King would be, there-fore, in charge of an industrious and profitable kingdom, so it would be very important to select the right person who could lead the kingdom to even greater prosperity.
7
The Fairy Godmother called a town meeting to discuss with the people how the new King should be selected.
9
“Well,” said the Fairy Godmother, “How will you select your King?”
“Easy, said the townspeople, “We will choose a King from a group of qualified candidates who will take our kingdom to the next level of organizational health and fi-nancial prosperity.”
11
And so the decree went out to the four corners of the kingdom that all suitably qualified applicants should re-port immediately to the town hall for royal consideration.
13
The very first person to arrive at the town hall was the Crown Prince himself. The only child of the former King, the Crown Prince was a popular and well-known figure-head, but he was notorious for preferring hunting parties and bar maids to a hard day’s work.
15
“My fellow subjects and admirers,” the Prince began, “as my father was King, so should I be. This position is mine by birthright alone.”
17
A murmur arose from the people. “Well, he is the Crown Prince… His father was a wonderful King, so he should be one too!”
“As you wish,” said the Fairy Godmother.
21
Before long, the people came begging the Fairy God-mother for a different new King.
“Please,” they pleaded, “Our beautiful fields are torn apart from the King’s hunting parties, the treasury is near-ly bankrupt from his wild spending, and even our grand-mothers do not feel safe at night! We need a King with more than just a famous last name!”
23
“A wise decision,” said the Fairy Godmother, “A leader must be committed to pleasing his people, not only him-self. He must understand he is but a part of the whole picture, not merely a self-portrait! So, who is your next candidate?”
