We are in the midst of Summer 2016. The

temperatures are already reminding us that it

is a “hot” July! June was another busy month

for the DeLand Area Chamber and Orange

City Alliance. Many enjoyed the Watermelon

Festival at the Volusia County Fairgrounds or

other fun events in the area. It is the time of

year when local farming is at the peak of the

season. There is no better source of fresh fruits

and vegetables than what is grown locally. So

buy local and buy often!

In the interest of businesses, the “West

Volusia Means Business luncheon last

month at the Historic Grant Bly House was

well attended. Jacob Stuart, President of

the Orlando Chamber was inspiring and

informative. Mr. Stuart provided many

useful nuggets and take-a-ways to put to use

for enhancing local businesses.

Business After Hours is every third Thursday and Total Vision sponsored and hosted clients and the business community on June 16. Attendees enjoyed an evening of networking, delicious food and drinks.

Remember that networking is essential for establishing business to business relationships. Bring plenty of business cards and take advantage of the many networking opportunities available to you. FUEL meets every Monday morning and Let’s Do Lunch is every Tuesday. In closing, be mindful of this year’s theme “West Volusia is the place and 2016 is the time to grow and do more.” Keep the event calendar bookmarked to avoid missing out on any of the upcoming events that your Chamber is busy planning.

Keep in mind that this is “your” Chamber

and we welcome your feedback and we are

here for you. Locations at: Orange City at the

Launch Federal Credit Union and in DeLand

on the 2nd floor of the City Hall building.

Remember that the Chamber is “your”

resource for assisting your business to grow

and be more successful.

The suggested change is part of President Obama’s goal to modernize the way we handle compensation — ensuring that workers receive a “fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.” Surprisingly, the overtime threshold for salaried employees has only been changed once since 1975, when the initial exemption level was set at $250 a week.

But according to national data, certain types of businesses are more likely to have employees who work overtime than others. Employees in the food industry are 36% percent more likely to work overtime than the average business. Professional services (consulting, real estate, design, child care, and photography) and the health and beauty industries tend to have employees that stick to regular work hours. Those industries are 31% percent less likely to have employees who work overtime.

Regardless of which sector your business is in, you should ensure you’re tracking overtime according to the regulations in your state and industry. It’s also a good time to consider reviewing whatever point of sale system you have in place to keep track of employee overtime.

Change in Overtime Pay Means MORE EXPENSES

to SMALL BUSINESSYou probably rely on your employees for quite a bit. But sometimes, there’s just not enough time in the day to get everything done. That’s why overtime pay is common for a lot of businesses — especially those that are expanding.

But if you have employees that work more than 40 hours in a week, there’s a new rule you’ll want to pay attention to. The U.S. Department of Labor updated the overtime regulations that determine who qualifies for overtime pay. The ruling, which goes into effect in December of this year, more than doubles the salary threshold that determines overtime eligibility, from $455 a week ($23,660 annually) to $913 a week ($47,476). The Labor Department calculates that 4.2 million workers will become newly eligible for overtime.

Leadership West Volusia Program Graduates

Its Thirty-Second ClassAbout The Program: Leadership West Volusia draws together business and community leaders from diverse backgrounds and experiences to learn about challenging community issues while enhancing their leadership skills. The program is directed toward area adults of who have demonstrated leadership potential and interest in servicing their community, participants learn about their county and how they might become a more engaged citizen.

The goal of Leadership West Volusia is to develop people who will provide ongoing leadership in the community. The program provides opportunities for potential leaders to meet with today’s leaders to gain a better understanding of issues and challenges facing our community. It will also provide educational opportunities to strengthen the leadership and communication skills of participants. Leadership West Volusia is not an action or advocate group; rather, it is a program designed to help the community meet the challenges of the future by assuring well-trained and knowledgeable citizen leaders.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING…

“This is a fundamental issue of fairness. While new taxes should be off the table, especially in times of a recession, the Internet sales tax is already Florida law. Florida retailers are being kept at a competitive disadvantage when we do not enforce collection of this tax.”

– David Hart, Executive Vice President, Florida Chamber of Commerce

The DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce and Orange City Alliance’s Education Committee held its annual Crystal Apple Award Luncheon on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center in DeLand.

The Crystal Apple Award is an event set up to recognize the outstanding efforts of the Teachers and Educators in the West Volusia County area. Each participating School submits a nominee based on their nominee’s impact on the School’s culture, the nominee’s community involvement, in and out of the classroom, and on how the nominee prepares their students for the next level of education. From that nominee pool, four Crystal Apple Award Winners are selected.

“For 2016 there were 28 nominations submitted for consideration by West Volusia School’s,” says Eric Nompleggi, Chairman of the Crystal Apple Committee. “I’m so delighted with both the number and quality of nominees this year; it was an honor to be part of recognizing their accomplishments.”

The four winners of the 2016 Crystal Apple Award are Tim Robinson – Sunrise Elementary, Susie LeFils – Forest Lake Elementary, Kimberly Martin – St Barnabas Episcopal and Katie Amarl – Pierson Elementary.
