Free parking in the car park behind the George and Dragon Public House, Burpham (can be busy at weekend lunch times). This is a very pleasant circular walk along the banks of the river Arun, through fields that are farmed for the benefit of wildlife, then up to the Downs where there are magnificent views of the Arun Valley and Arundel. Leave the village hall car park and walk towards the George and Dragon then turn left. The road bears left, but continue to go ahead past the No Through Road Sign along the lane, which soon becomes a path. The path divides and there is a way-marker. Take the right fork and follow the path that takes you into a low-lying meadow. On your left there is a raised bank of a redundant loop of the Arun. At the end of this field there is a five bar gate and a track, which you cross, there is also a stile and a three fingerpost. Go left and continue along the riverbank with the river Arun on your left. Sometimes there may be cattle grazing - if this is the case please keep dogs on the lead. The bank leads you to a stile then on to a railway crossing (this is a main line) which you have to cross. Stop, look, listen and be aware of trains. This takes you on to another field; continue on the raised bank of the river Arun. Walk along the bank across a wooden stile. Keep the river Arun on your left. You will see the South Stoke bridge on your left and on the other side of the bank an attractive Sussex tile hung cottage. Do not cross the South Stoke Bridge, but continue along following the yellow way-marker. Go over the stile; across the track and another stile then continue along the river Arun for about 100 yards.
