SECURITY PROCEDURES

No one may enter the building without an appointment. All visitors must sign in at the Security Desk, located at the main entrance to the school. Visitors must show identification, sign the Visitors’ Log, fill out a visitor pass and return the pass to the security desk as they leave the building.

Those with requests for transcripts may contact the Counseling & Guidance Services Department for an appointment or may complete a request form at the Security Desk. No visitors are allowed to attend classes.

For security purposes we utilize a buzzer system, so please limit the number of items being dropped off for your student. Parents/guardians dropping off items for their student are to leave the items at the security counter. Please make sure that all items are clearly marked with the student’s name and grade. We are not responsible for the items being dropped off. We are not able to call into classrooms letting them know an item has been dropped off for them. It is your student’s responsibility to pick them up. Students may not have food delivered to school.

DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP STUDENTS ALL DOORS WILL BE LOCKED UNTIL 7:45 am. Do NOT DROP students off prior to 7:45 am. Students

will not have access to the building (unless specific arrangements have been made with a teacher or a coach).

Drop Off : Between 7:45 am-8:20 am-ALL students MUST be dropped off on the gymnasium side of the building.

All other doors will be locked. After 8:25 am students should be dropped off at the Attendance Office in front of the building.

Pick Up: All vehicles must use the gymnasium side. Please park in any space or around the perimeter of the parking lot if no spaces are available. No cars will be admitted at the West Entrance, between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm due to safety concerns and the large number of buses entering and leaving the campus. Do NOT park/pick up on El-ton Adelphia Rd.

When Students Need to Sign Out Early

On the morning of the early dismissal, please send in a note with your student stating the time, reason, and a phone number where you can be reached. Have them bring the note to the Attendance Office before home-room. The Attendance Office will call to confirm the note, and a pass will be given to your child to leave class at the designated time. This will eliminate unnecessary interruptions into a class. Please come into the attend-ance office to sign your student out. This procedure applies to all students.

I.D. CARDS I.D. cards will be issued for under-classmen when yearbook photos are taken. Students must carry their I.D.’s at all times. Failure to have an I.D. card will result in disciplinary action. Replacement I.D. cards are $5.00. A new ID card can be made in the main office.

PATRIOT NEWSLETTER August 2019 7

MESSAGE FROM THE SECA —-Mr. Adam Brusotti 732.431.8460 ext. 3011 [email protected]

The Office of the Supervisor of Extracurricular Activities embraces the attitude of Patriot Nation, championing academics and teamwork! Accountability and commitment are the cornerstones of this office’s philosophy; under my leadership the student-participants of Freehold Township High School continue to grow as citizens, within our school as well as throughout our surrounding communities. Our Athletic Alumni Association is a new way for the past, present and future of Freehold Township High School to connect.

The 2018-2019 academic year was again marked by success in both athletics and activities:

Division Championships were earned in Girls Soccer, Girls Tennis, Boys Cross Country, Gymnastics, Girls Bowling, Boys Basketball and Girls and Boys Track & Field. Our Boys Spring Track & Field team won their first ever Shore Conference Championship, our Boys Basketball team won their 1st ever State Sectional Championship, our Girls Bowling team won their first ever State Group Championship and Gymnastics won their 2nd consecutive Overall State Title. Our senior class boasted a District Wrestling Champion, Monmouth County Champions, Shore Conference Champions and State Champions while setting new school records in various sports. Follow @TownshipScores on Twitter for updates on all of Patriot Nation’s progress.

We had notable success off the field as well: 9 members of our choir were named to the All-Shore Chorus and 3 were named All-State. 20 members of our band earned All-Shore honors, while we had 3 All-Region band honoree and 1 All-State band member. We once again had county, regional, state or national accomplishments by participants in FCCLA, Forensics, FFA, Drama, and Art Club The Red Cross Club continued its community outreach by sponsoring two blood drives at the school and we hosted our first ever (and very successful) Dance For the Kids. We have dozens of clubs, all giving back to the community in their own way.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Wednesday, August 28th at 6:30 pm- Meet the Fall Coaches Night. This is a mandatory program for all Fall athletes and their parents that focuses on the policies and expectations of the SECA and coaches. Par-ents, we need your support to ensure a successful athletic season!

Thursday, September 19th– Activities Fair- Freshmen, get involved! It is always inspiring to see the students who become involved in various clubs and activities rise through the ranks and lead those clubs. Descriptions for the clubs we offer can be found on the SECA website.

Tuesday, September 24th at 7:50 am– Winter Sports Sign-Ups- Students interested in participating in Basketball, Bowling, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Winter Track, Wrestling or Dance must attend this meeting!

As stated earlier, academics take priority. It is necessary to maintain academic eligibility to compete in athletics or par-ticipate in extracurricular activities. We are proud of our 22 athletes from the Class of 2019 that will continue playing at the collegiate level. This was not an easy task for these stu-dents, but their commitment to academics only strengthened their prospects. Be the “student” in “student-participant.” I am looking forward to the success, news and honors of the Classes of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023!

PATRIOT NEWSLETTER August 2019 9

Freehold Township High School has been designated by the Anti-Defamation League as “No Place for Hate” for the 2018-2019 school year, once again. This year we have been honored as a GOLD Star school. This recognition celebrates commitment and support for establishing anti-bullying and acceptance activities within the school environment. No Place for Hate is a national initiative that supports educators and students in ensuring that their school environment is one where anti-bullying awareness strategies and acceptance practices are prevalent and embedded as an intrinsic part of their school’s culture.

Students and staff at Freehold Township High School participated in many activities throughout the school year which help to build a respectful, inclusive, and safe school community where all students can thrive. Such activities included Respect Week with a “A Step in the Right Direction” theme. The Work-place Training students collected over 1000 pledges to stamp out stereotyping. The school's Fine and Ap-plied art students who designed and constructed a Tolerance Ship once again displayed sails for all to see outside the media center. We also held Patriot Positivity Week during which students took the positivity pledge and performed random acts of kindness. Members of the Human Relations Committee also partic-ipated in Pride Week. One of the activities was Challenge Day; where students participated in one-on-one and group activities. They encouraged each other to look beyond their comfort zone and make friends with others. During Pride Week a leadership luncheon was conducted with a guest presenter. The interac-tive event focused on encouraging students to become leaders within their school and community and to confront their own bias feelings towards others. The school's Lead for Diversity students planned and decorated a bi-monthly bulletin board promoting harmony and respect among the student body. A special thank you to Ms. Jordan for making the application and for keeping us all organized, which resulted in this prestigious award!

NO PLACE FOR HATE: ADL Recognition—6th Year

Our annual “Patriot Citizenship Breakfast”, which honors all seniors that have had no discipline in all four years of high school, was held on June 10, 2019. This year there were 322 seniors (out of 514) honored from the Class 2019, which in-cluded our four seniors that had perfect attendance for all four years.

Congratulations to all of our stu-dents that were invited to the breakfast!

Early warning of excessive absences and cuts from class will help to alert parents and students and thus encourage improved attendance and avoid withdrawal of credit for the course. The chart below provides the schedule of parent notification, interventions and consequences of excessive absences.

Students who exceed the maximum number of absences or cuts for a course will NOT receive credit for the course and receive a grade of “W” for the marking periods and a failing grade, E, for the course. The course, if needed for gradua-tion or is a prerequisite for a higher level course, will have to be made up the following school year or at a tuition summer school. All absences are counted towards credit withdrawal, including those documented with notes. Absentee notes must be submitted by parents within 48 hours of the student’s return to school and will be reviewed if an appeal hearing to reinstate credit is requested by the student and their parent/guardian. Parent/guardians and students will be notified by mail if credit is withdrawn in a course; and also notified by correspondence , via the Parent Portal. If an appeal is requested the Faculty At-tendance Review Committee will meet with the student and parent/guardian to review the case and determine whether credit should be reinstated. Appeals for full year courses will be held during the final weeks of the course. Appeals for first semester courses will be held in February.

PATRIOT NEWSLETTER August 2019 13

Consistent daily attendance and punctual arrival to school is critical to the learning process and academic success. In accordance with State law, students are required to attend school regularly to ensure continuity of instruction and classroom participation. Our goal is to work collaboratively with parents/guardians to ensure that their child is in attendance each day school is in session. In an effort to encourage regular attendance and academic success at Freehold Township High School, Seniors must follow the following Attendance Thresholds to maintain the privilege of parking on campus.

Senior Parking Privilege Attendance Thresholds

• Students who lose their Parking Privilege due to accruing excessive unexcused absences according to the thresholds above will lose their ability to park on campus for a minimum of 30 days.

• If a student who has previously lost their Parking Privilege due to accruing excessive unexcused absenc-

es reaches the next threshold, the student will lose their ability to park on campus for a minimum of 60 days.

• After losing the Parking Privilege for 30 - 60 days, the student has the ability to earn the Parking Privilege

back if their absences remain under the corresponding thresholds above. • For the purpose of Senior Parking Privileges, Excused Absence is defined as an absence due to the rea-

sons below:

• An absence will be excused for a student’s illness (a physician’s note must be provided upon return or within 48 hours).

• An absence will be excused if a student has a death in his/her immediate family.

• An absence will be excused for school-sponsored educational opportunities.

• An absence will be excused for religious observances, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:36-14 through 16.

• An absence will be excused if a student is required to attend court or other judicious appointments.

• An absence will be excused for a reason not listed above, but deemed excused by the building princi-pal, upon written request by the student’s parent or legal guardian to the building principal or designee stating the reason for the absence and requesting permission for the absence to be excused.

Thank you for partnering with us in impressing upon your child the importance of consistent attendance at school.

FTHS HEALTH OFFICE

732-431-8460 x3043

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome back to a new school year at Freehold Township High School. We hope your summer was enjoyable. Please note the following school procedures regarding the Health Office.

When a student does not feel well, they should get a pass from their teacher and report to the Health Office. They will be evaluated by one of the nurses and, if necessary, a parent or guardian will be contacted. Students are always allowed to call their parents and should report to the Health Office prior to contacting their parent/guardian.

*ALL MEDICAL FORMS AND MEDICATION FORMS are required by the Health Office each school year may be found on the district website. Proceed to www.frhsd.com, go to Departments, scroll down to Health & Safety, click on Medical Forms, and then choose the appropriate forms.

If your child requires any of the following forms: asthma action plans, epi-pen medication packets, seizure action plans, or diabetes management packets, they must be completed by the parent and the student’s physician and returned to the school nurse at the beginning of the school year. Failure to provide medication forms will prevent your child from participating in athletics and attending school trips/prom. Only emergency medications (ie: asthma inhalers, seizure medications, EpiPen/Auvi-Q and Glucagon) are permitted to be taken on school trips. NO OTHER PRE-SCRIBED MEDICATION IS ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN! In addition, medications, including over-the-counter medications, cannot be given during the school day without a doctor’s order written on the Freehold Regional H.S. District Medication Form. An adult must bring the medication in the original labeled pharmacy container, or the original over-the-counter box, to the Health Office.

HEALTH CONCERNS: If your child currently has a health issue (i.e. diabetes, allergies, seizure disorder, etc.), please notify the school nurses at the beginning of the school year and note this on the Parent Portal.

EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION: Parents must go on the Parent Portal and complete all fields for emergency contacts, and make changes as needed during the school year. Please make sure that all parent/guardian emails are current and up to date as well, since we do use emails to communicate important information. Parents are always called first to pick up a student, but in the event they are unable to, only a per-son listed as an emergency contact may sign a student out after getting verbal permission from a parent.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION RESTRICTIONS (Required for all students including students in Option 2 and Sports Alternative): If your child is unable to participate in a physical education class a doctor’s note is required with the following information:

1. Diagnosis with an approximate return date (notes that state “until further notice” will only allow 2 weeks).

2. A doctor’s note is required for use of crutches and elevator in school.

3. It is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian to provide a doctor’s note after every doctor

appointment including a clearance note if applicable. Faxes are not recommended.

PHYSICALS: The Freehold Regional High School District, in accordance with New Jersey Law N.J.S.A. 18A:40-4 recommends physical examinations for all students at least once during their high school years.

For more information, refer to the Freehold Regional High School District Student-Family Handbook. Your child’s well-being is vital to his/her success at Freehold Township High School. Please feel free to contact the Health Office with any concerns you may have throughout the school year.

Wishing you and your child a healthy and successful school year!

PATRIOT NEWSLETTER August 2019 22

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL—DRESS CODE Parents and students are reminded that all FRHSD students must dress appropriately when coming to school. Disciplinary consequences for inappropriate dress are in the handbook.

Dress Code States: This Means:

Students may dress as they wish as long as it does not endanger their health or safety or the health or safety of other students.

You should use common sense when you dress for school, but the school staff will decide if an item jeopardizes anyone’s health or safe-ty.

Manner of dress must not create classroom disor-der or distract others.

The classroom teacher determines if clothing creates disorder or dis-tracts others. An item can cause a distraction either because of words or images printed on it or because of the amount of bare skin exposed.

Students should wear clothing which totally covers the torso. If wearing spandex pants the bottom of your shirt must reach your finger tips.

All shirts must have two sleeves or armholes. Halter, strapless or oth-er backless tops are not to be worn. The bottom of your shirt must reach the top of your pants. If you choose to wear low rise or saggy pants, make sure you also wear an extra long shirt so that NO bare skin is exposed. No part of your underwear should be visible.

Students should not walk barefoot in school and they must always wear some type of shoes, sneak-ers, sandals, etc.

Bedroom slippers, even fuzzy ones, do not meet this requirement and are not to be worn. State law requires that feet be completely covered in science labs. You will not be permitted to participate in lab and will receive a zero if your toes are exposed.

“Torn-off”, “half-shirts” or “muscle shirts” are not permitted for males, while “tube-tops” are not per-mitted for females.

“Torn-off” means either sleeve of the shirt has been ripped off. “Half-shirt” is one that does not go to the waist. “Muscle-shirts” refer to tank-tops for males. “Tube-tops” are strapless shirts that expose the midriff. None of these are to be worn to school.

Clothing more appropriate for beach wear (bathing suits, very short shorts, sleep wear, etc.) should not be worn to school.

The “etc.” refers to any beach attire INCLUDING very short shorts. A good rule to follow is that if you stand up with your hands at your sides, the bottom of your shorts should reach your fingertips. Skirts should be of a reasonable length. Walking up the stairs or bending over at a locker should not draw attention to body parts that should be covered.

Apparel with bias, offensive or profane messages will not be allowed Also, wearing or possessing items depicting or implying racial hatred, stereo-typing or prejudice will not be tolerated.

You may not think it offensive, but it could be to someone else, so do not wear it. School staff will determine if a message or image is of-fensive.

Specifically prohibited are sunglasses, hats, head-bands, bandanas, or other head coverings; metal chains, jewelry or accessory articles that have the potential to be used as a weapon, gang attire, facial markings that display non-school related symbol-ism.

“Du-rags” fall in the category of “other head coverings” that are not to be worn. The rest of the items listed are fairly self explanatory. If you are not sure if something is permitted, either ask a teacher or don’t wear it.
