Export boom in climate protection: Bavarian environmental products are in demand like never before. According to recent figures published by the Bavarian State Office of Statistics and Data Processing, Bavarian com-panies have generated a total turnover of € 16.1 billion in this sector. This corresponds to an increase of approximately 134 % on the previous year in this important future market. Innovations from Bavaria are in particular

demand abroad: turnover generated by international companies was at € 9.6 billion. Climate protection products and services are most sought after, especially building and associated services, but also mechanical engineering products such as components for combined heat and power plants, photovoltaic applications and wind turbines.

Excursiopedia is an online portal for travellers offering its users information in seven languages, including Chinese which was added at the end of May. As a ’global one-stop shop’, the Bavarian start-up with Russian roots brokers more than 5,000 day trips and tours in 110 countries. The company is based in Munich and has a service centre in Passau. We talked to Yulian Patzelt, one of the four founders.

WHAT‘S THE POINT OF BOOkINg A CITY TOUR BEFORE YOU ACTUAllY gET THERE?by making a reservation in advance, we can gua-rantee that our customers will get the best offers which are often sold out already once they try to book them on the spot. Excursiopedia also helps customers make decisions more easily and find special offers that they probably would not have

come across, had they waited until they got there – we inspire people to experience more, both on trips and at home. in addition, user beha-viour has fundamentally changed over the last few years. our target audience loves to browse the in-ternet conveniently from home on mobile devices like the iPad, they want to discover new activities that way and like booking these ‘from the couch’.

WHICH OFFER WOUlD YOU RECOMMEND TO TOURISTS IN BAvARIA?bavaria has a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered. Popular examples include the 5-lake tour or a helicopter flight over the Alps. Another beautiful destination is the salt mine in berchtes-gaden. those attracted to the bavarian capital can get acquainted with munich and its beer culture on a bicycle tour as well as from a classic sightseeing bus trip. Equally popular and very relaxing is the ro-mantic horse carriage tour through munich. those who are after a more culinary experience, can book a cooking course via Excursiopedia as well.

HOW DID THE BAvARIAN-RUSSIAN CO-OPERA-TION COME ABOUT?our cEo, Kirill sermyagin, has lived in munich –our metropolis with a heart – for 3 years. As luck

would have it, we got to know each other during a beer garden visit here at the chinese tower. Kirill had the idea to launch Excursiopedia.com and so, together with two top it engineers from moscow, we founded big world GmbH and the online plat-form Excursiopedia.com.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE BAvARIA?the slogan ‘laptop and lederhosen’ perfectly captures the link between traditional values and modern trends. we found bavaria to be the ideal location for our company, as both of our business fields, i. e. tourism and the internet, are based on the merged characteristics of tradition and modern developments. our two bavarian locations are thus ideally suited. on the one hand they provide well trained, international talents from various dis-ciplines, and on the other they offer experienced tourism professionals. the international charac-ter and multilingual skills of our staff, at both our locations in the border city of Passau and in the cosmopolitan city of munich, play a decisive role for our global ambitions.

This summer, the whole of Europe will once again be infected with football fever. In Poland and the Ukraine, the continent’s best football teams will compete for the title of European Champion – some of the stadiums might seemingly provide a home atmosphere for the german team: after all, many of them were built by Bavarian companies.

As the whole world knows, when it comes to football technique, the Free State has much to offer. Germany’s head coach has nominated no less than eight FC Bayern players for the national team – among them world class footballers such as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Müller and Philipp Lahm. What many people do not know is that due to its technical expertise, Bavaria is also in high demand for football technology in connection with major sports events. All four stadiums being used for the tournament in Poland were built by Bava-rian companies and engineers – all of them state-of-the-art football arenas, which have to meet the highest standards.

Alpine Bau Deutschland AG, based in the Upper Bavarian town of Eching, and its partners built and modernised three stadiums: the PGE Arena Gdańsk, the National Stadium, Warsaw and the City Stadium in Poznań.

With 44,000 seats, the PGE Arena Gdańsk is among the country’s largest sports venues. “With this stadium, we have once again proven our expertise in inter-

national sports facilities construction“, comments Karsten Hell, Chairman of Alpine Bau Deutschland AG. “The PGE Arena Gdańsk is a new landmark for the city of Gdańsk“. The company duly received the “Building Of The Year 2010 Award” for sports facilities in Poland.

Max Bögl Bauservice GmbH and Co. KG demonstrated their construction competence with the fourth tournament stadium in Wrocław. The traditional Bavarian company was called in to help once it had become clear that the original contractor was unable to meet the building deadline. The arena had to be completed in just 14 months. “That was definitely quite a challenge for our engineers and partners“, remembers Josef Kotzbauer of Bögl. “However, we were literally able to build on the experience gained on the Cologne and Frankfurt stadiums for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The roof structure of the Allianz Arena in Munich was also implemented by our people. Sports faci-lities are our speciality.“

Founded in 1929 by Max von Bögl, the company based in the Upper Palatinate town of Neumarkt can look back on a history of over 80 years. According to its public accounts, it is the largest privately held German building contractor with an annual turnover of € 1.6 billion and over 6,000 employees. Bögl specialises in pre-fabricated concrete elements for stadium construction, such as grand-stands, stairs and support structures. “You have to combine the individual parts with the highest degree of accuracy – then it is a bit like putting together a LEGO building“, comments Kotzbauer.

It wasn‘t just Alpine and Bögl who had their concrete mixers on overtime du-ring the preparations for Euro 2012. Hightex, a systems engineering specialist from Bernau, near Lake Chiemsee, was also able to utilise its special skills. Their engineers successfully planned, manufactured and installed the roof membrane for the new National Stadium in Warsaw and the Olympic Sta-dium in Kiev.

Since the tournament final will take place at the Olympic Stadium it is to be hoped that the German team will be there and that not only the FC Bayern players will make the most of their ‘home advantage’.

EVEN THE GEAR IS FROm BAVARIA

it is not just the stadiums, many players will also be kitted out with bavarian gear: adidas and Puma are the main suppliers to many national sports teams. Germany, France, spain and Greece use adidas, while italy, Poland and the czech republic are equipped by Puma. Even the ball, mario Gomez, Lukas Podolski and their team mates will hopefully score many goals with, was designed in the Free state: the official ball of EUro 2012tm was named ‘tango 12’ and bears the three characteristic adidas stripes.

For decades now, yet another bavarian invention has been responsible for footballers not losing their grip. on 20 november 1952, Adolf Dassler - the founder of adidas - filed a utility model application for a “socket with a continuous thread for the connection of cleats underneath the sole of a sports shoe” with the Patent office in munich; it was the first shoe with screw cleats to be mass produced. wearing those boots, Germany beat Hungary in the 1954 world cup final and created the legend of the ‘miracle of bern’.

OPERA IN THE CASTLE

Bavaria is famous for its medieval castles and its rich operatic tra-dition. For the fourth consecutive year, the lower Bavarian landes-theater brings together both worlds on three open-air stages: the lo-wer Bavarian Castle Festivals 2012 invite spectators to enjoy a trip through the centuries in the impressive historical settings of lands-hut, Passau and Straubing.

A classic piece of italian opera, a drama featuring the legend of King Arthur, an opera Gala dedicated to the brothers strauss – aka the Kings of waltz –, and a rock cover night. Until 8 July, three historic open-air stages, i. e., Landshut’s Prantlgarten, the 800-year-old veste oberhaus in Passau and the reitertreppe at straubing castle, will host these events in the context of the Lower bava-rian castle Festivals.

Love to death, betrayal and intrigue: Puccini’s ‘tosca’ is a highly acclaimed production of the castle Festivals 2012. the opera tells the love story bet-ween the singer tosca and the painter cavaradossi against the background of political upheaval, until passion ends in death.Death is also the main theme of a play which will celebrate its world pre-miere at the festival – ‘King Arthur`s Last battle’. the legendary figure of

many literary works of the European middle Ages looks back on his life during his last battle. A book by George rauch was the basis for the stage play adap-tation. rauch’s work was inspired by thomas malory’s 1485 novel ‘Le morte d‘Arthur’, who brought the Knights of the round table back to life.

Under the motto ‘All waltz’, light music is integrated into the festival as well by way of a strauss Gala entitled ‘Das Lächeln einer sommernacht’. the Lower bavarian Philharmonic orchestra with soprano singer Emily Fultz and tenor Albertus Engelbrecht perform swing classics by Johann strauss and his son of the same name. titles include ‘An der schönen blauen Donau‘, ‘Frühlingsstimmenwalzer‘ and ‘spiel‘ ich die Unschuld vom Lande‘ from the operetta ‘Die Fledermaus‘.
