RESEARCH APPROACH AND STRUCTUREThe overarching principle which guides researchwithin the Business School is that it shouldstrengthen understanding of its subject at aninternational level. The focus of our work is theproduction and dissemination of high-quality appliedresearch, set within an international context.

In all of our research activity, we aim to

• cultivate a research environment that is inclusive, supportive, productive and innovative

• enhance knowledge and understanding of businessand management theory and practice byconducting investigations according to acceptedprofessional standards

• produce research outputs of a quality that isinternationally excellent in terms of originality, significance, rigour and relevance

• disseminate research findings both internally, through research seminars and our researchmemoranda series, and externally, throughacademic journals, books, paper presentations andplenary keynote speeches at internationalconferences

Research output is generated by six research centres, which represent the primary units around which theschool’s research is focused.

The Centre for Economic Policy (CEP) provides afocus for research in applied economics.

The Centre for International Accounting andFinance (CIAF) has an emphasis on applied andinternational work on financial reporting as well asaccounting for intellectual capital, accountingeducation, real estate and entrepreneurial finance.

The Centre for Logistics Research (CLR) focuseson excellence in global logistics and supply chainmanagement.

The Centre for Management and OrganisationalLearning (CMOL) is concerned with theunderstanding, critique and improvement of learningprocesses for managers and organisations.

The Centre for Marketing, Communications andInternational Strategy (CMCIS) focuses on thestrategic use of integrated marketing communicationsas well as other applied research in marketing andinternational strategy.

The Centre for Economic Policy promotes andsupports research activities in economics, withparticular emphasis on economic policy.

In addition to this focus, the centre is active in moretheoretical areas of the subject, including researchundertaken into experimental economics, tradeunions, and migration and work using generalequilibrium modelling techniques.

Other projects have explored areas such as industrialpolicy and social responsibility research, withparticular reference to library performance; theinteraction between economic policy and politics;and crime and criminal justice policy.

Members of the centre are active on a national andinternational level, publishing widely and frequentlyparticipating in and presenting papers at internationalconferences. The CEP also supports an EconomicPolicy Seminar series, which encourages policy-related connections with economic decision makers.

The work of the centre has been recognised throughthe receipt of funding for research from theEngineering and Physical Sciences Research Council(ESPRC), the ESRC, the Nuffield Foundation and theBritish Academy.

Research on systems theory and practice, in thecontext of management, has been ongoing at Hull forover 25 years. The CSS, established in 1992 topromote this research, currently consists of amultidisciplinary group of nine core staff withexpertise in most of the major strands of systemsthinking, including general system theory, operationalresearch, cybernetics, soft systems thinking andcomplexity theory. The research of this group findscommon cause in a commitment to critical systemsthinking, which was largely developed at Hull and forwhich the Centre for Systems Studies provides aninternational hub.

Staff research is focused on

• fundamental systems research which aims toexplore and develop the theoretical bases andethical justification for systems thinking andpractice

• systems methodologies and methods fororganisational design, change and problem solving, with a particular focus on methodological pluralism

• information and knowledge management, informedby systems-based approaches

The CSS has built a strong transdisciplinary base oftheoretical research, intervention and teaching atnational and international levels. Its members havedeveloped extensive networks in systems thinkingand knowledge management, and have closepartnerships with top-ranking universities andresearch institutions across the world.

Emergence and complexity The Centre for Systems Studies is a member oftwo innovative EPSRC research projectsinvestigating emergence and complexity. The firstproject, Defying the Rules: How Self-OrganisationWorks in Social Systems, investigates differentperspectives on complexity and emergence, andthe impact of self-organisation on groupperformance. The second project, EmergingSustainability, aims to develop an open-sourcelearning context, documenting and evaluating thecharacteristics of self-organised communities andindustries in their efforts towards sustainability.
