President’s WelcomeGood evening everyone and welcome to ACAOS’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Following our critically acclaimed production of West Side Story last year, we are delighted to present another musical theatre blockbuster in the form of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s legendary rock opera. This is the first time ACAOS have performed Jesus Christ Superstar and I hope you enjoy our performance tonight. What you are about to witness this evening would not be possible without the input of a large number of people, all of them volunteers, who give up considerable time and effort to manage our Society and stage our productions. I would like to thank my fellow Committee members who despite all having ‘proper day jobs’ still

find the time, commitment and, above all, the passion to oversee our Society in a professional manner. Once again, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to our advertisers, sponsors and patrons for their unflinching support this and every year. And of course to you, our audiences, for your presence here this evening and for your unfailing commitment to the Society. You are the reason we have been able to entertain Airdrie & Coatbridge audiences for over the past 100 years. We are a community club and we always welcome new members to take part in our productions both on and off stage. Over the last 3 years, many new faces have joined the ACAOS ranks and are loving being part of this feel good club. If you are interested in joining ACAOS please contact us for more information. Finally, this show brings to an end my presidential term. It has been a huge honour and extremely rewarding experience to serve an institution which is 105 years old. I am delighted to say that this great club has a very bright future and will remain at the entertainment heart of this community for years to come. I would like to take this opportunity to offer a sincere thank you to everyone who has supported me over the last 3 years; friends, family and not to mention my Vice President, Alan Smith, along with fellow club members. So now, please sit back and be entertained by an extremely talented cast performing our portrayal of ἀe Greatest Story Ever Told...

Honorary President-It is a great honour to promote Anne H. Smith to Honorary President. Anne has been involved in all aspects of this club from performing on stage, serving as President, working on props and most recently, as part of our current fundraising team. Congratulations to Anne!

Life Member - Morag Murray has served the Society for 22 years as Show Secretary, an essential part of the team for each year’s production taking to stage. Latterly she has helped the Society by working ‘front of house’ during Show Week. Congratulations on this wonderful service Morag!

Life Member - Nanette Stewart has been a long serving member of ACAOS for over 40 years. Nanette has played a number of leading lady roles on stage, and latterly has been our concert party coordinator and assistant wardrobe mistress. Thank you Nanette for your dedication to this club - it is greatly appreciated! Congratulations!

Join Our ClubNow it’s your chance to join in the fun. Look at the shows on the opposite page. WOW! Two cracking shows! How can you resist going on stage or helping in other ways with these fabulous shows? As you will notice though, it’s not all hard work. We also have a great social side to the Society, from Golf outings to the rip roaring New Year Ceilidh, and our annual race night is always a winner! These are just some of the social events of our year. Why not be a part of it all . . . .

ObituariesArchibald MoyesIt was with sadness that the Society learned of the death of Archie Moyes in June 2013. Archie joined the Society in 1948 playing minor roles in a number of productions and through his membership met the love of his life, Jean. This romance was such an event in the Society that their engagement was announced on stage after the final performance of “The Maid of the Mountains” in 1956. This was to start a chain of events, and in 1958 Archie left his onstage life to let Jean continue her playing membership following the birth of daughter Gillian. Granddaughter Kirsten is now a fully fledged member appearing in this year’s production. After ceasing as a playing member Archie continued to serve the Society front of house, welcoming the audiences every evening to the Town Hall. He also ran the Bar upstairs for a number of years. His loyalty to the Society lasted most of his life, supporting Jean as she continued with the concert party, until his poor health prevented such active service. His many friends remember him with affection and are saddened by his passing. As members of ACAOS we join in conveying to Jean and her family our sincere sympathy.

Martin Watters On the 9th of September 2013 the lights of Lanarkshire’s amateur theatre dimmed as we said goodbye to one of our best-loved performers. After a period of illness, which had been borne with quiet dignity, determination and of course his trademark grin, our Society learned of the passing of our dear friend Martin. Though it had been some years since he shared the stage with us, Martin, along with his wife Jane, continued to support the club. Over an impressive amateur theatre career, he established himself as a talented and valuable member of many clubs, treading the boards with Riot, St Aiden’s and Bookends theatre companies, to name but a few. Of course his friends in the Society will recall some unforgettable ACAOS performances starting with the voice of the plant, Audrey 2, in Little Shop of Horrors (where his velvety bass tones were used to maximum effect) through to Pawnee Bill in Annie Get Your Gun, with principal roles in Guys and Dolls, Hot Mikado and Between the Sheets along the way. Martin’s contribution to the club also involved a stint on main committee, a role he took on with characteristic coolness after answering the call of a committee that found itself a man down unexpectedly. The Society would like to extend our condolences to Martin’s widow Jane and his children Stephanie and Jake.

Synopsis of Jesus Christ SuperstarWritten and composed by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the last seven days of Jesus Christ’s life. As the show opens, Apostle Judas Iscariot is growing concerned that Jesus’ followers will be perceived as a threat to the occupying Roman Empire. Indeed, priests Caiaphas, Annas and more gather to agree that Jesus and his movement must be crushed. An exalted Jesus arrives in Jerusalem only to find the Temple filled with unsavoury merchants and money lenders. Overrun by a flood of people needing his help, he tells them to heal themselves, and his confidante Mary Magdalene has to calm him down. Judas, fearing the movement is getting out of Jesus’ control, goes to the Romans and tells them Jesus will be in the Garden of Gethsemane the following night. He receives 30 pieces of silver as payment. At the Garden, Judas arrives with Roman soldiers and identifies Jesus by kissing him on the cheek. Jesus is arrested and sent to Caiaphas, then Pontius Pilate, King Herod and finally the people, who condemn him to death on the cross.

Jesus Christ Superstar - A Short HistorySurprisingly when presenting their third show as a concept album in September 1970 Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber hadn’t actually had a stage hit. The album featuring Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan, Murray Head and Yvonne Ellerman went on to become an American Number 1 and in turn was staged in concert form in a number of US Arenas. He finally staged his first stage show in the Mark Hellinger Theater on Broadway on 12 October 1971 and ran for 720 performances supplemented by two successful US tours. The London premier followed at the Palace Theatre in August and ran until 1980 a record at the time.Preceded by the TV talent search “SUPERSTAR” JCS returned to its Arena Show routes with the announcement of a UK national arena tour including the SECC in Glasgow. This production featured Tim Minchin as Judas, Spice Girl Mel C as Mary and Radio 1’s Chris Moyles as Herod. Jesus would be played by Superstar winner Ben Foster. The tour was a huge success and has gone on to tour Australia.

Steven Struthers – JesusSteven is delighted to be back with ACAOS this year where he has met up with some old friends as well as new ones, and is proud to be one of the ‘Airdrie gang’. Steven has previously played lead roles for ACAOS as Seymour in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and Nankee Poo in ‘The Hot Mikado’. He has enjoyed performing from a very early age and has always loved Jesus Christ Superstar. Steven is overjoyed to be playing this iconic role that he has admired for so long. He hopes you all enjoy the show and he will see you at the bar... if he gets down from the cross in time... hoping that hasn’t ruined the ending for you!

Kris Morrison – Judas Kris has a BA in Musical Theatre. He has been with ACAOS now for 5 years and has played various roles with the Society including Billy Crocker in ‘Anything Goes’, Willard in ‘Footloose’ and Action in last year’s production of ‘West Side Story’. Kris is delighted to be back with ACAOS again this year in his most challenging role yet as Judas. He would like to thank the cast and production team of JCS for making it a wonderful experience and he hopes his performance leaves the audience with... ‘Heaven on their Minds’. Kris also knows he uses terrible puns!

Laura Shepherd – MaryLaura joined ACAOS in 2013 for ‘Come Fly With Me - New Heights’ after hearing great things about the Society. She has been singing with local drama groups since she was 7 years old, including the Scottish Theatre Camp, Music School (STMS), Apollo Players, Coatbridge based choir (Sound Sensational) and is currently lead vocals with top Scottish wedding band Madison. Laura has also represented Scotland as a finalist in the Musical Singing section of Festival4Stars in 2011. She is over the moon to be taking part in this show, and says to be given the part of Mary has been a dream come true. Laura wants to thank her family and friends for showing her so much love and support, and in particular Chris, her partner, for his patience and help in preparing her for the show.

Smith and Joan Hamilton provided a new cafe service for us all, whilst we were rehearsing. Known as “The Tea Team” this became a welcome source of income. Obviously a big thank you to everyone for using the cafe and contributing financially, but a huge thanks to these three ladies for organising and donating stock and serving us week after week.

Joint winners of the Award this year are Alan Smith and Christine Nelson. Alan and Christine championed the Society’s new online ticket sales system for West Side Story. By moving to this new IT System, it has made the ticket selling process easier for the Society and generated new online sales.

A huge well done to both teams, Congratulations!

Over half a century ago people said

that our new chocolate

biscuit was unbeatable

so we haven’t changed

them. The nineteen fifties saw the introduction of lots of very interesting ideas. One of them was the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer. With food rationing only recently ended this big biscuit was especially welcome with its layers of wafer and caramel and the generous milk chocolate coating. It quickly became and remains a favourite here and all over the world. Today it’s exactly the same and just as popular because the only thing different is the dark chocolate alternative.

In the Spotlight At 17 Samantha Ferguson is one of our younger club members. She has a strong historic family connection to ACAOS going back quite a few decades. Her dad, Drew, and grandfather Tom served for many years as members of the hard working Ferguson Brothers Stage Crew. Gran, Moira Smellie was the vivacious leading lady in many a show as was her very talented great- grandmother Moira Dobbie. But it doesn’t end there, her great-great grandfather was Jim Ferguson Senior, one of the Society’s early Stage Crew Managers.

Samantha is currently in her 6th year at Airdrie Academy and is studying for her Highers but she took time out to be in our spotlight. HowdidyoufirstbecomeinvolvedinACAOS?Like most people my first experience was as a member of the audience. When I was a wee girl my dad, a member of the stage crew, brought me and my sister to see the show. We would sit in the balcony watching enthralled as gran performed. That was me hooked.

WhatwasyourfirstshowwithACAOSandhaveyoubeeninanyshowsatschool? In 2009 I helped backstage during ‘Anything Goes,’ the club’s Centenary show. My first show on stage was last year in ‘West Side Story’ which was just fabulous. In Primary School I was in ‘We Will Rock You’ and I sang in the Academy choir at their carol services.Gran now lives in Cyprus and last year I spent the summer there. I got a job working in a Japanese restaurant dressed as a Geisha handing out leaflets.

Whatshowwouldyouliketoperformin?42nd Street. I love all the dancing in it and learning to tap dance would be great fun and a challenge.

Do you have any ambition to follow gran and great- gran and be the leading lady in ashow?Yes I would love to, but right now I just want to continue in all the shows to come.

ApartfromAmateurDramaticshelpingyouunwindfromyourstudiesatschool, doyouhavetimeforanyotherinterests?I teach musical theatre at the Pamela Logan School of Dance. This is for children aged 3 to 14.

Anyembarrassingorfunnymomentsonstage?Oh yes! The lights came up at the start of a scene and there I was alone and centre stage! Unfortunately I was part of the stage crew. I felt like a rabbit in the headlights.

Whatareyourambitionsforthefuture?I want to go to university and be a primary school teacher and of course still be involved in ACAOS. I have just received the terrific news that I have got a place at Motherwell College to study this year for an NC in Early Education and Childcare. Then I’ll start the HNC course and from there hopefully I’ll go straight to university.

WhatdoyoumostenjoyaboutbeingamemberofACAOS?I’ve made lots of new friends, and the run up to show week is hard work and great fun.

The Society would like to wish Samantha well in all her future endeavours and hope she has a long and happy association with the club and keep up the family traditions.

NationalOperaticandDramaticAssociation(NODA)David Black, NODA District 5 Representative, (centre back in photograph), was delighted to congratu-late the ACAOS members who received their NODA AWARDS for many years on stage and/or for assisting in productions in many other ways..

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) was founded in 1899 and has a member-ship of 2500 amateur theatre groups and over 2000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls. NODA is divided into eleven regions, each headed by a regional councillor who sits on the national council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of regional representatives. These 190 volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre groups themselves.

NODA aims: • To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector• To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the

highest standards of best practice and performance• To provide leadership and advice to enable amateur

theatre to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century

Membership of NODA provides theatre groups with a wide range of benefits including access to NODA’s advice service at national and regional level, as well as representation to government, access to funding agencies, direct access to rights holders and the media, and access to conferences, workshops and seminars to help share information on best practice. NODA also holds an annual residential Summer School (with bursaries available) offering training from professional tutors in a wide range of both performance and technical courses. A similar residential youth academy has also been introduced to provide training for those under 18. NODA also publishes regular regional magazines as well as its quarterly national magazine, Theatre Business, designed to help those running theatre groups, and holds annual national and regional Programme and Poster competitions, to encourage the highest standards in design.
