Foreword
Prof. Gautam KallooVice Chancellor
As a matter of fact the Indian subcontinent has been recognized as treasure house of valuable
medicinal plant. There is a vast scope as well as unparalleled opportunities for Medicinal Plant
Based entrepreneurship development. Time has come to identity, domesticate and sustainable
utilize the valuable herbs before they are extinct from natural habitats. Recently medicinal plants
in India enjoy considerable reputation as drugs and are being used in different systems of
medicine. There are many agencies in the country which are being promoting cultivation,
conservation, processing and value-addition of medicinal plants.
The National Medicinal Plant Board (NMPB), New Delhi, a national level body has the primary
mandate of supporting programs related to Medicinal Plants R & D. Similarly Indian Council of
Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi has also promoted this important sector through various
schemes. Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidhyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur is a prime institute
having project support from NMPB and ICAR both and has achieved a landmark in the field of
medicinal plants Research and Development. The Business Planning and Development Unit
established at JNKVV, Jabalpur has also one of the mandate to promote business of medicinal
plants based small scale entrepreneurs. I am happy that this unit is excellently doing this job by
advocating technologies innovated at JNKVV, Jabalpur.

The rural folks and tribals in India even now depend largely on the surrounding plants/forests for theirday to day needs. Medicinal plants are being looked upon not only as a source of health care but alsoas a source of income. The value of medicinal plants related trade in India is of the order of 5.5 billionUS dollar and is further increasing day-by-day. The international market of herbal products is estimatedto be US $ 62 billion. India share in the global market of medicinal plants trade is less than 0.5%. In viewof the innate Indian strengths, which include diverse eco-systems for growth of medicinal plants,technical/farming capacity, strong manufacturing sector, the medicinal plants sector can provide ahuge export opportunity after fulfilling domestic needs.
Keeping in view the Business Planning and Development Unit of JNKVV, Jabalpur has developed andestablished technologies of herbal products that has great potential of agribusiness.
Production of single component value added product and multiple component value added product ofmedicinal plants have been developed by the Department of Plant Physiology, JNKVV, Jabalpur, whichprovides pure and fresh material to guarantee the highest possible level of human health and to securethe availability of medicinal products to citizens across the country. We select each and everyingredient for their individual properties to create the best product based on principles of Ayurveda.
This publication is prepared by the Business Planning and Development Unit, JNKVV where medicinalplant based processing and value addition technologies are available. Details of business supportservices and guidelines in this context are also given in this booklet. Hope that this booklet will helpentrepreneurs in understanding the opportunities available in the Vishwa Vidyalaya.

Objectives
Demand for medicinal plants is increasing day by day due to growing apathy towards synthetic drugs. The WHO has reported that over 80 percent ofthe population in developing countries including India meets its primary health care needs through traditional medicine. India with the vast naturalresources and varied agro-climatic conditions has phenomenal scope to contribute towards the increasing global demand by taking up systematicscientific cultivation, processing and value addition of medicinal plants.
Little attention seems to have been given to medicinal plant based entrepreneurship development which certainly occupy a unique place ineconomic upliftment. The Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV) Jabalpur has created a strong base in medicinal plants R&D throughdeveloping agro-techniques of more than 30 plants including its processing and value addition. A gene pool rich herbal garden, greenhouse, nethouse, processing units, analytical laboratories for quality analytical analysis, training & education facilities are the strength and infrastructuredeveloped at JNKVV, Jabalpur through various schemes of State and Central Government viz., ICAR, NMPB etc. The present document has beenprepared based on transferable technology developed by medicinal plants group of JNKVV, Jabalpur to promote agri-business andentrepreneurship through Business Planning and Development Unit.
