SEGMENT IV Business English Ace Phrasal Verbs, Idioms, Collocation
If there is one part of English vocabulary that students fear, it has to be
studying phrasal verbs, idioms, and collocations.
Relax!
As you know every week you and I explore a new phrasal verb, idiom, or
collocation that you can use in your business conversations or documents.
Last week in Episode 54 you learned about the idiom a dime a dozen.
You can go back to listen about how to use a dime a dozen at http://www.businessenglishace.com/bear54. Today you learn about the Business Collocation – Takeover Bid.
Business English Ace Radio – Class Notes 7 ©2016
Wham Media
“Takeover” has a few collocations in Business English. Collocations are “chunks of English” that you can learn to expand your vocabulary. Takeover bid means one company tries to buy the shares of another company to gain control of it. EX: Macrosoft’s takeover bid to buy the video channel failed when the latters’ shareholders refused to sell their stock. So now you know how to use the Business Collocation takeover bid – in
your business conversations or emails.
Remember you can download the today’s class notes at
www.businessenglishace.com/bear55.
Continue to expand your business vocabulary with every episode
of the podcast so you are ready for the quiz!

SEGMENT VII
Business English Ace Twisted English
Every week your Twisted English segment helps you understand
headlines in the financial news.
Twisted English is when you and I examine news headlines with a twist.
In the last episode, Episode 54, you learned about the phrase: “to be
cleared for takeoff.”
You may go back and listen to Episode 54 at
http://www.businessenglishace.com/bear54.
Today you and I look at the following headline in our Twisted English
series: Deflated Pump Maker Will Revive.
What does the expression “deflated pump” mean?
The twist in the headline comes from combining “deflate” which means to
be down and “pump” which means “to inflate” with the final turn in the
headline – “revive.”
Business English Ace Radio – Class Notes 10 ©2016
Wham Media
If someone or something is “revived,” they have another opportunity,
usually to live.
Plus the company is a “pump maker” which is deflated or probably not
doing good business right now, according to the headline.
So in our headline today, there is a twist inside a twist.
Thus, the headline could be rewritten as Deflated Pump Maker Will Rise
Again.
That’s your Twisted Business English Phrase of the Week – deflated
pump.
Stay tuned for more Twisted Business English right here every week on
Business English Ace Radio.
And by the way, tell your friends about this episode to boost their Business
English as well.

SEGMENT VIII – Erroneous English Question Answer
Ok, it´s time to answer our Erroneous English Question.
Our Erroneous English Question deals with confusion using Device and
Devise.
Our question is –
Which is correct English?
A) The company director deviced a plan to protect the price of the
stock.
OR
B) The company director devised a plan to protect the price of the
stock.
Business English Ace Radio – Class Notes 11 ©2016
Wham Media
First, two definitions.
Device is a noun and is never used as a verb. It means an invention made
for a specific purpose or reason.
Like for example: The smartphone is a device to communicate by text,
voice, and audio.
Devise, on the other hand, is a verb which means to plan.
For Example:
The CEO devised a plan to cut costs and save the company from default.
So, Letter B – The company director devised a plan to protect the price
of the stock – is the correct English.
Did you get the right answer?
