Worldwide Windows Client Operating Environments 2008–2012 Forecast:

Windows Vista Momentum Picks Up Steam

By Al Gillen

“Forrester expects at least one-third of enterprises to begin to deploy Windows Vista enterprise

wide by mid-2008 as more applications will be certified, hardware will be refreshed and ready to

run Windows Vista smoothly, and price points will make compatible machines more affordable

than they are today.”

“Organizations' Windows Vista deployment plans generally are running late. With many Vista deployments

set to begin in late 2008 or early 2009, and with Microsoft discussing the next release for late 2009,

pressure will mount to skip Windows Vista entirely. We believe this is a risky proposition.”

November 12, 2007How Windows Vista Will Shake Up The State Of The Enterprise Operating SystemWide-Scale Enterprise Deployments Of Windows Vista Will Start In Mid-2008by Benjamin Gray

Looking forward, we expect that 2008 will mark the beginning of a much stronger adoption

curve for Windows Vista on the business side, especially now that Windows Server 2008 has

launched.“

Windows Vista’s feature/function improvements should make ongoing operations easier. We’re not going to run through the list of security, reliability, and user experience improvements that Windows Vista actually delivers on, but suffice it to say that the returns from early adopters have been impressive. (see endnote 5) Customers have raved about being able to standardize their users on the standard

ENDNOTES1. Nearly half of the enterprises we surveyed have concrete plans to deploy Windows Vista. By the end of this year, 7% of enterprises will start their deployments. By the end of 2008, 32% will begin, and an additional 17% will start to deploy the OS in 2009 or beyond. But it’s not a huge surprise that just over half the enterprises we surveyed

Intel® vPro™ Technology* Based PCs with Windows Vista™

Benefits for IT

Reduce PC Crashes

Most PC crashes are due to problems with graphics. Intel integrated graphics +

Windows Vista provide a more reliable graphics experience.

Trust Confidential Information is Protected

If a PC is stolen, Intel’s integrated chipset support for TPM 1.21 helps prevent unauthorized users

from accessing confidential information on the hard drive

Guard Against Worms & Viruses

PCs with Intel vPro technology feature Execute Disable Bit3, designed to prevent certain classes of

viruses or worms that exploit “buffer overflow” vulnerabilities.

Deploy with Confidence

The Intel Stable Image Platform Program2 provides hardware driver stability allowing IT to minimize

need for a forced gold software change for at least 15 months.

1 3rd party discrete card vendors provide TPM 1.2 chip

2 Check with your PC vendor for availability of platforms that meet Intel® Stable Image Platform Program (SIPP) guidelines.

3 Enabling Execute Disable Bit functionality requires a PC with a processor with Execute Disable Bit capability and a supporting operating

system. Check with your PC manufacturer on whether your system delivers Execute Disable Bit functionality.

Reduce Costs Through Lower Power ConsumptionEnhanced Intel Speedstep® Technology can create power savings by enabling the processor to scale up or down depending on performance needs.

So What About Windows 7?

Should we wait for Windows 7?

• Customers are not going to be ready to deploy Windows 7 the day it ships.

• We expect to see them evaluating and testing Windows 7 somewhere from 18 -

36 months after it’s released

• Windows 7 is planned to be released about 3 years after Windows Vista

• The total period customers likely will be waiting prior broadly deploying

Windows 7, will be in the range of 5 - 7 years after Windows Vista release.

• This may put customers into a situation where their ISV vendors may no longer

support certain applications on Windows XP

“Skipping versions of Windows entirely, generally increases

the risk of having unsupported applications running on

selected operating systems”, hence their recommendation

is “Don’t skip Windows Vista entirely”. (Gartner)
