Part 2Apprenticeships andWork-based Qualifications

Page 30: Business Solutions

ApprenticeshipsApprenticeships are work-based training programmes that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. They are designed around the needs of employers, so you are able to employ people who can make a measurable contribution to your business performance; they gain more skills, competence, job satisfaction and promotion opportunities. It’s a ‘win-win’ all round and more than 85,000 small, medium and large organisations agree.

Facts in numbers* ɖ 80% of those employers who employ apprentices agree

they make their workplace more productive ɖ 81% of consumers prefer using a company which takes on

apprentices (and you are given a certificate and employer badge to use on your stationery and marketing materials that highlights your commitment to apprenticeships)

ɖ there are more than 85,000 employers offering apprenticeships in more than 130,000 locations

ɖ 88% of employers who employ apprentices believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce

ɖ 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future

*National Apprenticeship Service

Business BenefitsOrganisations participating in apprenticeship programmes experience many business benefits, which can include:

ɖ a more productive and competitive workplace ɖ improved quality of work ɖ demonstration of your commitment to staff development ɖ increased employee satisfaction ɖ higher staff retention ɖ stronger career progression ɖ more diverse workforce ɖ supporting the local economy

How do apprenticeships work?An apprenticeship consists of a number of qualifications which make up an apprenticeship framework, combining both on and off-the-job training.

It includes: ɖ a knowledge-based element ɖ a module on employment rights and responsibilities ɖ ‘transferable’ or functional skills in maths and English ɖ a competence-based element

On-the-job, an apprentice will work alongside your experienced staff to gain job-specific skills and they will be working towards the competence-based qualification. This will provide you with an immediate beneficial impact to your business.

Off-the-job, apprentices spend time studying at Warwickshire College, typically on a day release basis and will be working towards the knowledge-based technical qualification such as a BTEC or C&G Diploma. The amount of time spent studying varies depending on the sector.

There are more than 200 different apprenticeship frameworks available across 80 different industry sectors, so Warwickshire College will help you to establish the right solution for an apprentice in your organisation.

Whether you wish to develop one of your current employees or take on new employees as apprentices, we’ll be with you all the way, supporting you from start to finish.

Funding Apprenticeship funding is available from the National Apprenticeship Service. The size of the contribution varies depending on your sector and the age of the candidate. If the apprentice is aged 16 to 18 years old, you will receive 100 per cent of the cost of the training; if they are 19 to 24 years old, you will receive up to 50 per cent; if they are 25 years old or over you may get a contribution depending on the sector and area in which you operate.

How Warwickshire College will help youWe can work with you to:

ɖ identify and recruit suitable junior employees to apprenticeship level opportunities

ɖ identify existing employees who may benefit from training ɖ plan and design training courses to meet your needs and

those of the individual ɖ provide off-the-job training to support learning in the

workplace ɖ monitor apprentice programmes and provide help and

support where necessary ɖ assess apprentice competence in the workplace ɖ work as your link with the National Apprenticeship Service ɖ work with the national awarding bodies, such as C&G, to

award nationally recognised qualifications to apprentices ɖ provide on-going support and training to you and your staff

in all aspects of work-based learning ɖ advise on work-based qualifications for all staff, not only

those eligible for apprenticeships, through the college’s team of subject specialists

ɖ provide a dedicated account manager to keep you up-to-date on all the progress of the apprenticeship at each stage

£1500 grant to recruit an apprentice

Small and medium-sized companies who have been thinking about taking on an apprentice – perhaps for the first time – have until 31 December 2014 to apply for a government grant.

The Apprenticeship Grants for Employers are available to SMEs with fewer than 250 employees. Worth £1,500 the wage grants will help eligible employers offer people aged between 16 and 24 an apprenticeship.

Companies can apply for funding for up to ten new apprentices, but they must be able to prove that they would not have taken on the apprentice without the additional incentive and that they have not taken on an apprentice in the past three years.

Work-based QualificationsVocational Qualifications are competence-based, meaning staff learn practical, work-related tasks designed to help them develop the skills and knowledge to do a job effectively. Qualifications are based on national standards, which say what a competent person in a job could be expected to do. As an employee progresses through the course, they compare their skills and knowledge with these standards so that they can see what they need to do to meet them.

Qualifications are related to a particular industry or sector and they can be studied at work, at college or as part of an apprenticeship. As an employer, you get the benefits of a better trained, more productive, highly motivated workforce without disruption to your business.

Qualifications are available at levels 1 to 4 in a wide range of subjects including:

There are also industry-specific qualifications including agriculture, horticulture, countryside, early years, health and social care, dental nursing, hairdressing, beauty, equine, animal welfare, veterinary nursing, construction, engineering, sport, leisure and many more.

New Qualifications for Assessors and Internal VerifiersIf you employ assessors or internal verifiers, you should be aware that the old ‘A’ (assessor) and ‘V’ (verifier) qualifications have been succeeded by a new series of Assessment and Quality Assurer qualifications. To maintain currency of practice, all assessors and verifiers must update their current qualifications by gaining the new award Unit 1 – ‘Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment’ or by attending relevant CPD update training.

ConsultancyWe see things differently to other training providers. Not only do we deliver a selection of scheduled open courses ranging from accredited management programmes to soft skills and one-day courses such as ‘improving your cash flow’, but we can help you with tailor made solutions designed to support your specific business needs.

Our business professionals have been trained to the very highest level. They will appraise your organisation with you, using our Employer Responsiveness Framework to draw out your objectives and your short, medium and long-term needs. We help you to establish where you want to be in terms of staff performance and business outcomes.

Once we have the full picture, we will devise a programme that is directly linked to your overall business performance, analysing the gaps you need to fill. We focus only on what your staff need to know to improve their performance and return your investment in them.

So, whether you are a small business or a large PLC, talk to us about getting your return on learning investment.

We will:

Why choose Warwickshire College? Our employer services team has the knowledge and in-depth skills to help get your business on the right course at the right level to meet the needs of your business.

We will work with you to design a bespoke training plan which ensures you get the training your business needs.

We are also the first college in the country to have staff trained by experts at the ROI Institute, so we know how to evaluate the financial return from learning and development programmes.

We extract meaningful data from learning interventions and use a range of techniques to isolate the effects of the training from other organisational and environmental influences. The process can make an important contribution to your strategy and it also identifies the return on investment on any training you have undertaken.

We work regionally and nationally with all types of private, public and third sector organisations, whatever their size or market area.
