Manor Park, Kings Bromley - Car Park 18 WS15 4ED(water manager - N. Kuhn) Car Park 19 DE13 7HZ

HANSONS POLICY - NO WADING OVER THE RIVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

This is a large gravel pit consisting of two connected pools.:The 1st Pool - Nursing Home Pool, is down Manor Rd (Royal Oak). Car park shared with the Bowling Club, so we can only use it from 1st Sept to 31st March. When closed, park on the verge carefully! This pool is deep! Up to 30’ in places though mostly 20’ to 25’. Don’t worry it’s full of fish, mostly Skimmers, Roach, Hybrids and Perch with bigger Bream and Pike to 20lbs+. Also holds a few Carp, Tench and Eels. The opposite bank to the car park is shallower and if you turn right over stile from the car park and go over the ‘hump’ it is also shallower (13’)!

The 2nd Pool - Yacht Club Pool, sign posted off the A513 Rugeley Rd. Go through the gate (key req.), the car park is 200m on right (Park in car park only!). This pool holds the same species as the Nursing Home Pool, though is a lot shallower. The bay to left of the car park is still 20’ deep as is the river mouth. To the right of the car park the pool is approx 12’ deep all over. The boundary is the river mouth and at the end of the gravel bank. Non fishable waters are shown on the map below as XXXX. A small number of rods are reserved for Hanson Sports Club, Cannock Police, and Sailing Club members.

We have aquired the fishing rights for ‘Saddlesall’ - the large gravel pit through the gap (cutting). Access is from the lay-by on the A515 north of Kings Bromley. Go across the bridge over the first arm of the River Trent; turn left and follow the river upstream (do not take short cut across the field). The fishing on the river is leased to BURSLEM A/C. There is no specific parking (we are looking for some).

FISHING ON SADDLESALL IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE OTHER TWO LAKES.

BEWARE POWER CABLES CROSS THESE POOLS!JUNIOR MEMBERS MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULTPLEASE LEAVE NO LITTER AND STRICTLY NO FIRES

Relations with the Boat Club

Both the boat club and BMAA committees are working hard to ensure good relations between the two clubs. The boat club is aware of the problems which can occur and is pressing it’s members to be aware of our problems. BMAA members have been accidentally locked in by Sailing Club members. By agreement the Sailing Club will now use our lock. If the gate is locked when you arrive/leave then make sure you lock it after you. Sometimes the Sailing Club will need to leave the gate open. If this happens then a sign will be visible on the gate. We will all be using the same key.

For example:-BY AGREEMENT WITH BMAA

PLEASE LEAVE THE GATE OPENMANOR PARK SAILING CLUB

We list below for your information the problems that the Boat club have. Please understand that at times they have legal and insurance requirements for the speedboat to dash about, not to mention the rescue of people in the water.

The boat club have 3 safety boats which are required for emergencies. They also have to be regularly tested by the club and also inspected/tested e.g. by their insurers. In addition some training sessions are also required. The boat club will make every effort to keep the wash to a minimum. We will also be provided with a list of their open days, training days and race days. If you experience problems other than on those days and believe them to be through “joy-riding”, let the secretary or a bailiff know ASAP.

The other main problem area is in the gap leading to SADDLESHALL. The gap is being dredged to 15 feet but is narrow for sailing boats to get through, especially when they have to tack etc. it is shallow opposite where we fish. In addition not all are expert sailors!! With the problems getting through the gap, they cannot always spot where an angler has a pole/rod/floats etc.

We have agreed that anglers fishing in or near the gap (cutting) should remove their tackle from the water when any boat is going through. Boats have priority over anglers here.

We will be providing the Boat Club with a list of our match dates.

Members are advised to take special care with the placement of baits near to buoys when boats are on the water. Not every buoy will always be used, as the race courses are dictated by wind direction on the day in question.

A notice board will be erected in the car park. Boat club open dates will be displayed on the board. Also see Waters Booked list.

BMAA own the fishing rights on both banks of approx 9 miles of Prime River fishing. Depths vary from fast shallow rapids to sedate deep pools. This varied water holds Barbel, Chub, Bream, Roach, Dace, Carp, Perch, Pike, Grayling and Trout. The quality of the Barbel, Chub, Grayling and Trout are legendary. The key to a good day Dove fishing is location. You have to be in the right place at the right time. Still, sometimes just being ‘on the Dove’ is enough! Members may fly fish the river Dove ALL YEAR ROUND. Below, there is a map and guide to car parks, access and the fishing.

Tutbury Mill - (1 on map) Park in Council car park off the roundabout at the bottom of the bike pass. Walk away from car park/road, past Cricket ground, over stile. Walk straight on across Castle Field for weir (800m) start of BMAA water, or turn right after stile and walk 100m to river. The Weir holds Barbel, Chub, Dace and Trout. The Steady/Deep middle of this section holds 10lb+ Barbel, and a few big Carp. Pump House, Castle Hotel - (CH on map) Park on road opposite the Castle Hotel. The river is 150m across the field.. On this bank, BMAA water starts one field above the road bridge. The opposite bank is shared with Gypsum AC (150m above bridge and down stream of the bridge until the fleam joins the river). Pegs around the bridge are popular for all species and with coloured water Roach can be caught. Down stream is the pump house section that is mostly specimen Barbel, Chub, Pike, and the odd Carp and Bream.Marston Lane, Nestles - No official parkingThis section is known as the ‘Willows’. This section holds Carp, Barbel, Bream and Chub. This is a very popular stretch and relatively easy to fish on all methods.Marston Lane, Under Pass - (2 on map) 400m past Church there is a track across the field on the left, this leads to the car park. 300m down stream are the ‘Bottom Willows’ which hold large numbers of Chub & BarbelMarston Bridge/Old Dove - (3 on map) Park next to the bridge or use our car park through the gate (Key required). This is a popular section for all species with good fly fishing. Down river is the Weir and also further down approx 500m is an old railway bridge known as the ‘Pillars’, these are well known hot spots for Pike, Barbel and ChubHorseshoe Meadow, Rolleston - Walk down the track to the 2nd gate. Walk straight ahead for the fleam then follow the fleam to the river. Winter floods provide good fleam fishing for big Roach and Dace. Shallows below the fleam hold Grayling and Trout. RIVER DOVE AND RIVER TRENT (Hargate Meadow) Car Parks - 1 SK 214 294, 2 SK 223 295, 3 SK 235 288, 4 SK 274 280, 5 SK 268 270, 6 SK 280 265, CH SK 215 296, BSL SK 262 285, FPL SK 263 283, 22 SK 270 265(water managers - R. Sutton, J. Harvey)

The Horseshoe is very good for Barbel, Pike and Chub. The shallows below the Horseshoe hold Dace, Grayling, Trout and Chub.

We are hoping to improve this water, see newsletter. PLEASE LEAVE NO LITTER AND STRICTLY NO FIRES

Fishpond Lane, Eggington, Podmores - (FPL on map) Park on bend each side of the track near the Duck Street sign. Show care and consideration not to damage the grass verges. Walk down the track over 3 streams (Hilton Brook fishing as per map) and through a gate. Turn right and follow a hedge on the right for 300m, over flood bank to the river (Beware of Cables!) The river here is 3m (9ft) deep and in the wood further down it is 4m (12ft) deep. This section holds good Bream to 5lb+, big Roach, Chub and Barbel. Down river is Stretton Weir which is good for all species. Below the weir (Straight on at Gate) is a good Barbel and Chub section with the odd Bream and Big Pike.Podmore Pools are in the middle of this section (just above Weir). Full of lilies and reeds with a good head of Tench. Due to silt the pools are very shallow but also contain Pike, Bream, Roach and Perch.Horseshoe Meadow, North bank, Blacksmiths Lane, Eggington - (BSL on map). Continue past FPL for 150m, turn left into Blacksmiths Lane, go further 200m then turn left into track (BEWARE RUTTED) Limited to 6 cars. DO NOT BLOCK ACCESS.Parking is just before gates (park on verge). On foot go straight ahead down the bridlepath, over bridge (Hilton Brook) then turn left to river 300m. Fishing as car park 4.Monks Bridge - (5 on map). From southbound, come off A38 just before river. Use key for gate and park each side of the bridge. Fishing above Monks ‘willows’ very good for Chub and Barbel. Below Monks is good for all species. Under aqueduct is good for big Chub.Ratcliffs and the Fleam - (22 on map). Follow Millstream Lane to railway bridge and drive under bridge (Beware deep water at times). Just through bridge go through gate (key req.). The car park is at end of track. For river (Railway Bridge) walk over footbridge then bear right - walk straight across field for 200m. The river here holds good Chub, Barbel and Bream. The shallows above Bridge hold Dace and Grayling. The lower River can be found past the Pool by following the Fleam. The Fleam mouth is good for Pike and Perch and below this is good for all species. Walking straight across from the Fleam mouth puts you on the wall; a good bend/bay here holds all species. 300m further is the boundary.Ratcliffes, north bank - On the South bound A38, ½ mile before the River Dove, turn left over Canal Bridge. Drive down lane, over a railway bridge past the entrance to CEMEX and then 300m past the Bridge the road has a sharp left bend (there is a gate which has our lock on and is sometimes locked. Park on verge without blocking the road. Walk right through the gate and the river is 250m away. You should be on bend below the Fleam. Fishing is as above. Hargate Meadow, River Trent - (6 on map). Continue to end of road as above and park just through the gate. River is 200m across the field. Upper boundary joins the River Dove and the Lower boundary is a brook 250m below the Pipe Bridge. A very good section holding big Chub and Barbel plus Roach, Carp, Bream, Dace, Perch and Pike. A very good early season water for a mixed bag. The Bream can show anywhere even in fast water. (see also the next page for parking )Members can take their cars along the banks of the R Trent PROVIDED THATa. There is no mowing grass AND b. The land is not too wet. Under these circumstances then use the temporary enclosure provided. This is situated on the higher ground at the end of the track. It is marked Car Park 6 on the map. This water is now shared with Cemex A/C

Old Dove: Marston - Car Park 3 [SK 235 288](water manager - R. Sutton)The Old Dove (3 on Dove map) as its name suggests is an old section of the river that has been cut off. It has a gravel bottom, is quite shallow (4’), very clear and as a result is full of weed and lilies. Add to this the large size of the fish and you have a tough nut to crack! Some days the fish will ignore everything you offer and others they just give themselves up. The best times are early morning and late evening. The Old Dove holds good Roach, Rudd, Perch, Bream, and Carp. It is well known for its Tench and Pike. From the car park to the end of the trees this section was dredged and then pegged. It has a few deeper holes and these pegs can produce the bigger Roach and Pike. From the trees up to the bend it is very shallow but holds some Tench and Carp in the summer. The bend itself is a good area due to its extra depth and cover; this is the start of our ‘own’ water. The trees (both banks) have just a few pegs but hold both Tench and Bream. Further along is the open water and cow drink, the fishing here is good for all species, especially around the brook end. This was also the last section to be dredged so is deeper than the other sections. This water is a SSSI.

River Trent - Walton on Trent and Catton(water manager - R. Smith) The Walton stretch is approx ½ mile south of Walton village on Catton Road. The car park entrance gate is on the right (marked private) on the bend at the bottom of Borough Hill. The upper boundary fence is 200m upstream. The lower boundary is the fence next to the road near Walton. The river here holds some very big fish with Carp 15lbs Barbel 8lbs, Chub 5lbs and Bream 5lbs often caught plus the usual Roach, Dace and Perch. Due to the strong flow the fishing can be difficult but those who master it have good bags.Depths vary from fast 2½’ shallows to strong 10’ deep pools providing the opportunity to fish with all methods. As the fish are big here, this section fishes well in both winter and summer conditions. The weed can be a problem in summer causing losses, so use tackle that’s up to the job! NB We only rent the Walton bank.

PLEASE LEAVE NO LITTERSTRICTLY NO FIRES

There is a short gap between the Walton & Catton Stretches. There is no access between the two.

Catton Water Only1) ALWAYS LEAVE OUR LOCK CLOSED (there are two locks).

Fleam, Fleam Pool and access to Lower River Dove Car Park [SK 270 265](water manager - J. Harvey)

Access for both is down Millstream Lane (see Dove map Car Park 22).After prolonged rainfall the railway under-pass can flood, so drive through with care. We hold rights from the railway bridge down to the Dove. Holding the same species as the river but of a smaller size the Fleam can provide good general fishing especially when carrying extra water or with a bit of colour (can be better in winter). The better pegs are on the same side as the track / pool making access easy. The pool is just 60m from car park and is a pleasant place to fish with its reed fringed banks. Due to flooding the pool holds Chub and Dace as well as Carp, Bream, Roach, Perch, Tench and has produced Pike for many years.PLEASE LEAVE NO LITTER AND STRICTLY NO FIRES

Cuttle BrookA very popular water holding big Barbel, Chub and Carp plus all the usual species. From Swarkestone Bridge (A514) 300m past Garage turn right into track (sign-posted). Follow the track for 1mile to river, Car park 8B. Park near footbridge (never block track) fishing here is good for Barbel, Chub, Roach and Bream. The pegs above bridge are very good! Car park 8C is a further ¼ mile down the track in the Woods. The pegs along the roadside can all produce good catches of Chub and Roach. Barbel can show anywhere! The pegs in the wood are a lot deeper and hold Big Perch, Chub and Carp, Below the Woods the river returns to fast shallow runs (Barbel & Chub). The old weir is good for Barbel, Chub, Perch and Pike. The Pegs downstream are good for all species. A pedestrian access is located down Woodshop Lane which is between the bridge and The Crewe & Harpur Pub. Park in the lane (please do not block / annoy locals) and go down gravel path between house and bungalow (30m From main road). Why should you join the Angling Trust?

Why should you join AT? This is a question I am regularly asked and usually two points are raised: “I pay my rod licence to the EA that is enough” and “my club is a member that is enough”. To be honest that is not enough, our rivers and water ways have been degraded over the years to such an extent that by European standards over 50% of them fail for fish populations. The EA is a large organisation of which Fisheries is a small part, getting smaller and overshadowed by the huge spending on Flood Defence work which often is counter to what is good for fish. We paid them £26 million pounds last year from rod licences to “protect & improve fisheries” do you know where this has gone? We don’t! The Angling Trust has now been accepted by the EA as a body to scrutinise this and this is the first time this has been achieved. We will know in future!

But why do we need large numbers of members? Surely Clubs being members is enough? No it is not! Why? The EA is a delivery body of DEFRA which in turn is accountable to politicians at Westminster; the EA does not do policy. Before AT was formed water policy was influenced by other organisations. Politicians work the numbers game – how many people will vote for me? For example the RSPB has 1 million members who vote. We need 1 million anglers to join to have the same power. We have some great Members of Parliament who are anglers but they all say the same thing “to be effective in policy making increase your membership”.

AT is now a professional organisation, not only are we active in Westminster looking after your concerns but as members of the European Anglers Alliance we are keeping an eye on and influencing developments in Europe. The Government announced last week that £92 million pounds would be spent on our rivers and water ways, this would not have happened without AT and our partners WWF. As the editor of the Angling Times said last week “The Angling Trust has today proved beyond doubt that it is the voice to take the sport forward”. SO JOIN TODAY!

Weil’s Disease

Leptospirosis (also known as Weil’s syndrome, canicola fever) is caused by infection with bacteria of the genus Leptospira and affects humans as well as other animals.

Leptospirosis is among the world’s most common diseases transmitted to people from animals. The infection is commonly transmitted to humans by allowing water that has been contaminated by animal urine to come in contact with unhealed breaks in the skin, the eyes, or

with the mucous membranes.

Symptoms can include High temp, head and muscluar aches, Loss of appetite and other flu like symptoms. Genuine Coca Cola is rumoured although not proven to ward off the disease if drank

before and after using the water facitilies.
