A. ABOUT YMCA HUMBER

Thank you for expressing interest in applying for the Business Director post at the YMCA Humber.

YMCA Humber is a part of the YMCA movement, a movement that has served the local communities all over the world for the past 170 years. YMCA Humber has had a local presence for nearly 110 years, and is poised for entering an exciting new trajectory of growth and transformation in the coming years. For the first time since our inception, we now have a presence on both sides of the Humber, with Turning Point, a project that provides housing and support to ex-offenders on the North Bank of the Humber, joining us in January 2015.

Our housing projects, both sides of the Humber, support close to 150 vulnerable adults to make positive changes in their lives. In addition to our two supported living hostels on the South bank that provide accommodation to about 93 vulnerable young people, we also provide supported living on the South Bank through a Community House, a transformational idea which allows young people from an offending background to live in a shared community house

within the local community to experience independent living firsthand. The project has been hugely successful, and has got accolades, appreciation and wide coverage in the local and national media for the positive impact it has had on the lives of the people it has touched, including bagging the coveted ‘YMCA of the Year’ award in 2013 at the Annual Youth Matters Awards.

We are passionate about the impact youth work has on the local community and developing our outreach work with children, young people and vulnerable adults is a strategic aim for our future and this has entered new phase. Whilst the primary focus of the Association remains providing supported housing for vulnerable young people, we are also now making big inroads into working with young people in education establishments, traditional youth settings and through targeted outreach work to inform support and influence them and prevent homelessness.

We are also on the threshold of redeveloping our Peaks Lane hostel, which is no longer fit for purpose. The re-build of the Peaks Lane campus, to be renamed, Trinity Campus, is one of our core strategic goals for the future and we envision the

new building to begin a new chapter for the vulnerable people living in the local area. The redevelopment is likely to get underway in late 2015, and will allow us to fuse a high standard of accommodation with excellent training and education facilities to ensure that young people living in our hostels develop the necessary personal and social skills that they need to lead successful, sustainable lifestyles once they leave YMCA Humber and move into independent living.

YMCA Humber’s turnover currently is nearly 1.5 million and this is likely to increase by a quarter of a million in this financial year. The last few years have been a time of tremendous change and growth, and we are now on the cusp of growing exponentially, but significantly before embarking on this, we will need to consolidate the growth we have achieved so far.

It is at this critical juncture that we seek to recruit the Business Director post. As the Business Director, you will be instrumental in ensuring that we deliver on our promises to our funders, and that the Association is able to capitalise on, and deliver value for money on all its new and existing projects. Significantly, you will be also entrusted with the

responsibility of ensuring that people remain at the centre-stage of all the work we do as it is our genuine belief that it is people that form the Association and it is the young-people who we seek to serve that matter. As a part of the Leadership Team, the post-holder will be responsible to identify, lead and project manage the setting-up of a social enterprise for YMCA Humber to generate sustainable sources of profitable income to expand YMCA Humber’s commercial interests and increase social impact. Leading the business team, the post-holder will be accountable for developing strong working relationships with new and existing commissioners and service purchasers at decision maker level, to ensure clarity and consistency of communication and quick resolution of any issues. The

post-holder will also need to prioritise the identification of new ways to generate charitable surpluses from our core work in order to ensure its continued sustainability and profitability.

I. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Business development:

1. To lead, critically examine and secure opportunities for new and alternative ways for YMCA Humber to develop and deliver a diverse range of commercially viable and sustainable services, through a social enterprise, which are in line with our ethos, values and strategic priorities.

2. To enhance profitability and sustainability of YMCA Humber’s established core activities in liaison with the Senior Management Team (SMT). This will include producing and reviewing on an ongoing basis, the financial projections and possible growth plans for YMCA Humber’s existing core-activity.

3. To strategically lead market research and work with potential and existing customers within the community, including with Local Authority Officials, Community Leaders, Business Leaders, Schools and other potential customers, to identify likely products and services that can be delivered by YMCA Humber. In addition, build YMCA Humber’s reputation as a key supplier of these services.

4. Lead and strategically manage the development and implementation of YMCA Humber’s strategy for business development, including identifying possibility of developing YMCA Humber’s commercial enterprises and generating income for the charitable entity

B. Commercial

1. Strategically lead and project manage new business projects and maximise new business opportunities, ensuring the profitability of YMCA Humber’s services.

2. Develop strong working relationships with new and existing commissioners and service purchasers at decision maker level to ensure clarity and consistency of communication and quick resolution of any issues.

3. Project manage the development and submission of tenders by taking a lead role in bid writing, including making presentations if required; and negotiating service level agreements.

4. Create a portfolio of relevant documentation to support tenders and bids

5. Pro-actively drive sponsorship revenues from YMCA Humber events, publications and identify opportunities to develop advertising revenues

6. Make effective use of resources to deliver the required outcomes and monitor performance of key activities

1. Own the development of YMCA Humber as a brand with overall strategic responsibility for the organisation’s commercial plans and communication

2. Develop and manage innovating marketing strategies & tactics including sales, promotions and advertising campaigns for the achievement of business objectives and for promoting YMCA Humber’s services and products.

3. To lead in devising a full marketing plan for YMCA Humber’s products and services, including but not limited to pricing, promotion strategy, and partnership working where appropriate.

4. Effectively establish, maintain and use relationships with the media to explain and promote the organisation and its work and services.

5. Create & drive the commercial strategy for sponsorship, advertising, marketing

6. Advise the Stakeholder Relations Manager and Communications Coordinator to develop an effective and engaging public profile of YMCA Humber through the organisation’s web site, social networking sites and publicity material development

D. Relationship building:

1. Have overall responsibility for all business development activities, using existing relationships initially and maximising opportunities from these, but also seeking out prospects in new areas.

2. Develop and nurture relationships based on mutual trust and respect with potential business partners, including within the charitable and corporate sectors

3. Work with the Funding and Volunteer Coordinator to identify and develop relationships with potential corporate funders.

E. Project Management and Senior Management Responsibility

1. To strategically manage all new work sourced (in addition to accommodation) by the organisation, ensuring that the requirements of the project are communicated clearly, there is a robust project-plan to ensure that timescales are met, that the work is financially viable and well-managed and that all concerns are redressed adequately.

2. To ensure that commissioned work is developed within YMCA Humber’s ethical framework, and any risks are raised and managed at the appropriate time and level. In addition, provide knowledgeable input to help build a sustainable and high performing organisation.

3. As a member of the senior management team, contribute to overall strategic and business planning of the organisation, in order to realise the organisation’s goals and vision. In addition,

play a key role in developing YMCA Humber’s strategic growth, in line with overall long-term business plans

4. Build a high performing development team recognised via achievement of business goals and growth plans.

5. Attend and participate in regular Senior Management Meetings, producing timely reports and information as required, including reports for the Board of Management based on previously agreed timescales.

6. Deliver on agreed strategic and operational targets

7. Manage, mentor and inspire the existing business development team, bringing in new ideas, methodologies and processes in order that they can perform to the best of their abilities.

8. Build and steer an effective team with a strong customer, quality and outcome focus

9. Inspire and inform staff and trustees of YMCA Humber so that they understand, and engage in supporting business goals to achieve income to enable the organisation’s charitable activities

F. Financial Leadership

1. Take full responsibility for commercial aspects including budgets and profitability of YMCA Humber’s existing and new business interests

2. Working closely with the Financial Manager, provide expert advice to multiple stakeholders on all financial matters, including to the Board of Management, its various sub-committees, and external partners including, banks, auditors and others.

3. Develop timely and accurate monthly, quarterly and annual summary and detailed financial reports for the Chief Executive and the Board of Management, highlighting financial projections, profitability and any concerns for new and existing work commissioned to the organisation.

4. Oversee development of financial analysis and reports for the Board of Management and the Chief Executive and working collaboratively and decisively, to support the organisation in interpreting business intelligence.

5. Work with members of the Finance Team to prepare annual budgets and year-end accounting statements

6. Work with Finance Team to establish the systems to collect, store and analyse information required to measure and manage performance in all areas of the Charity’s work.

G. Christian Identity

1. To strengthen and uphold the Christian identity of the organisation, so that there is a tangible difference for the young people that we serve.

2. To actively communicate and represent the YMCA’s Christian faith base and identity in all dealings.

H. Sites: Regular visits to all YMCA Humber sites as required.

1. The Business Director role is leadership role with the expectation that the post-holder develops innovative working practices and procedures that have a significant impact on service delivery.

1. Some duties will require working evenings and weekends.

2. The Business Director will work in a normal office environment so the potential risk of being subject to verbal or physical abuse is assessed as being low. Some contact with Clients is expected but this is infrequent and not on a one-one basis.
