Editorial

By Gerry D. Constantino

Everything is getting smarter nowadays - from smart phones to smart TVs; from smart cars to smart homes; and from smart

cards to smart grids. ECCP likewise launched a few smart programs namely: the Energy Smart Program and the SMART Cebu project.

The Energy Smart Program was launched for companies to take notice of the fact that they can enhance their competitiveness through energy efficiency. The program is reminding companies that there are many opportunities to be smart in the area of energy management. To improve their bottom-line, many companies are blindsided by their over-focus on selling more or finding new markets in order to increase revenue. Many companies are forgetting that there is a gold mine inside their own companies. The gold mine is energy savings. As one Energy Smart advocate said, you can practically find stacks of cash lying around your facilities by just looking closely at how efficiently you operate your company.

Implementing an energy efficiency program within a company can generate savings up to 30%. A manufacturing plant with a monthly electric bill of 1 million pesos can generate up to 300,000 pesos savings or 3.6 million pesos a year if it will seriously consider adopting energy saving measures on lighting, air-conditioning, motors and pumps, among others. One company, Pilipinas Shell, even used this formula

as a way of multiplying their donation to a charity organization.

Pilipinas Shell donated 500,000 pesos worth of energy efficient lighting systems to Hospicio de San Jose (orphanage) which then generated energy savings worth 100,000 pesos per month. In five months, the initial donation of 500,000 pesos was recovered and on the sixth month onward, Shell practically kept on adding 100,000 pesos a month to their initial donation. I can only say that was indeed a smart CSR strategy that became a growing contribution to the orphanage.

ECCP is now working with PEZA to implement a PEZA Energy Savings Program (PESP) that will encourage zone locators to seriously consider implementing their own energy efficiency program. If locators can be convinced, not only will they enjoy lower energy costs but PEZA together with the locators can even brag that the Philippines has economic zones which can now be labelled low carbon economic zones. I think that this is a branding that will differentiate our zones from the rest.

SMART Cebu is an EU Switch Asia pilot project that we launched in Cebu to promote a new mind-set in the business development of 3 design oriented industries – furniture, fashion accessories, gifts/housewares – towards sustainable consumption and production. The project promotes resource efficiency (which

includes energy, water, chemicals, raw materials, etc.) as well as cleaner production (or processes that generate less waste). The project also encouraged companies to use more sustainable materials, apply eco-design principles as well as consider the cradle-to-cradle approach to producing and disposing products based on a life cycle model. These smart strategies coupled with excellent design lead to more savings, better products, lower carbon emissions, and enhanced competitiveness in the global market.

Global buyers are now demanding their suppliers to implement sustainability measures if they can remain part of their supply chain. The common goal is to lower the carbon footprint of the supply chain. For example, IKEA in its Sustainability Direction 2015 advised its suppliers that it would like to offer products that are more sustainable. Preferred products are those that use less materials, renewable materials and recycled materials, that demonstrate transport efficiency (more products in one container), energy efficiency (lower energy cost per unit), among others. If companies want to supply IKEA, then these are the characteristics of the products that IKEA is willing to buy.

The world is gradually switching to a lifestyle of sustainability and the markets are following the sustainability direction. Staying competitive in the global market can only mean getting smart in the way we do things.

GET SMART

Like a beam of LED light reaching out farther as it becomes more powerful, the 3rd Philippine Energy Efficiency Forum (PEEF) this July ranged wider and partnered with more companies, financial institu-

tions and government agencies to attain the common aim of institutional-izing the practice of energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency or using less energy remains the cheapest form of power available to business firms. It also serves as the foundation of a grand design crafted by the government and the private sector to increase the Philippines’ use of renewable or sustainable energy as a hedge against future power crises.

The expanded breadth of the energy efficiency campaign was reflected in thethemeofthe3rdPEEF:“DrivingEfficiencyandCompetitivenessAcrossthe Power Sector Value Chain.”

PEEF’s major goal over the past three years has been to promote the national effort towards energy supply security, increased competitiveness and low carbon economic growth through energy efficiency.

Unlike its predecessors, however, the 3rd PEEF focused on energy efficiency from the perspective of business firms (who are huge energy users) along the energy value chain, from generation through transmission and distribution

to the plug. New to this year’s PEEF were the separate Technical Briefings where sponsors, energy technology companies and exhibitors presented their unique energy efficiency solutions. The new business matching sessions were a success, as was the widely visited product exhibition.

As noted by Hubert d’Aboville, President of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) in his welcoming remarks, the forum reaffirms thatenergyefficiencyhas thepotential for“. . .hugesavings intotal power use and large reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.”

“The return on investment fromenergy efficiencywill benefit thewholecountry,” he said.

He added that the private sector and the government are able to do more and operate more efficiently with limited resources through energy efficiency.

d’Aboville acknowledged the firms and institutions that have partnered with ECCP in promoting PEEF since the start of the chamber’s energy efficiency campaign three years ago.

PEEF is the first forum in the Philippines that focuses exclusively on energy efficiency. It supports the Energy Smart Program that aims to encourage

Your Boarding Pass to a European Christmas

For the first time in Asia, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) will be organizing the Christkindlmarket in Manila. From December 3-9, 2012, the SM Mall of Asia Ice Skating

Rink will be transformed into a Christmas village to replicate the original event.

Every year, almost 2 million people from all over the world visit the Christkindlmarket in Nuremberg, Germany where this tradition of celebrating Christmas first started in 1545. Visitors can buy Christmas items such as pastries, Holiday meats, Gluhwein, sweets, Christmas decorations, candles, and other holiday items from various stalls. While browsing through unique finds, families and friends can enjoy whimsical performances from choirs and bands.

Through Christkindlmarket Manila, the ECCP aims to promote awareness and interest among Filipinos on European traditions and goods by giving them a chance to experience this European Christmas event in the Philippines.
