Dog Park Planned Near Marsh Lake

Planning for a much-anticipated project for the community

recently began when City Council approved a contract for site development services by Strand Associates for a dog park.

The park will be located on River Road near Marsh Lake in an area known as Black Bottom. It will be connected to Marsh Park via a future extension of the Great Miami River Trail. It will have its own parking and access but will be considered an extension of Marsh Park. It was identified in the Marsh Park Master Plan developed in 2016.

Plans call for an entry plaza, restrooms, a water feature, multiple areas and access from adjacent neighborhoods as well as the multi-use trail from Marsh Park.

Trick or Treat October 316 to 8 pm

Fire Department PurchasesBulletproof Vests

Ci ty o f fa i rfi e ld , oh i o2

To protect firefighters and paramedics when they are called

to assist in potentially unstable situations, the Fire Department recently purchased bulletproof vests, emulating the trend of many Fire Departments across the nation.

The vests will be part of the gear that firefighters and paramedics maintain each shift, and will be maintained on various emergency vehicles. They will be mandatory in situations when dispatchers have information that the request for assistance involves the potential

for direct confrontation, including shootings, stabbings, fighting, alcohol, violent crime scenes, or other high risk of violence.

“While we want our personnel to be protected in high risk situations, we do not want the people we are called to help to perceive us as a threat,” said Fire Chief Don Bennett. “This is why we have purchased red vests that are highly identifiable as Fire Department, and why our personnel will only be wearing them in situations that pose high risk.”

Opiate Task Force Hosts Butler County Coroner

Dr. Lisa Mannix, Butler County Coroner, was a recent guest

speaker at a meeting of the Fairfield Opiate Task Force.

Dr. Mannix shared information and data about the Opiate issue specific to Butler County. Out of 192 Heroin/Fentanyl overdose deaths in all of Butler County in 2016, 12 were in Fairfield.

Also at the meeting, Fairfield Fire Lt. Jamie Viers provided data specific

to the number of overdose calls in Fairfield. The Department started tracking data about suspected overdoses differently in February and is working with the Police Department on data collection.

In calls related only to Emergency Medical Services from Feb. 2 to June 5, Opiates were suspected in 68 of those calls out of 1,238 total. Also during this timeframe, 98 doses of Narcan were administered.

Fairfield will soon have its very own hometown brewery, Swine City Brewing, opening later this year at 4614 Industry Drive at the corner of Symmes Road and Industry Drive. This family and employee-owned brewery will be led by a local team consisting of Dan and Debby Ebben, Claire Von Saucken, Jeffrey Herring, Chris Schulz, and Justin “Pee Paw” Chaney.

When asked why they chose Fairfield, Dan Ebben said “This is a great drinking and arts community, but I have to drive 20-30 minutes to drink at a brewery.”

Swine City wants to add what it perceives to be a missing element to Fairfield, aiming to be a community gathering place with live music on the patio, food trucks, and events.

So, what kind of beer will Swine City brew? The owners say they won’t bore you with the same old beers.

Swine City will offer several regular beers including a blonde ale, but its focus will be on the ever-changing tap list.

“We have a 10 barrel system which will allow

for more creativity and variety,” Ebben said.

Jeff Herring added “We have a great understanding of the history of Greater Cincinnati and Butler County, so we know what people like.” Justin “Pee Paw” Chaney specializes in saisons, a type of floral, rustic French beer that uses wild yeast to yield a peppery, sometimes tart flavor.

The name “Swine City” pays homage to Cincinnati being known as “Porkopolis” due to its history as a meat-packing town. To further the Fairfield connection, the tap room bar was built using wood from an old barn at a local hops farm on John Gray Road, one of the oldest farms in Fairfield.

Swine City will initially be open from Thursday through Sunday. Check out www.swinecitybrewing.com for updates and links to social media accounts.

With 1950s pompadour hairstyles and an authentic mix of country, rockabilly and honky-tonk, The Malpass Brothers are “unabashed purveyors of tradition” from Goldsboro, North Carolina. They’ve toured with the late Don Helms, opened for music legend Merle Haggard, and appeared on stages from the Shetland Islands to Ryman Auditorium to Merlefest. Gifted musicians and songwriters, the brothers have shared billing with artists including Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Doyle Lawson, Rhonda Vincent, Marty Stuart, Doc Watson and more.

DAN ST. PAUL | WHAT’S FUNNY AFTER 50?SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 2018

Armed with a Bachelors Degree in Italian, a teaching credential, and a Masters Degree in special education, the majority of Dan’s material comes from being a

suburban husband and father and dealing with the frustrations of everyday life. Having appeared on NBC, ABC, FOX, Comedy Central, A&E, VH-1, and opened for

Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, and many other entertainers, Dan leaves audiences rolling in the aisles.

The Fairfield Parks and Recreation department is joining the ranks of communities that are latching onto one of the hottest sports. Pickleball is a sport in which two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a whiffle ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, with a few modifications. Pickleball was invented as a children’s backyard pastime, but quickly became popular among adults as a fun game for players of all levels. The courts striped for Pickleball are located on the tennis courts at Harbin Park, Waterworks Park, and Gilbert Farms Park. If interested in playing in a Pickleball league in Fairfield please call the Fairfield Parks office at 867-5348.

Improvements to sections of Symmes and Seward Roads were recently completed.

On Seward, the improved area was south of Tylersville to the CSX railroad tracks. A few feet of pavement were added in order to accommodate a paved shoulder, increasing safety.

On Symmes, the culvert near the former Fisher Body Plant was extended to accommodate a third lane and the section west of Hicks got a new striping pattern. These changes eliminated the awkward eastbound merge before the culvert and replaced it with a center dual left turn lane that extends to Hicks.

These improvements were funded by $650,000 from the Ohio Public Works Commission and $110,000 through a Community Development Block Grant.

Property Maintenance

Have you been out enjoying a walk in your neighborhood when you

encountered a sidewalk blocked by low hanging tree branches or rogue shrubbery? Did you duck or go around? Did you know the City of Fairfield has ordinances that should prevent these obstacles?

The City’s Codified Ordinances require trees within public right-of-ways to be maintained so that clearance above sidewalks is at least six feet. It is the responsibility of all property owners or occupants to trim or remove plantings within and adjacent to the curb lawn area of the public way abutting their properties.

The next time your walk is blocked, we can help. Report these issues to the Building and Zoning Division by emailing [email protected] or calling (513) 867-5321.

Are you planning to tackle some “honey do” projects soon? It is always

a good idea to check with the City first to find out whether or not a building permit is required before you get started.

Even if you are hiring a contractor to do the project, it’s a good idea to make sure they have secured any necessary permits. A few examples of projects that require permits are: decks, pools, roofs, sheds, fences, HVAC replacement, and electrical work.

When in doubt, contact the Building Division by email at [email protected] or by phone at (513) 867-5318. Contrary to the popular quote, when it comes to building permits, it is always better to ask for permission rather than forgiveness.

Rape Aggression Class

The Fairfield Police Department in conjunction with the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office is offering RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) classes to the women in

our communities interested in learning about personal safety. The classes are designed to develop and enhance the options of self-defense so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is being attacked.

Classes are offered as either 9 hours or 12 hours. The 12 hour class contains dynamic simulation allowing the student to put the techniques they have learned into practice against an aggressor. The classes are FREE to all women 16 years of age or older who wish to participate.

If you are interested in taking a basic personal defense class, please contact Officer Doug Day by phone at 896-8268 or by email at [email protected]. Drinking Water Quality Report Available

In June, the Water Division published the City’s 2016 Water Quality Report, also known as the Consumer Confidence Report. The report is

available online at www.fairfield-city.org/water/2016CCRReport.pdf.

All utility customers received information about the report and how to access it on their recent water bills. Hard copies of the report are also available at the City Building, at the Water Treatment Plant, or by calling 858-7775.

The report contains important information about the source and quality of Fairfield’s water. Fairfield is required to test its water regularly to ensure its safety.

In 2016, Fairfield’s drinking water met all federal and state standards as established by the U.S. and Ohio Environmental Protection Agencies. At no time did testing find contaminants exceeding acceptable ranges.
