Carbide Burs And GrindingTools
M.A. Ford manufactures a complete line of
Solid Carbide Burs and Diamond-Pattern
Grinding Tools for a broad range of materi-
ls, applications and finishes.
Grinding Tools are designed for precision
grinding and profiling, especially in hard-
ened steels, up to 65 Rc. Precise toler-
nces on tool diameter, runout and flute
oncentricity, allow machining
olerances within .0002-inches.
Carbide Burs are available in three
different cuts Standard, Fine and Shear
to provide a range of finishes on fer-
ous, non-ferrous and non-metallic mate-
ials. Alternate Diamond Grind Burs arevailable with left-hand flutes added to
help break up chips. These burs are avail-
ble in Standard and Fine Cut versions.

Types Of Cuts andRecommended Applications
Following are general guidelines for
selecting the correct bur based upon
material being machined and finish
desired.
Standard A general-purpose right-hand
flute style is recommended when rapid
stock removal and good workpiece finish
are the parameters.
Recommended Materials
Annealed Steels and Easily Machined
Alloys.
Aluminum, Brass, Bronze, Copper
Carbon, Fiberglass, Hard Rubber,
Masonite, Plastic
Titanium, Hardened steel, Stainless
Steel, Cast iron
Fine A general-purpose right hand flute
style designed for producing higher qual-
ity finishes, when removing less stock with
more operator control.
Recommended Materials
Hardened Steels
Stainless Steels
Th e M. A. Ford produc t fam ily includes
Burs and Grinding Tools that are used in
irtually every manufacturing environment. Like
ll M.A. Ford tools, experienced machinists in
dedicated manufacturing cells make our Burs

Carbide Burs/Grinding ToolsCarbide Burs/Grinding Tools
Carbide burs should typically be
operated between 1,500 and 3,000 SFM
(surface-feet-per-minute). For burs ra
ing in size from 3/16-inch to 3/8-inch
diameter, a 30,000 RPM grinder is reco
mended. A 22,000-RPM grinder will weffectively with burs ranging in size fro
1/4-inch to 1/2-inch in diameter. Solid
carbide burs that are 1/8-inch diamete
less, can typically be run at speeds up
75,000 RPM. However, these are gene
speed recommendations that may nee
to be adjusted. For application quest
call 1-800-553-8024.
Alternate Diamond Grind Left hand fluting 40% of righ
hand fluting. Diamond Grind Left hand fluting 80% of
hand fluting.
Shear A Right-Hand flute style bur isrecommended for rapid stock removal
on softer, non-ferrous and non-metallic
materials.
Recommended Materials
Aluminum, Magnesium and Zinc Alloys.
Plastic Hard Rubber Wood
Alternate Diamond Grind M.A. FordCarbide Burs are available in a Standard
Alternate Diamond and Fine Alternate
Diamond style. An alternate diamond
grind has left hand fluting added to stan-
dard or fine cut fluting. This additional
fluting helps break up chips when workingsteel weldments or other materials that can
produce small or sliver-type chips. A slight
left hand cutting action typically provides
the operator more control of the bur and
grinder.
\
Recommended materials and application
for the Alternate Diamond Grind burs are
as indicated in Bur Application Chart.
Standard and Fine Diamond(optional)
A diamond grind is left hand fluting,
added to standard or fine cut burs. Like
an alternate diamond grind, a diamond
grind will also break up bothersome chips
into an almost granular powder. More
precise deburring is possible because of
a more balanced left and right hand cut-
ting action. The most rapid penetration
achieved with a carbide bur is with a dia-
mond grind. A diamond grind will, how-
ever, reduce tool life. Recommended for
ferrous and stainless steel materials.

Application Data
To prevent overheating and
possible damage to the tool,
the steel shank on a carbide bur
should not be allowed to contact
the workpiece. To minimize wear, the tool should periodically be
dipped in cutting fluid or lubricant,
especially when removing a large
amount of stock material.
