We’ve had a busy few months here at the Chamber, working hard to advocate on behalf of the Windsor-Essex business community. This has involved numerous fruitful meetings with Premier Wynne where we have discussed the future of the province and what that means for our region, as well as addressed many issues relevant to our membership. This included hosting a roundtable with Premier Wynne and the Hon. Teresa

Piruzza at Centerline (Windsor) limited to talk about jobs in the region.

In March, I represented the Windsor-Essex region at the Ontario Agri-Food Sector Economic Summit in Clinton, ON, hosted by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. We were able to connect with other Chambers and hear concerns and solutions regarding the agri-food industry, results of which should be published shortly.

The second of our papers, the Regional Energy Paper was released in March. From a business perspective, the energy system is an important component of business competitiveness in a global market. For them to succeed all levels of government must ensure that we have a reliable, modern and efficient supply

of energy at reasonable rates. The paper outlines the challenges of the current system and a number of recommendations that are based on achievable outcomes and is available on our website at www.windsorchamber.org

As always, we have lots of amazing events coming up including the Chamber Ball at Beach Grove Golf & Country Club on Friday, June 21, where we’ll be celebrating the outgoing Chair of the Board, Ed Miles and honouring lifetime Achievement Award Recipients Bill and Rochelle Tepperman.

The Chamber, along with presenting sponsor KPMG, is holding our second annual technology event, Windsor-Essex Techtoberfest, on Tuesday, October 29 at the Caboto Club. last year’s event saw the premiere of the BlackBerry Z10 and this year’s should prove to be even more exciting!

The Windsor-Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation announces the community coming together to advance the Cancer Care in Windsor & Essex County. The $3.2 million announced to date brings the “It’s In your Jeans” campaign closer to the $4 million necessary to support the Men’s Health Programs at Windsor Regional Hospital, The DaVinci Robot and Cancer Research. The 2013 World Alzheimer Day Run (WADR) is scheduled for Sunday, September 22, in Amherstburg. They are in need of 300+ volunteers in many areas with a focus on road closer/barricades, parking/traffic enforcement and water stations aids. Volunteers are also needed Saturday, September 21 to support the 5k run at Malden Park. Volunteer hours accumulated for this event can be applied to high school community involvement requirements. Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted the Fourth Jobs Roundtable with The Hon. Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, at Centerline (Windsor) limited, moderated by Matt Marchand, President and CEO of the Windsor- Essex Chamber on March 11.

Premier Wynne listened and had a very good conversation with all of the meeting participants as they shared their insights and recommendations on what the government and businesses can do together to create jobs. Also present were representatives from theWindsor-Essex business community, including the University of Windsor, St. Clair College, Caesars Windsor, Union Gas, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, Media Street, Chrysler, Ford, Investors Group, Valiant, TGI Group, KPMG, and representatives from the solar sector.

“This was an outstanding meeting and a great opportunity to share our views as to how best to move the region forward. We were impressed with the engagement of the Premier and Minister Teresa Piruzza,” said Marchand.

“I also want to thank the Premier for the Southwestern Ontario Economic Development Fund that will help our region. By working together with the Premier and Minister Piruzza, there is no doubt we can achieve even greater things as we move forward,” Marchand continued.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, representatives from the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce and WEEDC attended the Ontario Economic Summit’s Economic leadership Series on Ontario’s Agri-Food Sector at the Regional Equine & Agricultural Centre of Huron (REACH) in Clinton, ON.

The summit included multiple panels reviewed the Agri-Food sectors’ value proposition, examined workforce development opportunities, access to capital (seeking non-traditional funding sources), proven management techniques, infrastructure and how to identify what types of activities and innovations are currently happening in the agri-food sector in the region. Brainstorming sessions identified key issues and the next steps will be outlined shortly.

The Hon. Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario was the keynote speaker for the luncheon portion of the summit.

Windsor-Essex Chamber President & CEO Matt Marchand represented the agri-food business interests of the Windsor-Essex Region. “Our agri-food sector is an important portion of our local economy. Attending

this summit will ensure that the concerns of our agri-food businesses will be heard,” said Marchand. “We are also looking forward to hearing Premier Wynne’s insights.”

Rakesh Naidu, Acting Chief Operating Officer for the WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation added, “Agri-Business is important to this region’s economy and is a priority industry that supports our future economic growth. We continue to work with agri-businesses in our region to support and advocate on a number of issues that could impact the success of retention and expansion for this valuable sector.”

The event is presented by the Huron and Ontario Chambers of Commerce. This Economic Summit is part of the Ontario Chamber’s Emerging Stronger 2013 plan, which is a transformational agenda aimed at accelerating Ontario’s economic growth. It identifies Ontario’s challenges and advantages, and sets out practical and detailed recommendations for government and business.

WINDSOR ESSEx CHAMBER RElEASES ENERGy PAPER

The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and the Fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec (FCCQ) in supporting single sports betting in Canada. The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce is an umbrella organization representing the network of over 100 local chambers in the four Atlantic Provinces. Fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec represents 150 Chambers of Commerce in Quebec and 1,200 of the largest Québec corporations.

This support letter is in addition to the previous letter on November 21, 2012, signed by the Ontario Chamber, the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce and the Windsor-Essex Chamber asking Senators to support Bill C-290.

In this joint letter, the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and the FCCQ call for the adoption of Bill C-290, which would delete specific provisions of the Criminal Code that make it illegal to bet on “any race or fight, or on a single sports event or athletic contest.” From there, each province would be able to decide whether or not, and under what conditions, wagering on single sporting events will be permitted to occur.

Bill C-290 received support from all parties in the House of Commons on March 2, 2012 and has been waiting the approval of the Senate since. The Bill would contribute to the creation of additional jobs at provincially-operated/regulated casinos, attracting U.S. citizens to Canadian casinos, and reducing organized crime associated with single event betting.

“The chamber coalition supporting Bill C-290 continues to grow across the country. The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce greatly appreciates the support of Atlantic Chamber of Commerce and the FCCQ,” said Matt Marchand, President and CEO of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Additionally, two-thirds of Canadian tax payers support legalizing sports betting according to a recent Ipsos Reid poll,” added Marchand.

“It is estimated that nothing less than $14 billion dollars of Canadian offshore and illegal betting goes under taxation radar every year. In an era where governments are clamping down on tax evaders and cheats it would seem a no-brainer that to move forward to legalize this type of betting would be a win-win for the Canadian gaming industry as well as for the Canadian tax payer,’’ said Pierre Cadieux, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce.

“Allowing a regulated provincial organization to manage sport betting will certainly help to combat organized crime as well,” said Bruno-Serge Boucher, Vice President of the FCCQ. “loto-Québec is a responsible corporation that contributes part of their profit for social development.”

The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce has released a comprehensive Regional Energy Paper. The paper continues the series of three proactive policy papers focused on Windsor-Essex business priorities. The first paper released was the Chamber’s Regional Transportation Paper.

The Regional Energy Paper was developed by the Chamber’s Environment and Energy Committee chaired by David Diemer from Dillon Consulting limited and vice-chaired by Natalie Byczynski, Chrysler Canada.

Initially a vision from a 100 day plan by Matt Marchand, the newly appointed Chamber President and CEO in March 2012, the paper was developed as a result of a Chamber Priorities survey as well as an extensive consultation process. The Environment and Energy Committee is comprised of Chamber members with expertise in the areas of environment or energy.

The Chamber’s Energy paper calls for an energy system in Ontario that ensures reliable, modern and efficient supply of energy to its customers at reasonable rates to enable business and industry to be competitive in a global market. The Chamber recommendations also call for:

• More transparency in the actual breakdown of the Global Adjustment fees associated with energy bills in Ontario and reporting out to electricity users on regular basis• More transparency in re-examining the costs, benefits and sustainability of the current energy supply mix, including renewables in the Province of Ontario• Keeping commitments made to participants in the renewable energy sector by making adequate and timely upgrades to accommodate planned power grid connections• Supporting the shift from Coal to Natural Gas in the supply mix for electricity generation

“The Chamber looks forward to working with the government to implement these recommendations,” says David Diemer, Chair of the Chamber’s Environment and Energy Committee.

“The Environment and Energy Committee has done a tremendous job in creating this paper and we are pleased with the result. The Chamber is continuing to provide leadership on issues that our members face every day,” says Ed Miles, Chair of the Board for the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Daniel and Merja Avena opened dressed by an Olive after learning more about olive oil in a tasting room in Palm Springs. There, they tasted the differences between the oils they had been buying and premium extra virgin olive oils. “We wanted to bring this concept to Windsor-Essex for other people to taste and to become educated and aware,” explained Merja

In our experiences with customers, we see SIP trunk installations paying for themselves – meaning, the entire installation of a new IP phone system and telephones paid for in less than a year. One recent installation, which transitioned a provincial retail organization to SIP trunks, resulted in a 40 percent reduction in telephony costs and a very rapid payback.

SIP trunks reduce costs in several ways:• With SIP trunking it is no longer necessary to purchase expensive PRIs (Primary Rate Interfaces) allowing the user to buy just the capacity they need. This is a major cost savings
