BJ&D U3A Newsline | Issue 01.13 December I 1 I Editor: Alan Comerie | email: [email protected] Issue 01.13 | January 2020 Welcome to the January edition of Newsline, In Newsline This Month:- We appeal for volunteers to help on the signing-in desk at the January monthly meeting. Please see page 2 for more information. Also, we have news from 10 of our groups (pages 3-7). “Jiving for Beginners” will have its first meeting on January 2nd and I understand 32 members have signed up for it so far! There are a few places still available for the visit to Nottingham University’s Geospatial Institute at the end of January, details for which are on page 8. Finally, page 10 gives information about the Burton Joyce panto. Note : If you would like to send in an item for inclusion in the next edition of Newsline, it should be e-mailed to [email protected] to arrive no later than 5:00 p.m. Monday 27th January. All items received will be acknowledged by e-mail. - Alan Comerie, Editor Chairman’s Message There are three reasons I have great pleasure in sending this New Year message. First, a big thanks and congratulations to everyone who helped in any way (and there are lots of you) to produce a most enjoyable Christmas Party last month. Once again we thoroughly enjoyed the delightful Burton Joyce Primary School choir with their carols and songs, followed by our very own ukulele group with their oldies songs and their entertaining ad libber, Gren. Elaine (preparing sandwiches at 7am on the morning of the party!) and her team of helpers gave us a delicious afternoon tea: the jelly and fruit was especially popular! David Falkner kept proceedings running and it was so pleasing to hear members say they thought it was the best Christmas Party we have held so far! Thank you again to those who made it a big success. The second reason is to say, with relief and grateful thanks, that Newsline will continue after this month’s edition. Colin Simm, our Website Manager, is generously taking over the role of Editor, so we look forward to its continuing and valued publication. We should not expect Colin to continue in his website manager role, so if anyone would like to know what it entails (minimal monthly input and guidance if required) please contact Alan Comerie, our Business Secretary, or myself. I appeal to all members to send in a contribution to Newsline, however short, of anything of interest, including photographs, within their membership and groups, or even outside U3A, for us all to read about. Thirdly, as we approach the end of one decade and the start of another, I would like to wish you all a very happy New Year with peace, joyfulness and good health throughout the coming year. - Alwyn Burton Joyce & District U3A Newsline The Ukulele Group at the Xmas meeting. © Christine Smith

Their performance will be a mix of songs, the stories andtales, the images and movies and, of course, fun and audience engagement. The programme for future meetings is as follows:-February 11th - Barbara Meyer - “Big Cats” - This talk will explain not only what is a big cat and outlinewhere these cats live but what problems they are facing in their natural habitat. Art Appreciation GroupDespite the cold, and it was freezing, 18 of the group were completelymind blown by the new exhibition at Patchings which will be openingin April. It’s quite hard to do it justice in writing so I urge you to visit. You will be “met” by local artist, Richard Parkes Bonington, whoappears as a hologram when you use an app on your phone. You thenwend your way along pathways as the paintings are all outside andplaced where they fit best with the natural environment. Along the waythere are 4 hexagonal artists’ studios with a painting by the artistreproduced on 3 glass sides so that the light reflects through. The finalstudio hosts a camera obscura.

Beer and Cider Tasting Group - 19th December 2019Following our usual practice, the group stayed local forthe December tasting trip; partly for convenience but alsoto remind ourselves that we don’t need to go out of BurtonJoyce to find a good selection of drinkable brews. All threeof our village pubs serve at least one or two cask ales anda variety of ciders. There was a good turn-out; more than30 group members joined us at some point during thecourse of the evening. We started at 7:30 in The LordNelson, where we were serenaded by a group of carolsingers, which was nice. At about 9:00 we moved on, toThe Wheatsheaf.

It was in The Wheatsheaf that we ran into a merrycontingent from the BJU3A “Ukes of Hazard” group.Sadly, they had left their instruments at home but theywere having a high old time celebrating a successful gigearlier in the day – you know what musicians are like…

After one or two in The Wheatsheaf we dragged ourselves away from the carousing ukulele wranglers andfinished the evening in the Cross Keys. So ended another successful group session, and may I take thisopportunity to thank all of the group’s members for your contributions throughout this past year of communalactivity and personal development.

Next Year… Our first tasting trip of 2020 will be on January 16th, to The Brickyard on Carlton Hill. It’s justacross the road from the Standhill Road bus stop. Formerly a social club, The Brickyard was renovated byLincoln Green Brewery and re-opened in April 2018. The pub contains a number of items of Hardys & Hansonsmemorabilia complete with a scaled model of the former brewery cleverly built into a table. A snug is locatedat the back of the pub. Real ales and ciders are available. “Craft” beers are also sold. Those who feel inclinedcan also pop into Wetherspoons “Free Man” for a swift one before getting the bus back to Burton Joyce.

If you’d like to join the group, put your name down on the sign-up sheet at the monthly U3A meeting or e-mailme at [email protected]

Luncheon GroupOur December outing followed an established path to the “Thatch” atBottesford, where for the fifth Christmas in succession our leader,Margaret, had reserved tables for us - on Tuesday December 17th. Ahappy and successful end to 2019 lunch trips.

We had almost a complete turnout, enjoying a beautifully preparedmenu, and keeping a tight control on our alcohol intake - at least thedrivers were! The Thatch is a bit off the beaten track for us but, asalways, the extra effort was well rewarded.

Ukulele GroupThe Ukes’ of Hazzard have been very busy with three gigs leading up to Christmas. Starting with theWestwolds Care Centre, Burton Joyce, then the U3A Christmas party and culminating with our annual visit toBramble Court in Gedling. That’s the way we like it. Having a live gig to prepare for is the best way toimprove our performance. We don’t always get it right but I think we are getting better. A big thank you to allour players for their hard work, friendship and fun over the year. New members will be made very welcome. Why not give it a try !- Keith Stafford

University Interest Group - “Payback time”Those of us in Trevor’s University Interest Group have benefited from several fascinating talks over the pastcouple of years but more recently Nottingham Trent have been asking things of us. So it was on the Tuesdayin December (which sadly clashed with the Christmas party) that some of us chose to attend the “Three MinuteThesis” event organised by NTU.

The purpose of this was for PhD students toexplain their thesis, its research premise and themethodology to a lay audience in just 3 minutesusing only one PowerPoint slide. A tall order –and not just for them. Those of us who attendedwere quite worn out after the hour’s intenseconcentration and trying to be fair with thejudging criteria.

As always when one mixes with bright youngthings (and one hopes some of it rubs off likemagic dust) it was so refreshing and stimulatingto hear of the research conducted into diverseareas such as: the links between far rightgroups; the activities of the teenage brain; theeffects of immigration on the well-being of theimmigrant; and, the eventual winner, theattempt to alter attitudes to the ivory trade in Tanzania. Not for us Elaine’s delicious catering. We only got teaand biscuits but were more than rewarded by such a fascinating afternoon.- Judith Wright

University Interest Group will be revisiting the world-renowned Geospatial Instituteat the University of Nottingham on Wednesday 29th January, 10.30 – 12.30.There are just a few places left so if you would like to come please email [email protected]

The talk will be about Satellite Technology and its future. If you have wanted to know how Sat Nav works, how satellites are revolutionizing our world and why they are essential to the banking industry, then this is thebest way to find out! It will include a layman’s guide to what Sat Nav is, what it isn’t (not a spy in the cab),how it works (in principle, simpler than you think!), and what it's used for; and one of these is bankingtransactions, which may surprise you.

You will hear about some of the ground breaking research the Institute does together with an insight into whatthe future holds for satellite technologies including autonomous vehicles and trips to the Moon. There willalso be an update on the UK’s plans to put up a similar constellation of satellites to the European Galileosystem. We will also have a tour of the building, which includes a train track on the roof to help assess theaccuracy of new systems and a test vehicle. Don't pass up on this opportunity to hear about how the day to dayuse of Satellite Technology impacts on all our lives uses and hear from a world leading authority ProfessorTerry Moore, Institute Director on the subject.

In case you are worried this will be an academic lecture, it certainly isn't. It’s all about practical applicationsand what is coming next. For those who attended last time, some of the talk will be similar but it’s over 3 yearsago that we last visited and Terry is going to give an update on what’s happened since then.- Caroline Roberts

Gedling Seniors CouncilThe December meeting of Gedling Seniors Council was a social event attended by representatives of charitableorganisations concerned with the wellbeing of older residents of the borough as well as by civic dignitaries. All were guests of the Seniors Council at a celebratory meal of Syrian dishes cooked in their honour bymembers of the Syrian Society of Nottinghamshire to thank the borough of Gedling for making them and theirfamilies welcome and for helping them to rebuild their lives in a safe environment. The event was a hugesuccess in every way and the members of the Seniors Council plan to reciprocate the kindness of the Syrianfamilies with an outing and a “picnic in the park” in the spring.

Mental Health Crisis Pathway Transformation. Mental Health Sanctuaries - Whatshould they look like in Nottingham & Nottinghamshire?

The NHS Long Term plan has made a commitment to mental health services. The NHS in Nottingham andNottinghamshire believe this gives an opportunity to do things a little bit differently. The long term plan alsostates that there is a clear requirement for the NHS to work with the third sector (charities etc.) and other healthand social care organisations. A small collaborative group has begun meeting to draft up what the term

“mental health sanctuaries” might mean and what people understand about this name for a type of service. It’simportant they talk to as many people as they can at this early stage of planning a new service so that theylisten and understand what communities need.

What is a Mental Health Sanctuary? The NHS in Nottinghamshire is still deciding what it should be, but acrossthe country they are often places people can go and are a calm non-clinical safe space for anyone experiencingan emotional or mental health crisis or are at risk of developing a crisis. Practical and emotional support isgiven in a warm and welcoming environment. Crisis cafés or sanctuaries provide analternative to attending a hospital.
