Welcome back! The 2011—2012 school year looks to be the most exciting yet. A fundamental principle in the Finance Academy is the importance of networking. It is within that theme that the Schurz AOF has several new partnerships, each providing many unique opportunities for students. The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) will be bringing the spirit of ownership and a business plan competition to Juniors. Chicago Scholars will be teaming up with the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE) to assist Seniors in the college application process. Do not let these opportunities pass you by!!

Finance Academy Goes EXTREME at Young Entrepreneurs Conference
Forty Schurz AOF students were able to participate in a young entrepreneurs conference which featured speakers from the Extreme Entrepreneurship Tour. They heard from young, successful business leaders who shared their secrets to success. Students were asked to break through their fears (pictured right) and make the next step in achieving their dreams. Take their advice!! Do not be your own worst enemy, find a mentor, network with positive people, and persevere through those tough times.
The Schurz Academy of Finance successfully complet-ed over 100 job shadows to date at institutions includ-ing the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, AT&T, Veri-zon Wireless, Citibank, BP Products North America, and many more. Work-Based Learning (WBL) is an essential component to our program, exposing our stu-dents to the world of work. Congratulations to all par-ticipants for having the courage to leave your comfort zone and being outstanding ambassadors for Carl Schurz High School. Paid internships are up next for eligible candidates over
spring break at the Cook County Treasury Office, Tempel Steel, Brands Park, and Allstate Insurance. ***To be eligible for these opportunities you have to be getting the job done in ALL of your classes, i.e. A’s B’s, here everyday, on time to every class, and never
in the discipline office.

The BPA FLC provid-ed an opportunity for stu-dents to develop skills that are vital to success in the professional service com-munity. These include communication, team-work, creativity, taking a
risk, originality, organization and punctuality. Sophomore Juan Martinez is pictured here trying to sell his teams’ new idea for us-ing a red ball. Schurz AOF students took the lead time and time again in these activities. BPA State Advisor Kye-Anne Wilborn and AOF Coordinator Mr. Rutter were incredibly impressed with how everyone performed over the weekend. Congrats to all.
The BPA Fall Leadership Conference also marked the end of Megan Ghanayem’s tenure as IL BPA Historian. Megan ful-filled her responsibilities to the state office with distinction and is currently attending the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. SUMMER INTERNS 2008 EXCEL
Over 20 teams from the Chicago Public Schools came to compete at the University of Chicago in the
Youth About Business Summer Camp, 2008. Only three teams from the camp earned a spot to attend Champion-
ship Week held in New York City from July 25 to August 2. Seven students from the Carl Schurz Academy of
Finance (AOF) made the cut to the finals.
This AOF Championship Team consisted of Schurz sophomores Aaron Feinhandler, Angelo Mercado,
Juan Reyes, and Carissa Eclarin, along with Juniors Stephanie Velasquez and Patricia Eclarin. Senior Megan Gha-
nayem anchored the team as Chief Executive Of-
ficer (CEO).
These Schurz students were housed on
the Columbia University campus while they spent
their days working on a case study involving two
online investment companies, Ameritrade and E*
Trade. The competition was straight out from to-
day’s business pages. Would the Schurz team engi-
neer a merger or an acquisition?
In preparation for negotiations, the seven
Schurz students held extensive meetings during the
week with Wall Street lawyers, executives, and
other experts. “It was a very intense week,” admit-
ted 16 year old Juan Reyes. “There was so much
data to sift through, we really needed to be well
informed before we made our decision.”
As hard as the team worked, they were still at a summer
camp, so the workload was considerably reduced by recreational
activities such as a dinner cruise around Manhattan. The Schurz
team also learned to cope with stress the way many execs do, with a
round of golf at the exclusive Chelsea Piers, golf pros included.
The week of meet-
ings, paperwork, and presen-
tation-building culminated
when the Schurz team decided
that the best way to serve stockholders was to merge the companies. They
were, however, unable to agree to terms that would satisfy the stockholders
and enhance the bottom line. This outcome was explained by a presentation
that included a stockholders report and recommendations on how a deal
might be struck.
“It was unbelievable how hard these students worked during this
competition,” said Mr. Kevin Rutter, the Schurz AOF Coordinator who ac-
companied the team. “The point of the Youth About Business is to give high
school students a taste of life on Wall Street; our students experienced it to
the fullest.”
The Youth About Business Summer Camp finalists will not be
announced until mid-September. But the Schurz AOF students already rank
as winners in the eyes of students, friends, family, and neighbors. It is more
an honor that they brought back from New York; it is the will and the know-
how to strengthen the vitality of the Portage Park community.
The Schurz Academy of Finance is a part of the CPS Education-to-
Careers Program. This is the third team Schurz has sent to the Youth About
Business Summer Camp. It is the first time a
Schurz team has qualified as a national finalist.

News and Notes
Fifteen students attended the Business Profession-als of America’s annual Fall Leadership Conference in Oak Brook, IL on November 16-17. Aside from networking with schools from all over the state, several students distinguished themselves by assuming leadership roles during the seminars.
The principal function of this conference is to elect officers for the BPA Illinois Association. This involves a speech in front of the membership as well and a Q&A ses-sion. Senior Valdemar Duran had the courage to run for a state position and was voted into office as Vice President!! He will be the first officer from a city school in over ten years. Let us make sure that we thank Valdemar for taking a risk and accepting the responsibility of being a state officer
in this national organization of business professionals.
Also, thanks to all that par-ticipated, you did an outstanding job representing yourself and the Schurz Acade-my of Finance. :)
There are no secrets to
success. It is the result of
preparation, hard work
and, learning from
failure.
