Opening upTNQ IT’S an initiativethat will providecritical growthfor Tropical North Queensland(TNQ) and open up Cairns andGreat Barrier Reef to greatertourism - and it came about onSaturday when SilkAir ightM1828 touched down at CairnsInternational Airport - theairline’s rst service into Cairns.
Described as the start of anew aviation chapter for TNQ,Kevin Brown, Cairns Airport ceosaid SilkAir would y to Cairnsthree times a week oering bothbusiness and economy class onits latest Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
“This linkage with Singaporewill better connect travellersfrom throughout Asia, India, theUK and Europe into Cairns, whichwe expect to generate up to $14million in visitor expenditure inCairns in the rst year,” he said
Tourism Minister Kate Jones(represented by Treasurer CurtisPitt on the tarmac to welcomedisembarking passengers), saidTourism and Events Queenslandhad worked to promote the newroute in key Asian and Europeanvisitor markets.
“Promotions have appearedacross digital, print, radio, socialmedia and outdoor advertising,featuring holiday packages toCairns and the Great BarrierReef,” Jones said.
Also commenting on theservice, Alex de Waal, ceoof Tourism Tropical NorthQueensland, said as well asproviding access to SouthEast Asia SilkAir will also bringpassengers from India and thetraditional markets of Europeand the United Kingdom.

the expo sector’s prole in the
markeng industry is a “major
challenge and one that the
Associaon has made a priority”.
Speaking to delegates during
a day-long program of meengs
and workshops which coincided
with the EEAA annual general
meeng at Sydney Royal Stables
last Thu, Genua said: “a strategic
reposioning of the sector is
what is needed.
“It can be done - that’s our
industry’s challenge,” he said.
A higher prole would ensure
that exhibions and their
associated events “can get a
bigger share of the markeng
spend,” Genua added.
The meeng also saw seven
appointments to the EEAA board

a response to growth in numbers
from MICE buyers who have been
included in the event since its
incepon in 2012.
