IGA OFFERS GREAT VALUE FOR SHOPPERS

A price survey by supermarket comparison site grocerymate.com.au has revealed Supa IGA is cheaper than its larger rivals Coles and Woolworths by 17-21%.

The survey of 29 commonly purchased products shows IGA was cheaper than Coles and Woolworths.

Of the 29 items surveyed IGA prices were lower in all but 6 items at Coles and 8 at Woolworths. The total cost of the 29 items was $176.77 in IGA, $215.01 in Coles and $224.52 in Woolworths - a discount of around 17% - 21%.

The result was not surprising to the team at grocerymate.com.au who have been tracking supermarket prices nationally on a weekly basis.

The team has noticed a trend in recent months for IGA to be as cheap, if not cheaper than the majors, especially when focusing on specials, in particular meat and produce.

In the meat and produce section 11 out of 13 items surveyed were all cheaper at Supa IGA.

Due to the ever changing and fluctuating in store pricing it is important to note that prices need to be watched weekly while taking the total trolley price into consideration.

Grocerymate.com.au compares the price of groceries nation wide, based on your location and product needs.

Win a Years supply of Nerada TeaTwo lucky readers have the chance to win a carton of Australian owned and made teaJust go to www.buyausmag.com.au and sucribeWinners will alerted by email. Competition closes Nov 30 2013.

Vetta launches redeveloped fresh pasta range Vetta is proud to announce the launch of its new Smart PastaTM range.

Vetta’s innovative new Smart PastaTM range features the only pasta on Australian supermarket shelves to provide consumers with high protein / low carb and cholesterol lowering options that look and taste the same as standard white pasta.

Nutritionists and medical practitioners always highlight the importance of a balanced diet. Consuming a higher protein diet has been linked to weight loss since protein helps regulate appetite and cravings by enhancing the feeling of fullness for longer after a meal. There has also been much said about the health benefits of maintaining a healthy cholesterol level, with high levels of bad cholesterol leading to higher risks of heart disease.

Vetta Smart Pasta is available in selected IGA stores.

When you don’t have time for breakfast Slim Nation said distribution of its products will increase to 700,000 units per month within the next six months to China, the Philippines and Mexico.

It also has plans to expand into new nutritional product ranges.

Slim Nation said twenty-nine per cent of Australians skip breakfast three times a week, 22% skip lunch three times a week and 42% of consumers have no time for breakfast.

AUSTRALIAN MADE WELCOMES PRELIMINARY REPORT ON DUMPED IMPORTS

The Australian Made Campaign has welcomed the preliminary report from the Anti-Dumping Commission, which finds in favour of local processors, and recommends that additional tariffs be imposed on processed tomatoes which are found to have been dumped.

Local processor, SPC Ardmona, instigated the inquiry, after it was forced to heavily discount its Australian Grown processed tomatoes in order to compete with the dumped imports, affecting its ability to cover costs.

The final report is expected to be delivered to the Federal Minister for Industry, Ian MacFarlane, early next year.

“We look forward to the final report validating these findings, but the fact remains, there is damage being done

to the local industry, and Australia’s growers, every day until these safeguards are put in place,” Australian Made Chief Executive, Ian Harrison, said.

“Australia needs to be vigilant about the damage that can be done to Australian processors, and in turn Australian growers, given the time it takes to assess such claims.”

“There is a strong argument that the onus of proof should be shifted from the claimant to the importer to prove what is being sold has not been dumped, when a reasonable claim is accepted by the Anti-Dumping Commission,” Mr Harrison said.

The Australian Made Campaign is the not-for-profit organisation

that administers and promotes the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo, Australia’s only registered country-of-origin certification trade mark.

CONTAINER DEPOSIT SCHEME A NEW TAX ON SHOPPERS

PLASTIC BAG BAN SEES BOOM IN BIN-LINER BUYS

Ritchies Supermarkets CEO Fred Harrison has called on the Greens to abandon the push for a Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) calling the program a major tax on the food and beverage industry and an unnecessary impost on consumers.

With 60 supermarkets in Victoria and NSW Mr Harrison said the tax would add millions to the operating costs of his business and inflate grocery prices for his customers.

He said the COAG meeting on December 7 could see the imposition of a drink container tax that could mean shoppers pay up to a 10 cent deposit on every container or bottle they purchase with a hidden cost of 10 cents per container in handling costs.

“It has been estimated the tax will add $300 a year to grocery bills – or $4 per carton of beer – and will not only fail to improve recycling habits but could threaten existing highly successful curbside programs.

“The CDS is an expensive and cumbersome way of recycling our used bottles that will be a tax on all shoppers and make supermarkets tax collectors and collection points for empty containers,” Mr Harrison said.

He said instead of being able to recycle these containers at a curbside collection, retailers would have to wash, store and then take the containers to a recycling depot to have the 10 cent deposit returned.

“Retailers will be caught in a double whammy because we have to collect a tax when people buy our products and then we may have to store the bottles and pay the deposits when the containers are returned.”

“On top of that our customers will have less money to spend on our groceries,” he said.

IGA NEWS

A new report tabled in the South Australian parliament shows that despite overwhelming community support for a plastic bag ban in the State, sales of bin liners have increased by more 80% in South Australia (SA).

According to research from the University of South Australia, the plastic bag ban, which was implemented in South Australia in May 2009, has seen the household purchase of bin liners increase from 15% to 80%.

The study found that the ban on lightweight single-use plastic shopping bags has not stopped households lining their bins, which has led to the increase in the purchase of bin liners.

Meanwhile, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Northern Territory (NT) have also banned plastic bags.

A survey, conducted in October 2013 by Buy Australian Magazine found shoppers are actively looking for Australian products when they shop (75%) and check labels for country of origin. More than half say they chose Australian products over imports when they could find a suitable product.

Shoppers also feel cheaper imported products should not replace Australian-made products on supermarket shelves. Australia has one of the most concentrated grocery markets in the world. Woolworths and Wesfarmers (owner of Coles) account for almost 80% of supermarket sales, 60% of alcohol retail, 50% of petrol retail and 40% of all retail in Australia.

Price war hasn’t translated into cheaper groceries Despite being bombarded by daily claims of price cuts by the major chains only 10% of shoppers claim to have seen a reduction in their food bill while 90% of shoppers have either not seen a reduction in their weekly shopping costs or haven’t noticed any change.

In fact the majority of shoppers believe the price war has been bad for consumers (60%) and terrible for Australian Made products (90%).

Who is buying generics?

Despite the chains claiming 30% of all shopping is now home brand or generic products surveyed shoppers believe the price war has come at cost of choice (80%) in the supermarket aisles and are very unhappy with the outcome. In fact the shoppers appear to actively reject home brand labels with 28% refusing to buy no name brands and almost 40% buying just a “couple” of items each shop. Barely 10% of shoppers bought more than half of their groceries as home brand products.

Australian Made number one

What shoppers do value most is Austrailan Made products (75%) followed by Variety (47%), Recognised Brands (33%) and Low Prices (42%) with enticers such as fuel discounts (3.3%) and loyalty cards (1.6%) at the bottom of the pile along with an aversion for home brand products (2.5%).

No to foreign ownership More than 96% of shoppers believe Australian land and food production should not be sold to foreign buyers and most believe the Federal Government should support Australian manufacturing.

Shoppers want more choice IGA is the brand perceived to have the most diverse range of products followed by Woolworths, Coles and Aldi. The focus on Sustainability (2%) and Eco Friendly (3.3%) products does not appear to translate as important to shoppers who value Austrailan Made (52%) and Quality (25%) the highest with price languishing as important for less than 20% of shoppers.

Private Labels Supermarket owned brands (known as ‘private label’ or generic ‘house brands’) command a 25% market share, expected to rise to 30% in the near future.

‘House brands’ mean big profits for supermarkets and are geared towards customer loyalty by creating products that can only be purchased in their store.

Home brands lead to less competition Most shoppers also believe that the home brand market has gone too far and has come at the expense of Australian manufacturing and are not happy about the swing to less choice and less competition in the market place.

In fact 73% of shoppers believe the trend to home brand labels has gone too far and 78% of shoppers believe supermarkets are deliberately restricting their choices resulting in less competition in the market place than 10 years ago.

RESEARCH

Government should restrict Coles and Woolworths Shoppers also believe the Abbott Government is not supportive of Australia Made businesses, should restrict the growth of Coles and Woolworths in supermarket and liquor retailing and should ban them from entering the pharmacy market .

Consumers also believe the ACCC is not protecting their interests and only looks after “big business”.

Show off some true Aussie flair this Christmas It’s easy to give the Christmas Classics a fresh, healthy and fab flavour twist this year with some fantastic ideas that fit so beautifully with our hot summer weather.

Here’s a fresh and light way to enjoy a superb Christmas lunch in our (sometimes) searing summer heat on that most special day of the whole year. With some simple preparation the day before, and a handful of my Tuckeroo native inspired products, your family can enjoy a memorable meal that perfectly suits our Aussie Christmas weather, that’s light on the preparation and truly suits our hot summer climate.

Start with Crusty Breads with really good Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Tuckeroo Bush Tomato Balsamic. On the day, simply crisp up your gourmet whole breads (baguettes or sour dough are perfect) in a 170° C oven for about 10-15 mins. Add some “Wild” Dips and Antipasto platters, there are some great options to choose from which will bring home some amazing outback flavours to your Christmas table:

Along with the crusty breads, natural accompaniments are the Tuckeroo Crackers:

- Pepperleaf Parmesan Lavosh

- Pepperberry Oatmeal Cookies

For your sensational seafood platters, an awesome combination is fresh summery Mangos, creamy textured Avocados and my Tuckeroo Lemon Aspen Coconut Dressing. Simply cut juicy mango cheeks into small dice and cover with the dressing to make a stunning refreshing tropical salsa. Add fresh chilli if you

like it spicy. Then your family & guests can spoon it over the chilled seafood as they eat! Here’s an idea of what you’ll need, the variety and quantities are really up to you and your budget:

- 2-3 ripe mangoes - 2-3 avocadoes - 1 bottle Tuckeroo Lemon Aspen Coconut Dressing - 2-3 oysters each - 2-3 prawns each - 1-2 yabbies each - ¼ blue swimmer crab each - Fresh cooked crayfish - Pickled mussels - Smoked Salmon

Watch the eyes light up when you lay out these simple and so tasty platters for your first course. Don’t forget lots of napkins & finger bowls to wash those messy “seafood” hands.

The recipe for this salad to accompany the turkey is available at www.buyausmag.com.au

Ingredients

1.5-2kg of Turkey Breast roll – skin on

Sea salt & Tuckeroo groundpepperleaf

Olive oil

Ingredients

2 x 30g Tuckeroo Dried Quandongs

300g/ml orange juice

3 x 2g leaves gelatine (softened in iced water)

500g raspberries

150g strawberries

125g blueberries

150g blackberries or mulberries

300g sugar

ROAST TURKEY WITH SALTBUSH DUKKAH CRUST CHILLED ROAST VEGETABLE SALAD

QUANDONG BERRY SUMMER PUDDING

THE MOROCCAN STYLE ROAST VEGETABLE SALAD

Serves approx. 8

This slow roast method takes a relaxing 2-3 hours so start well ahead of the meal time

Serves 8-12 – made the day before

Method

1. Pre-heat your oven to 230° C.

2. Season the meat all over and rub the skin with olive oil.

3. Roast in the hot oven for 25-30 mins. Next turn the heat down to a very slow 80° C to allow the meat to “rest” for 1 ½ hours as it slowly cooks as well. This method produces amazingly moist and tender meat.

4. Remove the warm meat and allow to stand for 10 mins. Set the oven back to approx. 200° C.

Method

1. In a large saucepan, bring the juice and quandongs briefly to the boil, cover and allow to soften fully. Remove 10-15 pieces of fruit for garnishing later. Also reserve a small selection of perfect berries to garnish the pudding later

2. Add remaining berries, sugar, softened gelatine and water to the pan with the quandong, and bring briefly to the boil, stirring once. Pour the fruit through a colander over a bowl to catch the juices. Allow to cool a little.

3. Line the pudding bowl with cling wrap, and then cut all the crusts from the square bread slices. Trim 1 slice into a circle for the centre of the bowl, and then cut the remaining slices in half at a diagonal, to produce equal “wedge shaped” halves. Arrange these around the edge of the bowl, ensuring they overlap the centre circle, and each other, by 1-2cm. (this adds a little strength to the pudding walls). When complete, pour in the drained fruit filling, and a little of the juice to moisten the bread, and finally cover the top (which will become the base) completely with more bread slices. Cover with plastic, and add a plate or other item like a saucepan that fits the size of the pudding base perfectly. Place in the fridge and weigh down with heavy objects like cans of food etc. Chill overnight.

4. Next day, invert the pudding onto a serving platter, pour over the reserved sauce and garnish with the reserved berries and quandongs. Top with some crème fraiche, or whipped cream

5. (If the sauce has set in a light jelly, simply warm very gently before serving).

5. Remove the string or netting and reserve the pan juices. Now it’s a good idea to use one or two bamboo skewers to secure the meat & skin from opening out during the last cooking process.

6. Brush the skin all over with the mustard, and sprinkle generously with the dukkah to “crumb” nicely. A large roast may need more than 60g of dukkah. Now you are ready to quickly roast for 10 mins to crisp up the spices, and you are ready to serve.

2 dsp Dijon mustard

1 x 60g Tuckeroo SaltbushDukkah

Foil

Bamboo skewers

150g water

(some frozen berries can be used, but using more fresh will result in a better pudding)

300mm approx. diameter pudding bowl

Cling wrap

½ loaf sliced white sandwich bread

Ingredients

1.8 - 2.0 kg/ Pork Loin or Tenderloin, diced and cubed (small)

2-3 Habanero Chillies, seeded and finely sliced

3 Chipotle Chillies, kept whole, no need to reconstitute them

2 Bay Leaves

2 Medium Onions, finely chopped

6 Cloves Garlic, Minced

1 can Diced Tomatoes

1 standard Bottle of Beer

MEXICAN PORK CHILI

Method

1. Combine the Flour, Cornmeal, Chili Powder, Salt and Pepper

2. Place this mixture in a large plastic bag, add to the bag the Pork pieces. Close the open end of the bag and toss and tumble the meat around until well coated with the Flour mixture

3. Meanwhile heat the oil in a heavy based saucepan or frying pan and flash fry the seasoned Pork pieces in batches until slightly browned, set aside to rest

4. Add to the same saucepan the Onions, Fresh Chili, Scallions and Garlic. Saute gently until tender

5. Transfer the Pork to a large Pot, add the onion mixture and all remaining dry ingredients (except the Cilantro). Give it a good stir with a wooden spoon

Serves 6 - 8

1 standard Bottle of Apple or Pear Cider

1 Tbsp Chili Powder

3 Tbsp Salt

1 Tbsp Dried Oregano

1 Tbsp Sweet Paprika

1 Tbsp Sugar

1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder

3 Tbsp Flour

6 Tbsp Mexican Cornmeal

4 Tbsp Vegetable Oil

2 Tbsp Vinegar

Quarter Tbsp Ground Black Pepper

Half Tbsp Cayenne Pepper

Half cup Scallions (spring Onions),finely chopped

Half Cup Strong Black Coffee

Cilantro Leaves for Garnish

Can of Red Kidney Beans(optional)

6. Lastly add the Tomatoes and Liquids, bring to the simmer, partially cover and allow it to simmer away (on low heat) for 2 hours - add additional water if the Pork Chili threatens to become too dry

7. After the first 2 hours of simmering, check the seasonings and allow the chili to cook further (uncovered) to reduce it to the required consistency

8. Once the desired consitency is reached you can choose to serve it, but I prefer to place it in the fridge overnight. This allows the flavors to really develop and settle down. Any solidified fat is then removed. The Beans are then added to the Chili, heated through again and served with the Cilantro garnish and Corn Tortillas on the side

Supermarket products: Important drawcards for Australian shoppers, Roy Morgan Supermarket shoppers in Australia are more concerned about food safety than the proximity of a store to their homes, good value, trading hours or the quality and range of fresh fruits and vegetables, according to findings from market research organisation Roy Morgan Research.

Over half (57%) of grocery buyers aged over 14 years cited food safety standards as a very important factor when deciding where to shop, followed by whether the store was near to home or good value (both 55%).

Hygienically prepared food and a clean and tidy environment were each very important to 53% of shoppers. The quality of fresh produce ranked alongside convenient trading hours and low prices at 52%, but more shoppers placed high importance on easy parking (51%) than the range of fresh fruit and vegetables (47%).

HEALTHY LIVING

Honey Health Benefits A Tasmanian scientist is testing the state’s unique leatherwood honey for medicinal benefits that could increase its value by millions of dollars a year.

Leatherwood honey has already been proven to be high in antioxidants.

Testing is now being done in Hobart on the antibacterial hydrogen peroxide which is produced when leatherwood is diluted.

Researcher Charles Dragar says the honey could be used like manuka to heal wounds and boost the immune system.

“The presence of activity in the leatherwood is not in question but there is certainly the question of shelf life and how long that activity is present as the honey is being stored on the shelf, or by the producers,” he said.

Australians adding new vegetables to diet, study Almost two thirds of Australian shoppers have added new vegetables to their cooking repertoire in the last five years, according to new research from AusVeg, horticulture body representing Australian vegetable and potato growers.

The study, of 1,400 consumers found over 60% of consumers have added new vegetables to their weekly meals, with sweet potato, broccoli and bok choy the main new types.

AusVeg said that the research found 8% of respondents had added broccoli to their cooking as that Chinese cuisines became almost as popular as Australian-style meals.
