Types of communications :

Verbal communication

This entails communicating with words which may be written or spoken.

Non-Verbal Communication

The process of communication through sending & receiving wordless messages.

Facial expression

By this we can convey our messages or communicate so much without speaking a word.

The face is the most expressive means of body communication

Example for facial expressions are happiness, smile, fear, sad, anger.

Eye behaviour communicate in many ways.

It shows emotions to the receiver

They not only supply information, they receive it as well.

Gestures

Gestures are physical movements of arms, legs, hands, & head, which help one to express thoughts and emphasis one’s speech.

There are two types of gestures:

i. Positive gesturesii. Negative gestures

Positive gestures

Positive gestures includes :

Tilting the head Leaning a little towards the speaker Gently nodding the head in agreement Keeping palm open Eye to eye confrontation etc…

Negative gestures includes : Folding both arms Hands in pocket Biting nails Blinking the eyes a lot Setting the hair with the hand Attending meeting with the cell phone on Drumming fingers etc….

Body Shape & Postures

It mainly describes about the appearance, shape of our bodies, posture. Both of our body shape and postures affect what

i. we think about ourselvesii. how we relate to others iii. how others relate to us oriv. How they respond to our moves

appearance include clothing, hair, jewelry cosmetics etc

Proxemics (Space language)

Proxemics is the study of how we communicate with space around us.

The space around us convey a definite meaning.

Space refers to the distance between the sender & receiver of communication

Time Language

Another mode of non-verbal communication which implies how the use of time influence the communication.

Being late for a public meeting means you are careless, uninvolved. But for high ranking officers, politician & VIP it shows they are busy

Para Language

Closer to oral communication and always accompany body language.

It is non-verbal because it comprises words.

It is defined as “ a type of non-verbal communication that includes articulation, pronunciation, rate, pitch, volume, pauses, and other vocal qualities”

i. Voice Qualities : pitch, rhythm, speaking rate

ii. Voice characterstics : crying, yawning, coughing, clearing the throat

iii. Voice Qualifiers : over sound & over soft or pitch high to low

iv. Vocal segregates : ah, um, hm ,shh

Communication process done by the use of mutually understood signs & symbols.

i. Visual signs : photographs, posters, cartoons etc

i. Sound signals : alarms signals, whistlers, blowing a horn etc
