Joni Lueck has planned the pancake breakfast, while Linda Polley, Murdo Cameron and Frank O’Connell have spread the word via aviation news outlets and direct mailings. Additionally, Polley has gathered donations including $500 from Tim Komberec of Empire Airlines to fund two shuttles for pilots and others who wish to park on Citation (off Atlas) to ride to/from Independence Point festivities on Saturday. Polley also extended our invitation to famous aircraft designer and new-Coeur d’Alene-resident Burt Rutan who will attend with Catbird, his own air mount.

Cameron initially suggested the pancake breakfast/fly-by event to maximize the entertainment possibilities for local and fly-in pilots and friends.

Allen Peterson put together a multimedia show, which was e-mailed to many lists and mailed via CD to a number of regional outlets.

Sailplane pilot and webmaster Rick Eppinger has built a webpage about the event, which can be found at: http://cdaaa.homestead.com

Cameron reports that Southfield Fuel will give a $.15 discount on fuel at its self-serve island to the Cd’AAA pancake breakfast event participants on Aug. 20. This fuel island is on Delta Taxiway midpoint on the airport.

The mandatory fly-by briefing will take place in Mike Gossett’s hanger at 10:30 a.m. sharp. Please have your aircraft ready to start following the briefing. AWOS will suggest the preferred runway and if conditions are stable we will depart and recover aircraft using that same runway. Aircraft that wish to return to another airport are, of course, welcome to disperse after the Parade of Planes in any direction they choose.

Boise airshow performer Greg Poedied unexpectedly from heart attack July 24

By MARY GRADYAVweb Contributing editor

Renowned airshow performer Greg Poe died suddenly on Sunday from an apparent heart attack, his team announced early on Monday. "It was completely out of the blue," spokesman Greg Gibson told AVweb. He said there had been no prior suspicion of health problems for Poe, who was 57, and his death was "very sudden." Poe was not riding motorcycles at the time, Gibson said, contrary to some rumors that have circulated online. He had been riding earlier in the day, but was a passenger in a truck when he died, Gibson said. Poe, of Boise, Idaho, had flown professionally as an airshow pilot for over 20 years, and acquired over 10,000 flight hours in more than 100 types of aircraft in his career.

Poe had flown at EAA AirVenture in the past, but was not scheduled to be here this week. Poe recently told a reporter for the St. Joseph News-Press that he hoped to be

remembered as a pilot, an entertainer, and someone who gives back to the community. "If they remember me as a daredevil, then I've failed," he said. "Because I'm not."Besides his airshow performances, Poe was known for his "Elevate Your Life" youth-outreach program, which he created in 2002 after the drug-related death of his son, Ryan. Greg Poe Airshows issued a statement that it intends to continue operations in both the airshow arena and the Ryan J. Poe Foundation, and will be making

decisions toward achieving that goal in the near future.

Editor’s note: A memorial service — open to the public — for Greg Poe will be held Wednesday, August 17, at 7 p.m. at the Idaho Center in Nampa, ID. A special edition of Greg's Elevate Your Life program is planned. A reception will follow at the Greg Poe Aviation hangar in Caldwell, ID for friends and family.

Elk River has new summertimebreakfast fly-in destination restaurant

By MIKE SATRENIf Curt and Shelley

McLam seem to seek places off the beaten path, Elk River (on State Hwy 8) fits that profile to a T.

Longtime Arctic Cat snowmobilers, the McLams kept returning to rural North Central Idaho where Elk River reigns as an adventure hub.

They also have strong ties to Hayden Edge Performance (Arctic Cat dealership) owners Darrick and Jessica Johnson.

The Coffee Shop is Shelley’s brainchild and when the summer lease became available in 2011 for the old apothecary shop in town, she jumped at the chance.

Good coffee, delicious food and a chance to talk with locals, including 20-year Mayor Jim Martin was instructive and entertaining.Elk River is a look to the Idaho many of us hold dear. It is a holdover from the eke-out-a-living days of yore making peace with the tourism bucks of summertime adventuring.Wintertime is for laying wait until spring and for snowmobiling. In the meantime, fly into Elk River for a great breakfast.Information: Curt and Shelley McLam, 112 Main St.Elk River, Idaho 83827(208) 826-3328, [email protected]
